To hear them tell it, God is in constant communication with Republican politicians. In the current election cycle alone, he told no less than six out of the 16 (or whatever) Republican candidates that he wanted them to run for president.

He may have wanted them to run, but apparently he didn’t want at least five of them to win. Of the six — Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, Ohio Gov. John Kasich, evangelical cult leader Ben Carson, former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee — only Kasich is still in the race.

When God is not in direct communication with Republicans, he often sends signs and signals that believe they are uniquely able to interpret. For example, in 2005, the televangelist and one-time GOP presidential candidate Pat Robertson proclaimed that the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina was God’s punishment for legalized abortion.

Last February, the chairman of the Alabama Republican Party said that legal gay marriage would bring down God’s wrath upon the United States. In April, former Rep. Michele Bachmann warned that if America failed to support Israel, the country would “reap the whirlwind” of economic and natural disasters. In June, Shannon Grove, a Republican member of the California Legislature (yes, they do exist) said that the state’s drought was a punishment from God.

So how is it that Republicans — who seem to see messages from God everywhere — missed the loud-and-clear communication he sent last weekend when he called Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia home up to join him in heaven?

Within one hour after it was announced that Scalia had died, Senate Majority leader laid down a gauntlet. Pres. Obama should not waste his time by nominating Scalia’s replacement.

“The American people should have a voice in the selection of their next Supreme Court Justice,” McConnell said. “Therefore, this vacancy should not be filled until we have a new president.”

Of course, the American people have spoken about this issue — they said they wanted Pres. Obama to fill vacancies on the Court when the reelected him with a strong majority in 2012.

It’s tempting to suggest that if Republicans opt to ignore God’s will now, they may find his wrath turned upon them later — when he gives Donald Trump the delegates he needs to secure the nomination at the Republican Convention in Cleveland in July.
