Santorum: When I Said Obama Believed in a ‘Phony Theology,’ I Was Referring to Climate Change

After disparaging Pres. Obama’s religion in remarks to a tea party crowd in Ohio, GOP frontrunner Rick Santorum went on television yesterday in an attempt to walk back his statement that the president believes in “some phony theology. Not a theology based on the Bible. A different theology.”

Santorum said on the CBS “Face the Nation” program yesterday that he wasn’t questioning Obama’s Christian faith in claiming the president subscribes to a “phony theology,” the phrase he used in a speech to Tea Party activists in Ohio.

“I was talking about the radical environmentalists,” Santorum said. “That’s why I was talking about energy. This idea that man is here to serve the earth, as opposed to husband its resources and being good stewards of the earth, and I think that is a phony ideal.”

Climate science is a theology? Is Rick Santorum really that dumb? Well, yeah. Remember that Santorum was labeled the “Dumbest Member of Congress” when he served in the House in the 1990s — and just last month an aide to Sen. John McCain opined that “For pure, blind stupidity, nobody beats Santorum. In my 20 years in the Senate, I never met a dumber member.”

GOP frontrunner Rick Santorum is on the stump in the Midwest making inflammatory statements that are designed to grab headlines. Yesterday, for example, he asserted that Pres. Obama believes in “some phony theology. Not a theology based on the Bible. A different theology.”

Santorum is engaging in the most outrageous faith-baiting since former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee called Mitt Romney’s Mormon religion a “Satanic cult” during the 2008 presidential campaign.

In reality, the president is a mainstream Protestant, just like every president before him except one, John F. Kennedy, who was a Catholic. Santorum, an ultra-conservative Catholic who is best-known for his anti-gay rhetoric, did not identify the president’s “phony” religion by name, but since he was speaking to a tea party crowd, he was obviously insinuating that the president was not a Christian at all.

Last month, Santorum infamously stood mute at a campaign event when one of his racist supporters described the president as an “avowed Muslim.”

Santorum is engaging in the most outrageous faith-baiting since former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee called Mitt Romney’s Mormon religion a “Satanic cult” during the 2008 presidential campaign.

Over the weekend, Chris Hayes, an editor of the Nation who hosts “Up with Chris Hayes,” a weekend morning political chat show on MSNBC, published the contents of a speech Santorum made at Ave Maria College, a right-wing Catholic school with ties to Domino’s Pizza, in which he excoriated American Protestantism:

In this cycle, the Republican Party’s ever-dwindling tea bagger base demands a candidate for president who is an angry, practiced liar who will go to any rhetorical extreme to smear Pres. Obama.

Rick Santorum is doing his best to prove that he is their guy. Case in point is this episode, played out in the two videos above, from a Santorum campaign stop in Lady Lake, Fla., yesterday.

His performance in these two videos shows, once and for all, that he lacks the intelligence, decorum and stature to be president, and that, were he to become the Republican Party’s nominee, he could never get the votes of moderates and independents that are required to win the presidency.
