After Constitutional ‘Lecture,’ Sen. Feinstein Cuts Tea Party Sen. Ted Cruz Down to Size – More of This, Please

After this exchange with California Sen. Dianne Feinstein, chair of the Judiciary Committee, during a hearing on the assault weapons ban, Sen. Ted Cruz — the exhumation of Tailgunner Joe McCarthy — is now a “bloody corpse,” says P.M. Carpenter:

Every so often in politics, but not often enough, a spine-tingling moment of brutal clarity comes along that wipes from dulled memories all the preceding banalities of inauthentic civility and re-renders the profession a stirring and noble one. Today, Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s righteous takedown of that idiot Ted Cruz was one of those moments…

Gun Makers’ NRA Lobby Releases Ad That Puts President’s Daughters in Crosshairs

In what may be the NRA’s most despicable action yet, the gun makers’ lobby has released an ad that focuses on Pres. Obama’s school-age daughters, thus raising the girls’ profile as a target for assassination among right-wing fringe dwellers.

The ad is made all the more atrocious by the fact that it promotes a lie. Here’s the transcript:

“Are the president’s kids more important than yours? Then why is he skeptical about putting armed security in our schools when his kids are protected by armed guards at their school? Mr. Obama demands the wealthy pay their fair share of taxes. But he’s just another elitist hypocrite when it comes to a fair share of security. Protection for their kids. And gun-free zones for ours.”

The president does not oppose improving security in schools. In fact, the proposals he released today for changing gun policies included beefing up school safety.

Gun Nut Who Suggested That America’s Founders Would Have Allowed Slaves to Bear Arms Is a Protege of Dick Morris

Larry Ward, the chairman of Gun Appreciation Day, a crypto-racist rally scheduled to coincide with celebrations next week of Martin Luther King’s birthday as well as the second inauguration of America’s first black president, actually said this on national television on Friday:

LARRY WARD: I think Martin Luther King, Jr. would agree with me if he were alive today that if African Americans had been given the right to keep and bear arms from day one of the country’s founding, perhaps slavery might not have been a chapter in our history.

This is a new classic in right-wing counter-factual history — right up there with Michele Bachmann’s claim during the primaries that “the Founders fought tirelessly to end slavery” or former GOP Senate leader Trent Lott’s assertion on the 100th birthday of South Carolina Sen. Strom Thurmond, who ran for president in 1948 on the neo-Confederate Dixiecrat party ticket, that “…when Strom Thurmond ran for president, we [Mississippians] voted for him. We’re proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn’t have had all these problems over all these years, either.”

Tennessee Suspends Gun Permit of Nut Who Threatened to ‘Start Killing People’

Yeager
It’s reassuring to know that someone in the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security has some sense:

Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security has suspended the handgun carry permit of a local man who threatened to “start killing people” to protect his Second Amendment right.

In a statement released Friday officials said they had suspended the handgun carry permit of James Yeager, CEO of Tactical Response based on “material likelihood of risk of harm to the public.”

On Thursday, a video of Yeager angrily claiming he would “start killing people” if President Barack Obama moved forward with gun control measures began to go viral on the internet.

“The number one priority for our department is to ensure the public’s safety. Mr. Yeager’s comments were irresponsible, dangerous, and deserved our immediate attention. Due to our concern, as well as that of law enforcement, his handgun permit was suspended immediately. We have notified Mr. Yeager about the suspension today via e-mail. He will receive an official notification of his suspension through the mail,” Commissioner Bill Gibbons said.

Godwin’s Law Writ Large: Drudge Headline on Govt Effort to Restrict Mass Killing Guns Makes Predictable Nazi Analogy

According to Wikipedia,”Godwin’s law (also known as Godwin’s Rule of Nazi Analogies or Godwin’s Law of Nazi Analogies) is an argument made by Mike Godwin in 1990 that has become an Internet adage. It states: ‘As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1. In other words, Godwin observed that, given enough time, in any online discussion — regardless of topic or scope – someone inevitably makes a comparison to Hitler or the Nazis.”

After Vice Pres. Joe Biden announced that the White House would be willing to bypass Congress and use executive orders to restrict sales of guns capable of mass killing, right-wing propagandist Matt Drudge skipped all the early stages of discussion referred to by Godwin and went straight to the Nazi analogy in his headline yesterday.

Record Numbers in Florida Locked and Loaded

Welcome to Florida

The news that nearly 800,000 people in Florida requested the background checks needed to purchase a firearm in 2012 gives the rest of the country one more reason to avoid the Sunshine State. If you come, keep in mind that one in every 24 people around you is probably armed.

A bulletproof Hawaiian shirt to go with those black socks and shorts might not be a bad idea.

Gun sales surged after Obama’s re-election, but really took off after the recent shooting with semi-automatic weapons in Newtown, Conn. killed 20 children and six adults (plus the shooter).

In December alone, there were 131,103 background checks requested through the [Florida Department of Law Enforcement] — the highest number the agency has recorded in any single month. That beat the previous record, set only a month earlier, when 84,745 background check requests were submitted in the same month that Obama was re-elected.

It doesn’t hurt that the NRA and Gun Owners of America keep telling people that Obama is going to take their guns and then turn the country into a socialist dictatorship.
