Chuppies Also Crave Aromatherapy Shampoo

A survey of young Chinese consumers – dubbed “Chuppies” – commissioned by shipping giant UPS revealed more interest in American goods than we on this side of the pond imagine. Toiletries and consumer electronics were most desired, while cigarettes and American liquor were least.

American Toiletries: 53 percent of all respondents would like to see a broader selection of U.S. products, such as shampoo, shower gel and dental care products.

American Consumer Electronics: 53 percent of those polled want a broader selection of American electronics. The most likely purchases this year are digital cameras, laptop computers and video/digital recording devices.

Apparel/Fashion Accessories: 52 percent said they want more American fashion, especially athletic shoes, sandals, t-shirts with American logos, sportswear and blue jeans.

American Books, Music and Videos: 50 percent would like to see a broader product selection of American entertainment. This year’s most likely purchases are American videos/DVDs and music compact discs.

Home Appliances: 45 percent would like to see more U.S. durable products including refrigerators, washers/dryers and microwaves.

UPS is big in China, recognizing the vast opportunity for serious bucks there.

“According to the State Department, U.S. exports to China have grown 80 percent since 2001, but this survey shows the Chinese would like even more quality American items,” said Kurt Kuehn, UPS senior vice president, worldwide sales and marketing. “The spending power of this middle class is exploding. Many American companies view China as a threat rather than an opportunity; they run the risk of missing the China potential and being left behind.”

Potential Vaccines Unlikely to Head Off Bird Flu Pandemic

Two stories have emerged on the influenza front, both dealing with potential vaccines — one specific to avian H5N1 flu and the other an all-around flu panacea.

U.S. government scientists say they have successfully tested in people a vaccine that they believe can protect against the strain of avian influenza that is spreading in birds in Asia and Russia. Health officials have been racing to develop a vaccine because they worry that, if the H5N1 strain mutates and combines with a human influenza virus to create a new virus, it could spread rapidly through the world.

Tens of millions of birds have died from infection and culling to prevent spread of the virus. As of Aug. 5 112 people have been infected, and 57 have died from the H5N1 strain of avian influenza. So far, there has been no sustained human-to-human transmission.

Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said that while the vaccine that has undergone preliminary tests could be used on an emergency basis if a
pandemic developed, it would still be several months before that vaccine is tested further and, if licensed, offered to the public. He cautioned: “We don’t have all the vaccine we need to meet the possible demand. The critical issue now is, can we make enough vaccine, given the well-known inability of the vaccine industry to make enough vaccine.”

James ‘I’m a Gay American’ McGreevey Seeks Six-Fig Book Deal

RadarOnline reports that former New Jersey Gov. James McGreevey is negotiating a mid-six-figure book deal with Regan Books for a tell-all of his side of the scandal that drove him from office.

It was August 2004 when McGreevey’s surprising resignation and self-outing made headlines. The married father of two reportedly stepped down as his longtime aide, Golan Cipel, was preparing to mount a sexual harrassment suit against the guv. Rumors also abounded that Cipel had sought $5 million to keep mum about McGreevey’s being gay.

If the deal goes through, McGreevey will be in good authorial company. Regan has published tell-alls by porn star Jenna Jameson, gangster Frank Gotti Agnello and ex-baseball player, inveterate liar and braggart Jose Canseco.

Computer Modeling Suggests Global Bird Flu Pandemic is Stoppable

U.K. and U.S. teams used computer models to work out the possible scenarios that could occur if the H5N1 avian influenza virus mutated and became capable of spreading from human to human. The result could be deaths on the scale of the 1918 Spanish flu epidemic that claimed between 20 million and 40 million lives. However, a combination of surveillance and the targeted use of antiviral drugs could halt it, the teams told the journals “Nature” and “Science.”

The models used by both teams were nased on incidences and controls used in Thailand, one of the countries at highest risk from bird flu. More than 50 people have died from the virus in southeast Asia since the first human cases were reported in 1997.

Currently, the H5N1 avian influenza poses a limited threat to humans because it is difficult to transmit from person to person. But health experts fear the H5N1 virus could acquire this ability, causing an influenza pandemic that could kill as many as 50,000 people in the United Kingdom alone.

