Bush Nephew Beats Republican Extremist Drum. What’s He Running For?

The next Bush: George P. and his more famous uncle

Jon told you about the heat his governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, is taking from Republicans in attempts to end the California budget crisis. Schwarzenegger threw his lot in with America’s foremost Democrat, Pres. Barack Obama, in the interest of helping his state, and GOP extremists (yes, that’s pretty much all of them) are imploding.

Your uncle just ran up the biggest deficit in the history of about 20 industrialized nations combined, and you’re claiming the fiscal high ground?

Down here in Florida, Republican Gov. Charlie Crist is in the same hot water. And turning up the flame on the burner of Republican scorn is none other than a Bush. The next generation of sneering, arrogant, law-breaking incompetents is calling out Crist for accepting stimulus funds.

George P. Bush… the son of former Gov. Jeb Bush, grandson of former President George H. Bush and nephew of former President George W. Bush, addressed a national conference of young Republicans and told them there is a rift in the party between fiscal conservatives and what he calls “D light” — Republicans who are trying to appeal to the political middle.

“There’s some in our party that want to assume that government is the answer to all of our problems,” Bush said. “I’m not going to name any names.”

…”You know who I’m talking about,” Bush said, as the crowd attending the Young Republican National Federation murmured and laughed a little tensely. “That’s problematic. We as conservatives have to ultimately balance the federal government’s checkbook.”

“We” frickin’ who, Kemosabee? Your uncle just ran up the biggest deficit in the history of about 20 industrialized nations combined, and you’re claiming the fiscal high ground?

Bush made it clear he respects only the most extreme (dare I say “neoconic”) wing of his party.

“There are numerous actions that I have seen legislatively that do not speak to a strong conservative, it speaks more to a moderate,” Bush said. “That’s fine, but when you run as a conservative and then you lead as a moderate, that’s one thing that any leader would have to reconcile.”

Crist is rumored to be considering a run to replace Florida Sen. Mel Martinez, a do-nothing Republican who announced he won’t seek re-election following one lackluster term. Jon discussed Schwarzenegger’s prospects (limited, unless we change the Constitution to allow foreign-born candidates) and if he is not Senate material, what with that body’s tradition of give and take, Crist clearly is.

George P. Bush, whose dad already said he won’t run for the seat, might well be considering it. Then again, if Charlie runs for Senate, that leaves a big hole in Tallahassee. What better way, if you’re a Bush, to start your own campaign than by trashing everyone else?

GOP Split with Schwarzenegger over Tax Hikes Headed for Divorce

“Arnold Schwarzenegger is like passing a kidney stone, and we’ve got another year to go,” said Jon Fleischman, a vice chairman of the California Republican Party. The GOP has parted ways with the governor because he reneged on his campaign promise never to raise taxes, a pledge he broke in order to resolve the state’s staggering $42 billion budget deficit. If Schwarzenegger and his party were a married couple, his party would be claiming irreconcilable differences and heading to divorce court.

Schwarzenegger could retire — or he could make another Terminator sequel, although it’s hard to game out why SkyNet would build an android that appears to be in its 60s and has hair plugs.

In a bit of fortuitous timing, on Friday, just hours after Schwarzenegger signed a budget bill that included $12.5 billion in tax hikes, he flew to Washington for the National Governors Association’s Winter Meeting. Meanwhile, in Sacramento, the California Republican Party gathered their annual convention. The mood there was dismal:

At a glum gathering of Republican faithful, GOP leaders hewed to the party’s traditional call to scale back government, even as many voters demand just the opposite to stop the economy’s downward slide.

[Fury] among Republicans over the $12.5 billion in tax hikes approved by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and the Legislature led to fratricidal maneuvers to punish the six GOP lawmakers who voted Friday for the state budget…

The panel also rejected a proposal by a few delegates to extend “a heartfelt and sincere apology” to former Gov. Gray Davis for promoting his 2003 recall. Schwarzenegger, the delegates said, has “proven to govern as a tax-and-spend politician precisely similar to the one he campaigned to replace in the recall election.”

Disapproval of the party’s own governor was a major theme at an event with little of the festive atmospherics usually on display at party confabs, apart from a life-size cutout of Sarah Palin that proved to be a popular photo stop.

Rep. Darrell Issa of Vista, who bankrolled the recall of Davis, put it less colorfully. “Quite frankly, he’s failed to change the fundamental spending in California,” Issa said.

Rep. Issa bankrolled the recall because he hoped to ride it to the governor’s mansion. He famously broke down on camera, sobbing over the lost opportunity (not to mention hundreds of thousands of dollars) when Schwarzenegger became the frontrunner.

It’s doubtful Schwarzenegger is concerned about the wrath of his party. For one thing, he’s a short-timer — term-limited out as of next year. He can retire to Bel Air and do nothing, if he chooses. Or he could make another Terminator sequel, although it’s hard to game out why SkyNet would build an android that appears to be in its 60s and has hair plugs.

