McConnell Predicts No Government Shutdown
“Look, there’s not going to be a government shutdown. It’s just not going to happen.”
— Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), quoted by The Hill, noting he “can’t imagine” Democrats “want to shut down the government over an issue that’s not an emergency.”
Tweet Trips Shutdown Talks
The scent of bipartisanship was, as usual, fleeting,

Goldman Sachs Predicts 50:50 Odds of Government Shutdown
50%
Goldman Sachs believes there is a 50% chance that the federal government will experience a short shutdown next month, CNBC reports. From the statement: “Presidential approval continues to decline, and is the lowest for any first-term president in his first year in office. Low approval ratings raise legislative risks. In the near term, we believe there is a 50% chance of a brief government shutdown, as the president seeks to solidify support among his base by embracing more controversial positions.”
Apparently There Are Two Kinds of Government Shutdown
“At times there could be a good shutdown, at times there may not be a good shutdown. There could be reasons at various times why that is the right outcome.”
— Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, quoted by The Hill, when asked about President Trump’s tweet earlier this year that “Our country needs a good ‘shutdown’ in September to fix mess!”

To avert a shutdown Congress acted forthwith.
They ignored Trump’s tweets
And averted defeat,
Extending the budget all the way to May 5th!

Shutdown’s a Win!
All the stuff in Trump’s budget — where to begin?
Though Congress’ heels seem to be firmly dug in.
But if the Hill denies it,
Trump just might not sign it,
Because to his way of thinking, a shutdown’s a win!
Showdown, Meltdown — Shutdown!

And the Trump team’s heading for a Congressional showdown.
On the right, there’s the Freedom Caucus,
On the left, the Democrats are raucous,
So we’re predicting another Trump administration meltdown.
