Senate Republicans put their paranoia about the United Nations ahead of party loyalty, common sense and, especially, sanity yesterday — and insulted their former leader and their party’s 1996 presidential nominee, disabled World War II veteran Bob Dole to his face — when they voted down a U.N. treaty on disabilities Dole supports while he was on the Senate floor with them yesterday.
Santorum’s Non-Endorsement Endorsement of Romney
Email is insufficient for some things — like breaking up a romance, quitting a job and this:
Rick Santroum sent an email to his supporters on Monday night announcing that he would back Mitt Romeny for the presidency and that everyone needs to support “our nominee” to defeat Barack Obama. In a long explanation, which is also posted on his website, Santorum says that he spoke to Romney last week and received assurances that “family and its foundational role in America’s economic success” are also important to the former governor, too. He also says that he’s “comfortable” with Romney’s foreign policy positions and that he’s convinced Romney will repeal Obamacare if elected, so don’t worry about all that stuff I said about him being a terrible candidate…
It’s slightly telling that Santorum chose to make the endorsement in writing, rather than in person, as most failed politicians do. There may be a time in the not-too-distant future where the two rivals publicly make amends, but doing it in this way allows Santorum to stand behind the party while keeping Romney honest.
Santorum Does Full Etch-a-Sketch on Website, Scrubs Attacks on Romney
The Santorum campaign’s website has been wiped clean of all content directly critical of the now de-facto Republican nominee.
A page that declared Romney to be the “proud defender and author of “Obamneycare” has been replaced by an “Access denied” message. The same is true for a post with a video of Romney declaring that his only connection to the Republican Party was his registration.
Ditto for a page outlining an attack Santorum made against Romney for supporting the Wall Street bailout, another criticizing the former Massachusetts governor for his various flip-flops, yet another attacking Romney for his support of mandates, and a press release that accused Romney of being a Democrat.
Remember that time when Santorum accused Romney of “Taxachusetts economic policies”? The press release marking that moment is gone from the Santorum campaign website.
Santorum Lies about Higher Education – Again
SANTORUM: I was just reading something last night from the state of California. And that the California universities – I think it’s seven or eight of the California system of universities don’t even teach an American history course. It’s not even available to be taught.
Meanwhile in Realityville:
Berkeley, Irvine, Davis, Los Angeles, Merced, Riverside, San Diego, Santa Barbara, and Santa Cruz all offer numerous American history courses. All require students to take U.S. history before they can graduate.
In the past few months Santorum has “called colleges ‘indoctrination mills’ that make students liberal and Godless, and labeled President Obama a ‘snob’ for wanting kids to get educated. ‘Oh, I understand why he wants you to go to college. He wants to remake you in his image,’ Santorum said.”

Let the Santorum Campaign Postmortems Begin
Sam Stein and Jason Cherkis at Huffington Post blame Rick Santorum’s failures in the 2012 Republican primaries on the fact that he learned nothing from the 18-point loss he suffered in his campaign for reelection to the Senate in 2006:
Interviews with more than a dozen former aides, adversaries, and close observers of the ‘06 contest, however, show that important lessons — about the need to stay on message, convey warmth to voters and appear less patronizing — haven’t been learned at all. The senator who stumbled so badly six years ago, many say, is the same candidate now locked in a hotly-contested race for the Republican presidential nomination: pugnacious and unscripted, talented at retail politics, but often his own worst enemy.
But this leaves out the fact that Rick Santorum never had a chance at becoming president because he is a narrow-minded jerk and a bully who is not intellectually or temperamentally suited for high office. It took Pennsylvania voters 12 years — the two terms he served in the Senate — to figure that out. A new Qunnipiac poll out yesterday finds that while Pres. Obama and Mitt Romney are virtually tied in Pennsylvania, 45 to 42 percent, the president beats native son Santorum, 48 to 41 percent.

It is all but a dead cinch now that Mitt Romney will be the Republican nominee for president this year, not because he accrued the delegates he needs — he hasn’t — but because the campaigns of his two closest rivals have imploded.
Newt Gingrich’s sugar daddy Sheldon Adelson, owner of the Venetian and Sands casinos in Las Vegas, recently announced he was pulling the plug on the Gingrich campaign. Gingrich is “at the end of his line,” Adelson said in informal remarks at a Jewish Federation of North America event in one of his casinos.
Rick Santorum inadvertently revealed that he knows his campaign is over — a revelation he has not shared with his donors or supporters — in an interview on Pat Robertson’s televangelical “news” network. Asked if he would be willing to be Romney’s running mate, Santorum said, “Of course. I mean, look. I would do in this race as I always say, this is the most important race in our country’s history. I’m going to do everything I can.”
Wrong answer. The correct answer would have been, “Fortunately, I’ll never have to make that decision, because I am going to be the nominee.” Thanks for playing.
The likelihood Romney would choose Santorum as his running mate is zilch — and not just because Santorum lost his last Senate race in Pennsylvania by double digits or because the Obama campaign would have a field day producing ads showing Romney’s running mate shaking an Etch-a-Sketch, describing Romney as “uniquely disqualified,” a “well-oiled weather vane,” “bland and boring” and a “bully.”
But that’s just one reason the Romney campaign won’t choose Santorum. The other reason is that Rick Santorum is a Catholic.
One-Word Impressions of the GOP Candidates
Remember the old word-association game where I would say a word and you would say the first word that came to mind? Pew Research did much the same thing in a new poll that elicited “quick, off-the-cuff public impressions” of the GOP presidential candidates.
Predictably, they are mostly unflattering:
For Mitt Romney, the overall number of people citing money or wealth has soared since late last year, with mentions of his religion way down. His top five in the new poll are “no,” “rich,” “good,” “Mormon” and “moderate.”
The top five for Rick Santorum: “conservative,” “no,” “good,” “OK,” and “crazy.”
For Newt Gingrich: “old,” “no,” “idiot,” “untrustworthy” and “dislike.”
Santorum Pledges to Ban Porn If Elected Pope, Er, President
The Republican presidential candidate and staunch social conservative wants to ban hard-core pornography. He calls it “toxic to marriages and relationships” in a new statement posted on his official website.
“America is suffering a pandemic of harm from pornography,” the former Pennsylvania senator writes. “It contributes to misogyny and violence against women. It is a contributing factor to prostitution and sex trafficking.”
He demands a crackdown on the distribution of hardcore pornography on the Internet, in addition to material on cable/satellite TV, hotel/motel TV, retail shops and through the mail.
What qualifies as “hardcore” remains unclear.