Even if Schwarzenegger had additional political ambitions, it’s hard to see how the anger of his party could hurt him. The California GOP is broke and its voter registration is down to 31 percent, a historic low. One GOP analyst recently characterized the California Republican Party as “dead.” “Call the undertaker,” wrote Tony Quinn in December, “haul away the corpse.”

Mormon Pol: Gays Are ‘Greatest Threat to America I Know’

Anti-gay Utah state Sen. Chris Buttars ramps up the homo-hating rhetoric in a new documentary about Proposition 8, according to a reporter for ABC4 in Salt Lake City who has seen the as-yet unreleased film:

“It’s the beginning of the end. Oh, it’s worse than that. Sure. Sodom and Gomorrah was localized. This is worldwide.”

Sen. Chris Buttars: “Homosexuality will always be a sexual perversion. And you say that around here now and everybody goes nuts. But I don’t care.”

…”[Gays]’re mean. They want to talk about being nice. They’re the meanest buggers I have ever seen.”

And just seconds later, Buttars draws a comparison between some gays and radical Muslims.

“It’s just like the Muslims. Muslims are good people and their religion is anti-war. But it’s been taken over by the radical side.”

…He also talks about gay marriage being the beginning of the end.

Buttars: “What is the morals of a gay person? You can’t answer that because anything goes.”

And finally, this is how senator Buttars refers to the “radical gay movement.”

“They’re probably the greatest threat to America going down I know of.”

Another source quotes Buttars as also saying, “It’s the beginning of the end. Oh, it’s worse than that. Sure. Sodom and Gomorrah was localized. This is worldwide.”

According to ABC4, Buttars claims he’s “killed” every gay rights bill that has come up during the eight years he has been in the Utah senate.

Late last week, Republicans who control the Utah Senate stripped Buttars of two subcommittee chairmanships — the Senate Judiciary, Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Committee and the Senate Judicial Confirmation Committee.

But he was unrepentant. “I don’t have anything to apologize for,” he said, and:

“When it comes right down to it, I would rather be censured for doing what I think is right, than be honored by my colleagues for bowing to the pressure of a special-interest group that has been allowed to act with impunity.”

Reed Cowan, the filmmaker who made the documentary, “8: The Mormon Proposition,” is a former reporter for the station. He is now the Saturday morning anchor at WSVN in Miami.

RIP Socks the Cat, World Famous Feline-American

Socks the cat, who lived with the Clinton family at the governor’s mansion in Little Rock and at the White House, died today after a four-month battle with cancer. He was 20, and had been living with Betty Currie, Pres. Clinton’s former White House secretary, since 2000.

He was a gregarious animal, who enjoyed the company of people and even dogs. Friends and family recalled that he was also especially fond of chicken.

In his White House years, visiting heads of state often asked to have their photographs taken with Socks. And at one of the lowest moments in their fervor to persecute the Clintons, the Republicans in Congress even investigated the cat.

Quote du Jour

“We need to uptick our image with everyone, including one-armed midgets. Where we have fallen down in delivering a message is in having something to say, particularly to young people and moms of all shapes – soccer moms, hockey moms.”

— Michael Steele (1958 – ), Chair of the Republican National Committee and best hope yet for Democrats in the midterm elections

Republicans Rewrite the Tale of the Little Red Hen

Red Hen Republicans?

Once upon a time there lived a man in a big white house. He looked outside one day and saw many, many people suffering. “Hey everybody,” he said, “people are suffering and things are going to get worse fast. Who wants to help me write a stimulus bill?”

So Democrats and Republicans started putting together a stimulus bill but there was trouble almost immediately. “We don’t want to help everyone,” Republicans said, “we just want to give more tax breaks to our rich friends even if it wrecks the economy once and for all.”

Their leader, Michael Steele, even complained that Democrats don’t know how to create wealth. He was right that the best way to make some people rich is to let the people with the most money keep it all and borrow from others to pay for wars and private contractors and new bureaucracies that Republicans invent and give names like Homeland Security. That really does create wealth, just not for everyone.

So the Democrats pitched in to write the legislation and then the man in the big white house asked, “Who will help me pass the stimulus bill?”

Again, Republicans refused.

Rep. John Mica (R-Fla.) said, “…our efforts continue to keep the measure from being a spending free-for-all…Having been disappointed with both bailout measures, I believe my vote in opposition was appropriate.”

Democrats passed the package anyway, and the man in the big white house signed it and said, “Who will help me spend the money in the stimulus bill?”

Mica elbowed up to the front of the line.

“The timing couldn’t be better,” Mica said in a joint statement with [Democratic Florida Rep. Corrine] Brown, regarding $750 million in transportation funding in the bill, some of which is likely headed for the [Central Florida Commuter] Rail project.

“I applaud President Obama’s recognition that high-speed rail should be part of America’s future,” Mica said in a separate statement.

And so, the man in the big white house worked very hard to get a bill to help the people, and even though the Republicans didn’t help him, he shared the money in the stimulus package with them anyway.

“He’s a socialist,” the Republicans said. “Why, he’s practically red.”

