Number of references to former presidents that Newt Gingrich has woven into the debates of the 139 total candidate references to ex-presidents this cycle to date — nearly three times more than his closest name dropper, Rick Santorum, at 22, according to Smart Politics.
Newt Pledges to Uphold 1996 Defense of Marriage Act – Even Claims Credit for DOMA, Which He Enacted While Having an Affair
In a letter this week to an Iowa anti-gay hate group, Republican frontrunner Newt Gingrich pledged that, “[as] President, I will vigorously enforce the Defense of Marriage Act, which was enacted under my leadership as speaker of the House, and ensure compliance with its provisions, especially in the military. I will also aggressively defend the constitutionality of DOMA in federal and state courts.” (Emphasis added.)
I had promised myself I was going to lay off Newt during the primaries because I don’t want anything to jinx his chances of winning the Republican nomination, which is the clearest path to reelection for Pres. Obama. But this is too rich to resist.
First of all, why would anyone believe anything an old philanderer like Newt would say about marriage? Secondly, what Newt doesn’t say, of course, is that at the same time he was pushing DOMA through Congress, he, was in the second year of an adulterous affair that was as risky to his party — Republicans were still posing as paragons of family values back then — as it was reckless and damaging to his family.
As Gingrich Rises in Polls, Obama, Romney Fade
It is not hyperbolic to suggest that the future of America’s prosperity hangs in the balance in the next election. But less than a year out from the vote on Nov. 6, 2012, current polling finds 1) bad news, 2) theoretically better news but then 3) the worst development yet.

Truth be known, many in the liberal media are belittling the Republican candidates because they don’t want any of them to be taken as a serious challenger to their man, Obama.
Readers of the Union Leader and Sunday News know that we don’t back candidates based on popularity polls or big-shot backers. We look for conservatives of courage and conviction who are independent-minded, grounded in their core beliefs about this nation and its people, and best equipped for the job.
We don’t have to agree with them on every issue. We would rather back someone with whom we may sometimes disagree than one who tells us what he thinks we want to hear.
Newt Gingrich is by no means the perfect candidate. But Republican primary voters too often make the mistake of preferring an unattainable ideal to the best candidate who is actually running. In this incredibly important election, that candidate is Newt Gingrich. He has the experience, the leadership qualities and the vision to lead this country in these trying times. He is worthy of your support on January 10.

In Wake of Sex Harassment Charges against Cain, Poll Finds a Slight Shift Among GOP Voters to Disgraced Serial Adulterer Gingrich
In the mid-1990s, no political demographic was more outraged over Pres. Bill Clinton’s sexual affairs than Republican women. Their wrath, along with the moral condemnations of the GOP’s evangelical base, fueled the drive by their party’s elected leaders in Washington — led then by House Speaker Newt Gingrich — to do politically to the president what Lorena Bobbitt did to John.
Now, just 15 years or so later, and faced with charges that their party’s frontrunner, Herman Cain, has sexually harassed who knows how many of his female employees, Republican women take a different view. A CBS News poll finds that just 38 percent of them see the charges against Cain as a reason not to vote for him:
[Sixty-one] percent of Republican primary voters say the sexual harassment accusations against Cain won’t make any difference in their vote, but 30 percent say the charges make them less likely to back him, and that rises to 38 percent among women. Cain has lost support among women since last month – from 28 percent in October to 15 percent now. He has lost ground with conservatives and Tea Party supporters as well.

Forbes Magazine publisher, flat tax advocate and failed ’96 presidential candidate Steve Forbes has endorsed Rick Perry, in part because Perry has released a half-cooked economic plan that includes a 20 percent flat tax. In an interview with political gossipist Lloyd Grove titled, “Forbes: ‘Perry Will Be the Nominee,'” Forbes said, “Whatever part of the Republican establishment has gone to Romney is almost by default — not because they really like him or because they’re writing big checks or bundling large amounts of money. So if Perry or somebody else comes along and catches fire, which I think Perry will, Romney is going to be stuck at his 23 percent or maybe even less.” - Ron Brownstein reminds us how Forbes’ flat-tax proposal flattened his campaign in 1996, paving the way for then Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole to win their party’s nomination that year. In the general campaign, Pres. Bill Clinton’s tean cleverly paired (by then retired) Senate leader Dole with his uber-unpopular counterpart in the House, Speaker Newt Gingrich, and easily won reelection.
- Steve Benen notes that Perry is promising to add 2.5 million jobs if elected president — which, says Benen, means “Rick Perry believes he’ll be able to create the same number of jobs in four years that Barack Obama has created in a year and a half.”

Call him “Miss Ross.” Apparently Herman Cain has taken a cue from Diva Diana. Ex-staffers say they were instructed by memo, “Do not speak to him unless you are spoken to.”
