White Supremacist Incidents on Rise in U.S.

750

New York Times: “Flash displays of hate and white power are happening more frequently in the United States, a trend that experts say is a reaction to changing demographics, political turmoil and social catalysts. More than 750 such incidents have taken place since 2020, according to the Anti-Defamation League, with more than half of them occurring in the last 18 months.”

Missouri Legislative Committee Holds Hearing on Bogus Critical Race Theory Fears – No African-Americans Allowed

Kansas City Star: “A Missouri legislative committee on Monday held a hearing on how educators teach K-12 students about race and racism without hearing from any Black Missourians.

No Black parents, teachers or scholars testified to the Joint Committee on Education during the invite-only hearing on critical race theory. Aside from an official from Missouri’s education department, the only people who testified Monday were critics of critical race theory, which is a way of thinking about America’s history through the lens of racism.”

Critical race theory analyzes ways in which racist laws like segregation rules and voter suppression affect the law, culture and politics even after they have been overturned. It is taught in law schools, never in K-12.

Texas Can’t Let Go of ‘Negro’

Topozone

NPR has dug up a story that contains these elements: ingrained Texas racism, racially pejorative names assigned to geographical features, a weird twist in federal beaurocracy and a clear lack of desire to rectify an ongoing racist practice.

In 1991 when then-Gov. Ann Richards signed a bill authorizing changing the names of 19 sites across Texas that were considered racially insulting to Blacks, everyone thought that was the end of it. They even submitted substitute names that celebrated African Americans who had made significant contributions to the state.

But in the 30 years since, only one of the 19 cliffs, rivers, creeks and valleys with the word “negro” in its name was changed. The other geographical features were not renamed due to local resistance and the limits of federal jurisdiction.

New NRA President Is a Racist

“It is wrong to say like McBath said, that the reason she won was because of her anti-gun stance. That didn’t have anything to do with it — it had to do with being a minority female.”

— National Rifle Association president Carolyn Meadows, telling the Marietta Daily Journal that Rep. Lucy McBath (D-GA) only won her seat in 2018 because she’s black. McBath unseated Rep. Karen Handel (R-GA) on an anti-gun violence platform based on her backstory: Her son was shot and killed in 2012 after a loudness complaint.

Harris Won’t Be ‘Played’ with Racist Rhetoric

“So I was born in Oakland, and raised in the United States except for the years that I was in high school in Montreal, Canada. And look, this is the same thing they did to Barack. This is not new to us and so I think that we know what they are trying to do. … They are trying to do what has been happening over the last two years, which is powerful voices trying to sow hate and division, and so we need to recognize when we’re being played.”

— Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) directly confronting “critics Monday who have questioned her black heritage, her record incarcerating minorities as a prosecutor and her decision to marry a white man,” CNN reports.

More Middle School Bullying Found in Areas that Voted for Trump

18%

A new University of Virginia study found higher rates of bullying and certain types of teasing in areas where voters favored Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election. “Seventh- and eighth-graders in areas that favored President Trump reported bullying rates in spring 2017 that were 18% higher than students living in areas that went for Clinton. They were also 9% more likely to report that kids at their schools were teased because of their race or ethnicity.”
