Reid’s Rejects: From left, Jackson, Davis, and Jones
I knew eventually that the Democratic party’s leadership being infiltrated by Mormons would hurt us. I have made clear I believe Mormonism to be a racist, sexist, homophobic, fraudulent, and bizarre cult so if you’re coming in late and are astounded that I make no apology for my views, well…you’re coming in late.
Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is making my worst fears a reality. How this man got to be Senate Majority Leader is a mystery to me but he needs to go. Reid is clearly letting his Mormon beliefs override good sense, assuming he has any. By calling on Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich not to appoint an African-American to succeed Barack Obama in the Senate, he is taking the Democratic party into the wacko zone with him.
From Mormonism’s earliest years, its leaders believed Africans were cursed descendants of Cain. As such, they were unfit for full participation.
Under the racial restrictions that lasted from the presidency of Brigham Young until 1978, persons with any black African ancestry could not hold the priesthood in the LDS Church and could not participate in some temple ordinances, such as the Endowment and celestial marriage…
The priesthood restriction was particularly limiting, because the LDS Church has a lay priesthood and all worthy male members may receive the priesthood. Young men are generally admitted to the Aaronic priesthood at age 12, and it is a significant rite of passage…Holders of the priesthood officiate at church meetings, perform blessings of healing, and manage church affairs. Excluding blacks from the priesthood meant that blacks could not hold significant church leadership roles or participate in certain spiritual events.
Don Harwell, a black LDS Church member, said, “I remember being in a Sacrament meeting, pre-1978, and the sacrament was being passed and there was special care taken by this person that not only did I not officiate, but I didn’t touch the sacrament tray…That was awfully hard, considering that often those who were officiating were young men in their early teens, and they had that priesthood. I valued that priesthood, but it wasn’t available.”
Reid, of course, didn’t explicitly state that no black people should join the Senate. Instead, he told Blagojevich there were three particular candidates he would not like to see picked. His reason? They can’t win in a statewide election. Let’s take a look at who Reid said couldn’t cut it.
- U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. — Sworn in to office in 1995 and re-elected every two years since. He sits on the House Appropriations Committee, the Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education and is the 2nd ranking Democrat on the Subcommittee on Foreign Operations, Export Financing, and Related Programs. He holds a bachelor’s in business management awarded magna cum laude from North Carolina A & T State University, a master’s in theology from the Chicago Theological Seminary, and a juris doctorate from the University of Illinois College of Law, as well as a number of honorary degrees.
- U.S. Rep. Danny Davis — First elected in 1996 and re-elected every two years since. He serves on the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, where he chairs the Subcommittee on the Federal Workforce, Postal Service and District of Columbia, and on the Committee on Education and Labor, and is a member of numerous caucuses. Before election to Congress, Davis was an educator, community organizer, health planner/administrator and civil rights advocate. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Arkansas A.M. & N. College, as well as a master’s from Chicago State University and a doctoral degree from the Union Institute in Cincinnati.
- State Sen. Pres. Emil Jones — Served in the Illinois General Assembly since 1973, and in the Senate since 1982. He is in his third term as Senate President where he is credited for helping Democrats to achieve a veto-proof majority. He graduated from Loop Junior College and attended Roosevelt University, majoring in business Aadministration. He was awarded honorary doctorates from Roosevelt and Chicago State University, and was inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society of Harold Washington College. Jones also sits on the board of the Forum of Senate Presidents, an organization of nationwide senate presidents.
All three of these guys sound good to me, as does Illinois Attorney General Roland Burris, whom Blagojevich selected. Two independent statewide polls showed Jackson in particular with broad support, both now and upon re-election in 2010. If Reid doesn’t come up with some compelling reasons why these candidates aren’t “electable” then we are left with our first reaction: he’s a Mormon racist and he needs to step aside for the good of the Democratic party.
Reid, step aside and take Pelosi with you!
I think it’s great that we’re talking about this, but I don’t think we should get rid of Reid since fear that racism acknowledged equals punishment, results in the perpetual denial that keeps us from fixing it. This is a good time to point out the difficulty African Americans have in obtaining appointments and other favors that flow in professional life, and how to change that. Also, this article might make people think twice about embracing the Mormon religion . . .

Reading the article from the Chicago Sun-Times I am not very confident in accepting the names from “sources” within the Blagojevich office, remember, they don’t exactly have a strong track record of honesty. Reading the letter from Reid it is clear that he does not want to accept any appointments from Blagojevich, he wants him to step down and the next person in line to make the appointments. So I am a bit hesitant to accept this story until it is proven more credible.
Whatever the reasons for the priesthood ban within the LDS church, and it is an issue that I have studied in depth and is much more complex than the few quotes you provide, I definitely do not think it would be manifested in this manner. If anything I find that Mormons have institutionally taken actions to overcompensate for this public image and that the general Mormon population jumped for joy when the ban was lifted.
You’re welcome to your beliefs about the Mormons and I suspect your impressions are a combination of the mainstream Mormon church and the fundamentalist groups but I have studied the mainstream’s theology and history in depth and have been in their community all my life and I find them to be extremely progressive in their theology and history regarding race and women, I think they are still a little homophobic culturally but doctrinally they are similar to all Biblical traditions, I can understand the fraudulent claim but plainly disagree with it, and I would say they are a bit quirky but not bizarre by any means.
But I know I’m coming in late, as you reference, and like I said you are welcome to your beliefs and I to mine but in this case I don’t think it is an accurate analysis of Reid’s behavior.

