Favorable rating of Sen. Ted Cruz, the Canadian-born senator from Texas, according to Gallup. The poll found that Cruz has succeeded in making a name for himself — 62% of Americans know who he is now, compared with 42% in June. But in his case, familiarity has bred contempt. His favorable rating has dropped 16 points, according to Gallup, “from a +6 net favorable (24% favorable, 18% unfavorable) in June to -10 (26% favorable, 36% unfavorable) today.”

Back in the Bush era, GOP Sen. Trent Lott of Mississippi lost his job as Senate majority leader after he remarked that the United States “wouldn’t have had all these problems” with African Americans if only S.C. Sen. Strom Thurmond had been elected president when Thurmond ran on the segregationist Dixiecrat Party ticket in 1948.
But Thurmond, who had turned 100 years old at the time Lott made that career-killing remark — had long ago swung decidedly to the left on civil rights, in part because he needed African-American votes to get elected and possibly because at least one of his children was black.

The GOP Drive to Deregulate Industry Goes ‘Boom’ in Texas – But Gov. Perry Diverts Attention by Feigning Outrage over a Political Cartoon
The loss of life in West, Texas, was tragic, but the tragedy itself is an illustration of the downside of the Republicans’ unstoppable zeal for deregulating industry at any cost. The cost in this case included the lives of 14 people who were killed when a fertilizer plant exploded on April 17.
In the wake of the blast, however, Gov. Rick Perry, who loves to brag about “poaching” businesses from California, where regulations are enforced, in part because the environment is fragile, deftly sidestepped accountability in the media, at least, by feigning outrage over a cartoon in the Sacramento Bee that shows depicted him saying, “Business is BOOMING in Texas,” in one frame and a giant explosion in the next. Perry has created quite a kerfuffle in the media by demanding an apology from cartoonist Jack Ohman.
For his part, Ohman is not budging:
Texas Republican Party Calls for Ban on Critical Thinking In Public Schools
The Texas GOP’s declarative position against critical thinking in public schools, or any schools, for that matter, is now an official part of their political platform. It is public record in the Republican Party of Texas 2012 platform [PDF, p. 13]. With regard to critical thinking, the Republican Party of Texas document states:
“Knowledge-Based Education – We oppose the teaching of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) (values clarification), critical thinking skills and similar programs that are simply a relabeling of Outcome-Based Education (OBE) (mastery learning) which focus on behavior modification and have the purpose of challenging the student’s fixed beliefs and undermining parental authority.” [PDF, p. 20).
Yes, challenging beliefs or claims is considered insubordinate, immoral and could lead to rebellion, disobedience or perhaps worse: revolution. For the Republican Party and their followers, thinking is subversive, imagination is a sin and the Republican Party in Texas and elsewhere is working to codify this into public policy. The plutocrats can’t have a working-class citizenry that is asking questions of those in power, be they parents or bosses; instead, the people must be taught the ideology of what is morally acceptable, what rules and regulations to follow. and even more importantly, how to accept and internalize hierarchical authoritarianism. Critical thinking is a direct challenge to the “leaders” and their claims on authority, and any opposition to vertical arrangements is ethically unacceptable to those in power.
The Republican Party runs Texas with virtually no opposition, so what the state GOP demands in its platform, it will get.
