Scott Gives Himself Do-Over on Jobs Promise

I could argue that I don’t have to create any jobs. I just have to make sure we don’t lose jobs.

Gov. Rick Scott (Fla. – GOP/Tea), explaining why he shouldn’t be held to his campaign promise to create 700,000 new jobs on top of projected growth in Florida. Scott has focused — like most tea party Republicans who campaign on jobs — on issues like drug testing applicants for public assistance, gutting environmental protections, restricting access to voting, and micromanaging public education.

Percentage of jobs killed by government regulations, according to a report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Despite Republican claims that government regulations are the main source of job growth stagnation, according to the report, in 2010 Q4, only 0.25 percent of “layoff events” were the result of regulation. In 2011 Q1, it was 0.4 percent. In 2011 Q2, it was down again to 0.3 percent.

The GOP tea party won control of the House last year by promising independent voters that, if elected, they would focus on “jobs, jobs, jobs.” But upon gaining a majority in the House, the tea party has focused instead on abortion, gay marriage and playing political games designed to obstruct the economic recovery in order to ensure that Mitt Romney, Rick Perry or someone even more incompetent and less qualified is elected president next year.

The latest jobs report out today indicates that employment has stalled, with unemployment stuck at 9.1 percent, proving yet again that the GOP tea party’s obstructionism on the economy is paying off. And since their endgame is to saddle the White House with responsibility for the poor growth their own obstructionism creates, their leader, Speaker John Boehner, was quick to blame the president for the weak numbers.

Steve Benen at Washington Monthly has nailed Speaker Boehner and his tea party bosses for first claiming credit for a good jobs report in the early spring, but now trying to blame the White House for the stalled growth ever since.

Force the Tea Party to Create Jobs, Part 2: Green Light Infrastructure Projects That House GOP Members Have Requested

The tea party had a big success in early August when it fomented a fake debt ceiling crisis and then used that crisis to take the U.S. economy hostage. By threatening to force the United States into default and trigger a worldwide economic depression, they were able to force the president to accept budget that he and everyone else knows will further stall the recovery.

The biggest obstacle against enacting either of these innovative, politically aggressive ideas that they are probably a little too bold and in-your-face for Pres. Obama’s tastes.

There is little doubt now what the extreme right is up to. They want the economy to fail for the sole purpose of weakening the Obama presidency in order to help elect Mitt Romney next year. Then, they seem to be suggesting, Republicans will “fix” the economy presumably by cutting the corporate tax rate to zero and privatizing the federal government. That way they can finish the job Republicans started during the George Bush presidency of turning the United States’ assets and resources over to their masters, corporate oligarch like the Koch brothers et al.

The best way to fix the economy is to create jobs. There are 14 million Americans who are unemployed right now — that we know of. By putting them back to work, consumer spending will rise, demand for new goods and services will increase and the tax coffers will be replenished and we can start to pay down the national debt.

But the tea party and its poodles in the Republican congressional leadership have made it clear they will do everything in their power to stop job creation.

This is a nasty situation, and it has caused a lot of regular Americans to feel hopeless about the government’s ability to kickstart the economy. (And talk about the tail wagging the dog. While the 62 members of the Tea Party caucus represent 14 percent of the House, just 4 percent of Americans say they are active members of the tea party, according a new CBS/New York Times poll.)

However, in just the past few days, two new political solutions for spurring job growth have been proposed by members of the fourth estate. The ideas are similar in that they are both designed to force tea party Republicans to vote against infrascture projects in their own districts. In one case, the idea would be to force tea partyists like Michele Bachmann to vote against public works projects she herself has requested.

  • Sam Stein at Huffington Post, Aug. 10, 2011: “A Freedom of Information Act request filed by The Huffington Post with three separate federal agencies reveals that on at least 16 separate occasions, [Tea Party Caucus Chairwoman Michele] Bachmann petitioned the federal government for direct financial help or aid. A large chunk of those requests were for funds set aside through President Obama’s stimulus program, which Bachmann once labeled “fantasy economics.” Bachmann made two more of those requests to the Environmental Protection Agency, an institution that she has suggested she would eliminate if she were in the White House … Combined with previous revelations that Bachmann personally relied on a federally subsidized home loan while her husband’s business benefited from Medicaid payments, it appears that one of the tea party’s most cherished members has demonstrated that the government does, in fact, play a constructive role — at least in her life and district.

Chris Matthews’ Plan to Force Tea Party Republicans to Create Jobs

Here is a summary of Chris Matthews’ plan:

MATTHEWS: If some member of Congress refused to [approve the construction], put the heat on him or her. Make him or her defend that dangerous bridge, make them explain why it’s get better to not do job that government is there to do.
  1. Compile a list of all of the thousands of bridges in this country that are below safety code and organize the list by congressional districts.
  2. Publicize those dilapidated bridges and their exact locations in their communities in the congressional districts so that local voters are aware. Let parents, grandparents and concerned citizens see the danger the bridges pose to the next car or school bus that goes over them.
  3. Call on voters to demand that their member of Congress vote to fix the bridge so that it is up to safety code.
  4. Call a vote on the projects, one by one, if necessary, so that voters see where their House member stands.
  5. Each bridge repair project will create hundreds of jobs in the local community, which will spur job growth in related sectors.

While this would apply to every congressional district, it would pose a political problem for the dozens of Republicans in the House who are determined to sabotage the economy — the ones who are standing in the way of job creation — particularly Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota and members of the tea party caucus she chairs.