If you read the criminal charges about Blago you would see that he has a history of using the media and using lies to make a point. It’s somewhere between pg 52-65.

If any non-Mormon looks at the history of the Mormon Church they have to come to the conclusion that it was started by a charlatan, a charismatic charlatan, but a charlatan nonetheless, in Upstate New York. From the Golden Plates and their “translation” into the Book Of Mormon to polygamy and their belief that native Americans orginally came from Palestine, et al, it’s obviously a phony American-grown creed. There are many other American-grown creeds with equaly buffoonish beliefs but for any non-Mormon not having been raised in the church to convert to it would require an enormous amount of credulity. Add to that their phony past belief that blacks were “cursed by God” and it’s no wonder that anyone finds the Mormons objectionable. The Mormon Church stands or falls on the authenticity of the Book Of Mormon. No non-Mormon archaeologist considers it’s account of early human history in the Americas of any value whatsoever. It’s use of King James English as opposed to the venacular also hints at it’s phonyness. Sorry, but I’m with Trish on this one.

Starting with the expulsion of DINO Harry Reid, who along with his house counterpart little AIPAC whore Pelosi have done more damage to the American people through their complicit compliance with the Bush crime organization/family (and in Pelosi’s case she has abrogated her constitutional duty altogether) than any of the Bushes singlehandedly or together.
Pelosi and Reid should have been bounced the fuck out of congress.

It amazes me how many people are willing to counter what they consider bigotry with more bigotry. The validity of Mormonism is not the issue here. Should be we also analyze the validity of all religious beliefs or affiliations of every member of congress. Isn’t that bigotry. Is throwing Harry Reid out because he’s Mormon any different from treating a person differently because he/she is homosexual, black, Muslim, etc.? For me, this article exhibits the same sort of bigotry and ignorance exhibited by those who still insist, against all evidence, that Barack Obama is a Muslim, and the anti-Christ, and every other evil thing. I think American is weary of people like you, who cry racism every time an African American is rejected for an appointment, or accused of a misdeed, or convicted of a crime. That racism still exists, there’s no question. But incessantly tapping that one key on the piano, over and over again, to the annoyance of all around, is not going to help the fight against it. Moreover, to accuse a man of it, who couldn’t be further from it, is irresponsible and slanderous. You base it on scant evidence from one political incident. And the instead of pointing out addition incidences from his own life that support your accusation, you attack his religion. What religion is there that is not arguable fabricated, and based upon personal interpretation of the Bible by one or more people. Pat Buchanan, a conservative but not a Mormon, wisely pointed out, “it was the Christians who started slavery in this country, not Mormons.” So on that basis, is it safe to say that all Christians are racist, because they have racist roots? Many prominent bible characters were polygamists. Were they then all charlatans, and are all Christians also charlatans by association?
If the Mormon Church is truly sorry for the degredation that it inflicted on blacks prior to 1978, why doesn’t it officially extend an apology to the black communities around the world?
It is a fact that, from 1912 until 1978, the Mormon Church hired over 1,000 of its white members to operate a, investigative bureau within the Utah, Salt Lake City, Church organization, and other sub-groups around the country, which did racial checks on members, if their skin was dark, to determine if any part of their family history comprised black progenitors. It was as thorough, and pragmatic, in its detailed inquiries as the Nazi SS was in its check on Aryan Germans. Most of, if not all, the Salt Lake Mormon hierarchy still believe that the black race was cursed until 1978. And a good number of them still (secretly and personally) believe what Mormon Prophet Brigham Young said, 1851, about the curse of Cain not being officially lifted until Christ would come again to the earth.
Look at the Tabernacle Choir and the other Utah Mormon Church organizations and you will see how blacks are accepted into the Mormon Church on a token basis. There are very few blacks who attend Church meetings actively. This is because blacks are beginning to realize the tainted Mormon history that the Church has attempted to suppress since 1978.
Again, why doesn’t the Mormon Church offer the blacks, around the world, who were denied priesthood rights until 1978, an apology? It is because that the Brethern still believe that the blacks were cursed until the curse was lifted.

Actually, it’s because I have done my homework, Don, that I hold your cult in such contempt. If, like the average person, I just thought it was some slightly more conservative offshoot of Christianity, I would have mild benevolence toward it. I think Mormons count on Gentiles to know little about their actual beliefs. But I have looked into you guys, and I know enough to know that no member of the cult can leave its bizarre tenets out of their decision-making.

I am going to try and say this as nicely as possible, “You Ms. Ponder, are an as much a bigot against Mormons as Reid is against blacks.” Reid’s racism has NOTHING to do with his being Mormon, and everything to do with his being a racist of his own accord. I am a Mormon woman with an adopted African American child, who I love and cherish as much as my adopted white children. I know at least ten families just in my white Mormon acquaintances who have adopted African American children.
Saying that Mormons are racists because of some events in our history is like saying all Democrats are racists because the majority of early democrats were racists. I agree that Reid should be removed as Majority leader, but not because he is Mormon but because he is an arrogant, elitist jerk.

Even blacks can be bigots. Taking cheap shots against Mormons is bigotry. Hiding behind your race does not excuse you. It appears that there are many prominent black leaders who unabashedly attack Mormons and others And believe they can get away with it because they are black. This behavior is simply unacceptable from anyone and until people from all races and all religions and walks of life accept this racism, discrimination and bigotry will continue!