Ryan Skipper’s Accused Killer Appears in Court with Face Tattoo Marking Him As a Murderer

Witness testimony began yesterday in the trial of Joseph Bearden, one of the two men accused of the cold-blooding killing of Ryan Skipper, an openly gay man, in Florida in March 2007. The trial of William Brown, the other accused killer, has not yet been scheduled. Both men face the death penalty if convicted.

Joe Bearden with teardrop tattoo

It is encouraging to learn that TruTv (formerly Court TV) is broadcasting Bearden’s trial live. In the channel’s preview of the case in the video above (which we found at Unfinished Lives), we learned that there have been a couple of interesting developments.

The first is that the prosecution has decided that the alleged killers’ motive for the murder was not violent homophobia — although the record indicates that Bearden and Brown must have been aware that Skipper was gay. Instead of prosecuting the murder as a hate crime, however, the state contends that Bearden and Brown decided to steal Skipper’s new car and sell it, most likely to get money for drugs.

Despite the fact that they stabbed Ryan at least 20 times inside the car before leaving him to die on the side of a road, Bearden and Brown reportedly attempted to sell the car several times in the few days before they were arrested.

From the TruTv report we also learn that during his nearly two-year incarceration, Joe Bearden has tattooed his face and upper body. The tattoo on his face appears to depict a teardrop, which in gang culture is a sign that the bearer has committed murder.

But mainly the report confirms what we already knew: Joe Bearden and William Brown are two of the biggest dumbasses ever to walk the planet. The tragedy is that a young man like Ryan Skipper, who had a wide circle of friends and a loving family, and whose life held such promise, ever crossed their paths.

Regular readers of these pages will remember that we covered this case extensively. You can catch up on it here.

Republican Blows Iraq Security by twittering About It

Hoekstra’s twitter feed

Just when you thought you could hold no more contempt for Republicans, along comes this bit of news: the former chair (when Republicans ran things) of the House Intelligence Committee breached security by twittering about a secret trip to Iraq — while he was there.

Security for the excursion was so tight that even the few media outlets that knew about it agreed not to report it. But that didn’t stop Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-Mich.) from twittering away on the subject like a tourist at Disneyworld.

“Just landed in Baghdad,” messaged Hoekstra, a former chairman of the Intelligence panel and now the ranking member, who is routinely entrusted to keep some of the nation’s most closely guarded secrets…

Not only did Hoekstra reveal the existence of the lawmakers’ trip, but included details about their itinerary in updates posted every few hours on his Twitter page, until he suddenly stopped, for some reason, on Friday morning.

Hoekstra, like most Republicans in politics, has never served in the military. What he has done, however, is build a long and distinguished history as a dumbass. It was Hoekstra, after all, who erroneously announced in 2003 that (chemical) weapons of mass destruction had been located in Iraq. A few years later, in 2006, a web site he created, along with Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) was shut down after the New York Times reported the site was helpful to anyone who would like to create their own nuclear weapon.

Which might explain why he posted top secret security information for the world to read in real time.

Since it’s already a matter of public record, here are some of Hoekstra’s twitter dispatches, typos and all, delivered in just 140 characters or less:

“On the way to Andrews Air Force base.12 hour flight to mid east. Be back on Mon instead of tues. Votes mon. I’ll keep you posted,” he wrote on Feb. 4

In his last dispatch today, he wrote: “Moved into green zone by helicopter Iraqi flag now over palace. Headed to new US embassy Appears calmer less chaotic than previous here [sic].”

It does not explain what House Minority Leader Rep. John Boehner was thinking when he included this moron on the trip.

Hoekstra is planning to retire at the end of his current term. We can only hope he won’t have the opportunity to pass along any other vital information first.

I’ve Been Snagged by Sarah Palin

beartrap.jpg

A few days back, I wrote a post about former veep candidate and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin starting up Sarah PAC, her own personal political action committee. I was going to sign up for updates only, but filling in that box led me to a whole online form, which there was no way I was going to complete. However, I got caught in that initial bear trap. That was Jan. 28. On Feb. 4 I received this:

Dear Supporter,

I wanted to take a moment to thank you for joining SarahPAC. What a week it has been! Thanks to supporters like you we have had a fabulous start.

I want you to know that I have been truly touched by your notes of support and encouragement and look forward to working with you all in the future to advance our shared ideas and goals. These are just a few of the touching notes I’ve received from you:

Don from Juneau, AK: “I joined the PAC, and I’m willing to help in any way I can. I firmly believe you are exactly what this country needs, more so now than ever. Go Sarah!”

Cindy from St. Louis, MO: “My husband and I signed up for the PAC this morning. We are thrilled and behind you 100%! We will help any way we can.”

Dee from Nashville, TN: “Be courageous! Be strong! Be bold! Don’t quit. Thanks for all you’ve done, there are many of us praying for you daily!”

As a nation, we face serious challenges ahead. Our country is far too dependent on foreign sources of energy. Greed and corruption have broken the public’s faith in our economic system.