Professor Neil Ferguson of Imperial College in London and his colleagues found two specific conditions that would have to be met to limit an outbreak of human-transmissible avian influenza to fewer than 200 cases. First, the virus would have to be identified while confined to about 30 people. Second, antiviral drugs would have to be distributed rapidly to the 20,000 people nearest the infected individuals.

Pensito Review – Covering the Avian Flu Pandemic

Bird flu. Doesn’t sound very threatening, does it? Perhaps you’re more concerned about the possibility of getting West Nile virus or SARS (sudden acute respiratory syndrome). But you should be worried about bird flu, or the H5N1 virus, as it’s known. Very worried.

Avian flu virus has every earmark of becoming a pandemic, or worldwide epidemic. The last pandemic the United States experienced was the influenza epidemic of 1918, which killed 675,000 Americans and several million people worldwide. The H5N1 virus could easily top that, as humans have absolutely no resistance to the virus. It’s too new.

H5N1 only emerged in Asia a couple of years ago. Like swine flu, it is a trans-species virus that mutated and crossed over from birds into humans from close contact. It can be transmitted through feces or sputum, from touching, eating or just being close to infected birds. Not all infected birds show symptoms. It has already crossed over to swine in China — only a short hop from there to people.

At this writing, 54 people have died from bird flu in Asia since December 2003. Millions of domesticated and wild fowl have been killed to stop infection or have died of the infection. Millions more have been vaccinated with a vaccine developed in China that has not been proved effective. Indeed, some health experts think it could spread a vaccine-resistant super-version of the illness.

Where is it? Infections have been detected in Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, China and, most disturbing, eastern Russia, Siberia and Kazakhstan. Human deaths have been confined so far to Vietnam, Indonesia, Hong Kong and China.

H5N1 has been found in flocks of migratory geese, and when those birds migrate, well, they take the virus with them. Hence, the pandemic scenario, with eastern Europe having a high probability of infection in 2005. Health experts also fear that the virus is being spread through illegal meat imports.

What can you do? Nothing. The virus is spreading and will continue to spread, inexorably, across the planet. Take vitamins, exercise and read this News Watch column regularly, as this topic is still under the radar of Western journalists.

We will post the latest information on avian flu here, as it becomes available, from a variety of international new sources.

O.J. Offers to Find Real Leaker

O.J. Simpson has offered his assistance to Pres. Bush in getting to the bottom of the Plame CIA leak investigation. Speaking from a golf course in Florida Tuesday, O.J. vowed to find out who exposed Plame’s identity to reporters after her husband, Joseph Wilson, contradicted Bush’s version of Iraq’s efforts to acquire weapons of mass destruction as the basis for pre-emptive war.

“The real leaker is out there,” O.J. said, “and I won’t rest until we find him and clear the good name of whoever it isn’t.”

Pres. Bush responded warmly to O.J.’s offer.

“I have complete confidence in O.J.’s ability to track down the perpetrators of this dastardly deed,” Bush told reporters. “And if he actually does find the guilty party, I promise to take swift and immediate action, up to and including giving that person a stern talking-to. And I mean that. You can take it to the bank.”

Bush added that finding the leaker has been a difficult and arduous process, one that O.J. will probably be able to extend indefinitely unless he kills someone else and has to go to jail.

“I’ve done everything short of walking across the hall and asking if anyone knows anything,” Bush said. “O.J. has an uncanny ability to look for suspects as far afield as possible, so I know he will be thorough in all the wrong places. Excuse me, I meant right places. Next question.”

Billboard Company Stifles Gay PR Campaign

A billboard company is refusing to run ads they claim do not meet “community standards” in 38 Georgia counties because of their wording. What are these obscene and objectionable words?

They announce that gay people exist.

Savannah Morning News:

James Locke, general manager for Lamar Outdoor Advertising’s operations in South Georgia, said he declined to sell ad space to the Atlanta-based Georgia Equality because of the wording on the signs.

“We just didn’t feel the copy was right for those markets,” Locke told Morris News Service in a telephone interview.

