150 Mormons Leave Sect But Mitt Romney Stays
The courage recently shown by 150 ordinary Americans whose action could, and likely will, cause them to lose everything and everyone they held dear in their lives, is awe-inspiring.
What bold and risky move did these people take? They left the Mormon sect.
A group of about 150 Mormons quit their church in a mass resignation ceremony in Salt Lake City on Saturday in a rare display of defiance ending decades of disagreement for some over issues ranging from polygamy to gay marriage.
Participants from Utah, Arizona, Idaho and elsewhere gathered in a public park to sign a “Declaration of Independence from Mormonism.”
…The Utah-based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is known for its culture of obedience, and the mass ceremony was a seldom-seen act of collective revolt.
Author Martha Beck has written extensively about her own decision to become an “apostate,” as Mormons call the people who leave the cult. She described the threats toward her family in her book, Leaving the Saints: How I Lost the Mormons and Found My Faith. These included promises to make her husband unemployable, ostracize her children, and more darkly, alert the “Danites,” a type of Mormon assassins whose existence, like polygamy, the church denies.
If you’ve read the book — and if you want to know more about the Latter Day Saints I highly recommend it, along with Jon Krakauer’s Under the Banner of Heaven — you realize how extraordinary was the move by these 150 people who could no longer go along with Mormonism’s bizarre teachings.
Polls Show Drop in Support for Romney – Race Resets to Status in April with Obama Holding Slight Lead
Here’s my theory. After it became clear that Mitt Romney was going to be the Republican nominee, persuadable voters — the “swingsters” — who somehow managed to avoid the clown-slash-horror show that was the GOP primary decided to give Romney a test drive. In other words, after tuning out the primaries, swing voters tuned in to check out Romney for themselves.

As we noted last week, Mitt Romney has adopted the Karl Rove/George Bush “blizzard of lies” strategy in which the the candidate or politician bombards voters with so many lies that it becomes impossible to keep up. Steve Benen at MaddowBlog, who has been doing a yeoman’s job tracking Romney’s lies, reports that last week — which was the 23rd week Benen has been tallying up Romney’s lies — Mitt told the most lies in any week so far.

The Issue That Romney Will Never Live Down
We don’t just “Like” Dogs Against Romney on Facebook, we love them! The group is dedicated to a single issue: that Mitt Romney was wrong, wrong, wrong in 1983 when he strapped a crate to the roof of the station wagon that he and his wife and five sons rode in on a trip to Canada while the family’s Irish Setter (whose name was pronounced “shame-us”) rode in terror and gastroenterologic stress above.
Now they are offering all kinds of merch that keeps the incident front and center, including the fabulous bumpersticker shown.
Romney Has Less Idea What He Thinks Than You Do
It’s gotten to the point now where you could ask Gov. Romney what he wants for breakfast and he will respond something like, “The president has failed to lead on this issue.”

Obama, even in the light of the recent Supreme Court ruling which supported the Obama Justice Department’s assertion that federal crimes cannot be created by state laws, such as those in Arizona.
New Poll Find That Just a Third of Voters View Romney Favorably – Lower by Double Digits Than the Losing Candidates in Recent Election History
George W. Bush ended his term as president in January 2009 with just one signature “accomplishment”: After eight years, he left office as the most unpopular president in the history of presidential polling — his unfavorable ratings were upside down for 39 straight months. When he finally flew back to Texas for good, Bush’s approval was a miserable 34 percent, according to Gallup.
Romney’s favorable rating is down to 30% in swing states in one poll – worse than George Bush’s overall 34% overall favorable rating when he left office.
With numbers like those, Bush could not have been reelected, obviously, were that even legally possible. In fact, no candidate who is viewed so negatively could be elected to any office, especially the presidency. Right?
Which brings us to Mitt Romney, the man who would be Bush’s successor as the next Republican president — the candidate who all but refuses to mention Bush as he campaigns — and the pol whose unfavorables among voters, especially in swing states are as bad, or, in at least one case, worse than Bush’s.
Romney Needs Rubio in Florida

Results of a Quinnipiac poll in Florida showing Obama moving ahead of Romney in the swing state. Among Latinos, Obama’s lead was even wider: 49 – 39. The telephone survey was taken June 12 through 18, both before and after Obama’s announcement that he will no longer enforce deportation of a narrowly defined group of Hispanic children and young adults. One would imagine Obama’s lead has only grown since, and that Mitt Romney will have even more reason to beg Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) to be his running mate.
Bloomberg Poll finds Obama 13 Points ahead of Romney among Likely Voters
