The amount by which naturalization applications increased in the 2015 fiscal year over the year before, jumping 14 percent during the six months ending in January, according to federal figures, the New York Times reports. “The pace is picking up by the week, advocates say, and they estimate applications could approach 1 million in 2016, about 200,000 more than the average in recent years.”

Latinos Say Trump is Hurting the Republican Party

Of Latinos “hold negative views of Donald Trump — including 60% who said they have a ‘very negative’ impression of the front-runner in the GOP’s 2016 presidential race. That’s compared to 55% of U.S. residents and just 28% of Republicans who view Trump negatively,” according to a new MSNBC/Telemundo/Marist poll. “Almost two-thirds of Latinos surveyed — 65% — say Trump is hurting the image of the Republican Party, while just 13% say he is helping the party.”

Cruz Not Gaining Traction with Hispanics
Sen. Ted Cruz “finds himself in a strange position as he sees himself eclipsed both by Senator Marco Rubio, also a Cuban-American, and former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, a fluent Spanish-speaker married to a Mexican-American, as early favorites among Hispanic Republicans who could play an increasingly influential role in the nomination process. … To Latinos, Cruz often feels more like an afterthought. And while that’s largely attributed to his hard-right stance on immigration reform, prominent Hispanic conservatives offered insight as to why his problems with Latinos run deeper. Rubio, they said, has embraced his ethnic identity in a way that Cruz, who speaks little Spanish, has not or will not.

Union Plans to Turn Out Latin Vote
Despite being urged not to vote by a group with ties to the Bush White House and financing from GOP and pro-life leaders, Latinos will vote this year. So says Hector Figueroa, an officer with the Service Employees International Union-32BJ (SEIU), who claims most American Latinos are eager to cast their ballots.
Figueroa…says that almost 60 percent of Latino voters now say they are “very enthusiastic” about voting, up from 41 percent on September 6, according to the latest Latino Decisions tracking poll.
“There is a strong sentiment that those behind the Arizona law have been able to place candidates in strategic elections, and their election would be quite detrimental to our community. So in some ways it has galvanized attention. And Latinos want to be there at the polls and be counted.”

And if watching the ad itself doesn’t inspire Latino outrage at those who would cynically keep them out of the democratic process, SEIU volunteers will be working the phones on election day to turn out the Latino vote.
