Florida Wants to Know: Is Our Lt. Gov. Gay?

Carroll
Florida Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll

After a term with Gov. Charlie Crist, you’d think Floridians would be used to rumors of gay goings-on in the governor’s suite. But even normally unflappable Floridians are reeling at the news that Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll (R) might be…How did that one really rude web site put it? Oh yeah, a “carpet muncher.”

Carroll, 52, a former Navy veteran born in Trinidad and married mother of three, including Miami Dolphins player Nolan Carroll, is known as an ultra social conservative, pushing abstinence-only education, among other favorite rightwing initiatives. She’s also had to explain shifting income reporting (her net worth has varied depending on whether she was filling out tax returns or applying for low-income minority business set-asides), how she made speeding tickets in her former legislative district disappear without paying any fines, and how she rented an office whose location would have shown eligibility to bid for additional female-owned business set-asides, except it was already occupied by a private detective.

Report: ‘When she entered the office, she found the Lieutenant Governor and her Travel Aide, Beatriz Ramos, in what can only be described as a compromising position’

Carroll, like her boss, Gov. Rick Scott, also has a reputation for dealing harshly with perceived enemies. Scott, for example, recently tried unsuccessfully to have three judges that he considered liberal prosecuted for improper election filings because they had their paperwork notarized by a state worker, a practice so common no one realized it was verboten.

Carroll took it even further with a former aide, having her arrested for disclosing to the press a conversation recorded in the lieutenant governor’s office. The practice of taping visitors and colleagues was said to be routine under Carroll, but the aide, Carletha Cole, shared the recording with a newspaper. The tape confirmed the chaos and dysfunction alleged in Carroll’s office.

But the arrest and resulting investigation might have consequences Carroll never envisioned, like allegations of an affair with her female travel aide, Beatriz Ramos.

Chris Wallace Eats Mitch McConnell For Lunch – on FOX

Enjoy watching Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky), who already looks like a fish on the pier that someone caught by mistake and didn’t throw back in time, go blank when Chris Wallace (on FOX News!) asks what the Republican alternative is to “Obamacare.”

But keep a couple of points in mind as you view.

Democrats, If You Can’t Beat ‘Em…Run Anyway

Smith
Florida State Sen. Chris Smith

States with Republican super-majorities in your state houses, take note. Florida Democrats have come up with a strategy that might not win their party any seats but will help stop the momentum that Republicans enjoy after they rig districts and gain incumbency.

As strategies go, it’s pretty simple: Run somebody.

As the deadline drew near for candidates to pay money and be listed on the ballot this month, several Republican Senate candidates were within an eyelash of taking office unopposed, without a single vote being cast. You could almost hear the champagne bottles popping.

Every one was sitting on a mountain of campaign cash in hopes of scaring off competition. But one by one, in rapid succession, each drew last-minute Democratic opposition, seemingly from out of nowhere.

By fielding candidates, Smith was able to tie the financial hands of the GOP

The rule is, if a candidate has no competition for a seat by the qualifying deadline, he or she can turn over the money they’ve raised to the state party to help candidates with competitors. This year, that would have meant an extra $2 million for the Republican Party of Florida (RPOF) to spend as it sees fit to trample Democrats across the state.

New Study: Don’t Expect to Run Into Joe Biden at Subway

beemer
Not likely.

Ever since we looked around and noticed that America is pretty much like your Thanksgiving Day table when it comes to discussing politics, researchers have been fascinated with figuring out what makes liberals and conservatives, Democrats and Republicans, tea partiers and occupyers different.

A market research firm filled out the picture a little more this week, publishing a handful of brand preferences linked to relative blueness or redness.

The results, are, in some cases, counter-intuitive. For starters, Jeep was chosen the “most desired car” among Democrats, while BMW was the favorite of Republicans. As a Democrat, I want it noted I would have voted the other way. Twice, if they let me.

As for insurance companies, progressives picked um, Progressive, while conservatives went for Allstate. One can’t help but wonder if the names of these brands had something to do with the choices.

Extreme Times Call for Extremist Brains

art-republican-brainA researcher has discovered a possible cause for the rise of the Tea Party and the Republican Party’s increasing swing toward the far right — they have bad brains. No, really, it’s science.

According to the Telegraph:

So what has this got to do with science? Studies suggest that on average, and even across national boundaries, people who opt for the Left, and people who opt for the Right, tend to be identifiable not only by their stated ideologies but by their personalities and quantifiable psychological traits.

Romney Team Puts Out a Call for Copywriting Help

Copywriter

With Romney himself a walking gaffe, it seems unlikely that doing a better job in print will save the candidate from future embarrassment

Showing the kind of right-on-top-of-it leadership style we expect from someone born in the end zone who thinks himself an MVP, Mitt Romney is finally looking for a better copywriter, according to Buzzfeed’s Andrew Kaczynski.

The candidate suffered through three copy errors in one week, the most famous being the misspelling of the word, “America” in his “With Mitt” app as “Amercia.”

Many Welcome Romney’s Victory as President of Amercia

amerciaStorify is among those chronicling the memes popping up after Mitt Romney’s new iPhone app misspelled the name of the country which Romney wants to run. And while we all wish him well on attaining the presidency of Amercia, we fervently hope he will never be the president of America.

Playing off the Obama campaign, which Romney just keeps doing, his team came up with a new tagline. You know how Obama asks, “Are you in?” Well Romney wants you to say you’re “With Mitt.” That this rhymes so closely with “nitwit” seems to have escaped Romney’s strategists.

You’re supposed to use the app to upload a picture of yourself and, choosing one of 14 pro-Mitt slogans provided, post it on Facebook or Pinterest or someplace else that people you know would enjoy seeing it.

That saying you’re “With Mitt” rhymes so closely with “nitwit” seems to have escaped Romney’s strategists

Romney’s folks are learning what is meant by the loss of control that goes with social media, as people are using the hashtag #Amercia on Twitter to provide such bon mots as:

  • If you’re applying for a job, and you misspell the name of the company you want to work for, you won’t get that job. #Amercia
  • Mitt Romney: wrong for wemon, wrong for minotiries, wrong for #Amercia.
  • Mitt’s gonna be holding an app designer down and cutting his hair today. #amercia