The billboards proposed by Georgia Equality feature images of professionals, such as a male firefighter and a female doctor, and include tag lines that read, “I protect you. And … I am gay. We Are Your Neighbors.”

Another company overlooked the obscenity contained in the ads, and is running the billboards in eight counties comprising metro Atlanta. No reports of offended community members have yet surfaced.

The company’s web site claims it has special expertise at reading area markets. It also says it provides all the choices an advertiser needs.

As long as it isn’t ill-mannered enough to be out of the closet?

Lamar’s business strategy is to be the premier provider of outdoor advertising in each of the markets it serves…We can also help with…software that allows us to analyze the target audience and its demographics…Lamar delivers both the choices and the support that allow advertisers to deliver their messages with maximum impact.

After first claiming the boards were sold, or unavailable, the Lamar guy finally admitted he just isn’t comfortable with the ads.

Locke, the Lamar manager, said he would be open to selling ads to Georgia Equality as long as the wording of the ads was altered.

When asked twice to point out which words in the Georgia Equality billboard were objectionable, Locke would not identify any specific words.

“We’re not turning down business from Georgia Equality, we’re just turning down these actual ads,” he said.

Lamar is a publicly-traded company and sells boards in 40 states and Canada. PR readers know what to do. If you’re in a position to determine your company’s billboard placement, don’t buy from Lamar. Even if you aren’t, email the company’s headquarters with your opinion at tdoran@lamarhq.com.

Wingnut Media Critic Blames Failure of ‘Situation’ on Rachel Maddow’s Short Hair

Wingnuttery: AIM’s Cliff Kincaid blames the failure of Tucker Carlson’s show on the presence of Rachel Maddow, “a lesbian with hair so short that she looks like a man.”

As we suspected, Tucker Carlson’s show on MSNBC, “The Situation,” is just awful. It zips right along, that’s for sure, but it is so obviously an attempt to capture and hold the attention of the ADD generation that somehow the net result is boring.

The audience is staying away in droves, as Mr. Mayer would have put it. “The Situation” ranks near or at the bottom of the MSNBC line-up, and MSNBC is Number Three among the three cable newsers.

The only bright spot on the show is the presence of Rachel Maddow, the resident liberal who conssistently holds her own against the base-pandering Carlson and a revolving cast of winger knuckleheads.

Bill Maher’s ‘I’m Swiss’ on HBO

A Review by PR Contributor VRW

“Bill Maher: I’m Swiss” live on HBO from the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in Portland, Oregon, rocked the packed house of mostly middle-aged, 98 percent white folks, July 30. Maher walked right up to the outrageous edge, kicking clods of muck and mire into the faces of the right, religious, married, parents, obese, beer drinkers, and THE ADMINISTRATION. He blessed only fellow pot smokers, homosexuals, and atheists.

While Bill doesn’t mince words, he avoids scatology. With unerring accuracy he nails his subject on a cross of wit. His funniest bit was his classical interpretation of the lyrics of several rap songs which he translated from bling-bling ebonics into ‘white’ because, he explained, while their kids could get it, the audience would never understand the lyrics as written by the likes of Mr. Snoop-Dog, et al.

Another broad topic was the food Americans eat, which he complains is killing us faster than smoking ever did. He says, ‘we feed cows too sick to stand up to people too fat to walk.’ He also claims he wouldn’t ‘eat a hot dog unless it had a condom on it.’

As for religion, in his opinion, ‘Believing in Jesus is like having an imaginery friend’ and ‘Flying planes into buildings is a faith-based initiative.’ His
conclusion on religion is that it stops people from thinking.

Regarding the President, he said, ‘this guy is so retarded he could be on death row in Texas.’ That was after his big opening on Mr. Bush’s seven minute time-out in that Texas classroom on 9/11. He concluded that any other President would, at least, have gotten up to find out what was going on, having just been told America was under attack. Including even Ronald Reagan and Martin Van Buren.

Maher is a funny man. More than that he is an accomplished, polished satirist who can stand shoulder to shoulder with Mort Sahl and George Carlin. He worked hard Saturday night, and the sweat moons under his arm proved it. Still and yet, Bill Maher is cool.
