An Appropriate Honor for Antonin Scalia

Gawker: “Last week, George Mason University announced that its law school would be renamed, at the request of an anonymous donor who gave $20 million to the program, after the late Supreme Court justice Antonin Scalia: the Antonin Scalia School of Law at George Mason University—ASS Law. (Or ASSoL.)”

The New York Times says the school will now be renamed again to The Antonin Scalia Law School.

Scalia Wasn’t So Great

Antonin Scalia, who died this month, after nearly three decades on the Supreme Court, devoted his professional life to making the United States a less fair, less tolerant, and less admirable democracy. Fortunately, he mostly failed. Belligerent with his colleagues, dismissive of his critics, nostalgic for a world where outsiders knew their place and stayed there, Scalia represents a perfect model for everything that President Obama should avoid in a successor.

To hear them tell it, God is in constant communication with Republican politicians. In the current election cycle alone, he told no less than six out of the 16 (or whatever) Republican candidates that he wanted them to run for president.

He may have wanted them to run, but apparently he didn’t want at least five of them to win. Of the six — Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, Ohio Gov. John Kasich, evangelical cult leader Ben Carson, former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee — only Kasich is still in the race.
