Amount the federal government spent on George W. Bush in 2012. That includes almost $400,000 for 8,000 square feet of office space and $85,000 in telephone costs, Politico reports. In total, the government “spent nearly $3.7 million on former presidents last year. That covers a $200,000 pension, compensation and benefits for office staff, and other costs like travel, office space and postage.

Passive-aggressive, much? Having been disinvited from Mitt Romney’s convention in Tampa earlier this year, George W. Bush opted to go to the Cayman Islands — a locale made infamous during the presidential campaign as one of Mitt Romney’s tax havens — to give a speech yesterday.
The fact that Bush chose to go to the Caymans, of all places, five days before his would-be predecessor faces election, is a majorly unreported story, primarily because Bush’s staff imposed a news blackout onto coverage of Bush’s speech:

New Poll Find That Just a Third of Voters View Romney Favorably – Lower by Double Digits Than the Losing Candidates in Recent Election History
George W. Bush ended his term as president in January 2009 with just one signature “accomplishment”: After eight years, he left office as the most unpopular president in the history of presidential polling — his unfavorable ratings were upside down for 39 straight months. When he finally flew back to Texas for good, Bush’s approval was a miserable 34 percent, according to Gallup.
Romney’s favorable rating is down to 30% in swing states in one poll – worse than George Bush’s overall 34% overall favorable rating when he left office.
With numbers like those, Bush could not have been reelected, obviously, were that even legally possible. In fact, no candidate who is viewed so negatively could be elected to any office, especially the presidency. Right?
Which brings us to Mitt Romney, the man who would be Bush’s successor as the next Republican president — the candidate who all but refuses to mention Bush as he campaigns — and the pol whose unfavorables among voters, especially in swing states are as bad, or, in at least one case, worse than Bush’s.

Former Pres. Jimmy Carter, the ex-president Republicans most like to disparage, has an approval rating of 54 percent.

Mitt Romney’s favorable rating, according to the new Wall St. Journal/NBC poll. And there is even worse news for the putative GOP nominee. Among independents, the voters who will likely decide the election in November, Romney’s approval is six points lower — just 22 percent. If something about these disastrously low numbers for a national politician have a ring of familiarity, it may be that they call to mind the approval ratings of George Bush in the final years of his presidency, including his all-time low favorable rating of 25 percent, in 2008, according to Gallup. In fact, George W. Bush was the most unpopular president in the history of presidential polling. Now it’s looking like Mitt Romney could become the most unpopular nominee for the presidency in history.
