Paul Ryan Refuses to Say How Romney Will Fix the Economy But Bristles At the Idea It Is a Nixonian ‘Secret Plan’

Yesterday, while David Gregory was lobbing softballs at Mitt Romney on “Meet the Press” on NBC, over on the ABC News Sunday show, George Stephanopoulos gave Congressman Paul Ryan a tougher time, especially when — at about 02:50 on the video above, which is transcribed below — Ryan refused to name a single loophole he and Romney would close in order to help pay for the massive tax cut they are promising to give the 1 Percent.

Watch how Ryan bristles when Stephanopoulos characterizes the Republican campaign’s refusal to lay out what it will do to restore economic growth as a “secret plan.”

In 2008, Republicans nominated a candidate for vice president who seemingly could not open her mouth without lying. She lied so persistently that after the campaign, Steve Schmidt, a top strategist for the McCain-Palin campaign said, “There were numerous instances that she said things that were — that were not accurate that ultimately, the campaign had to deal with, and that opened the door to criticism that she was being untruthful and inaccurate. And I think that is something that continues to this day.”

In 2012, it appears Republicans have done it again. In his speech accepting his nomination for the vice presidency, bombarded his audience with so many lies that even Fox News could not find a way to pretend to ignore them.

The Romney Campaign Says That Of All the Lies In Paul Ryan’s Convention Speech, the Only One That Worries Them Is His False Claims about the Janesville SUV Plant Closing

Last week, Romney pollster Neil Newhouse told reporters that the Romney campaign believes its candidates can lie to voters with impunity.

“Fact checkers come to this with their own sets of thoughts and beliefs, and we’re not going to let our campaign be dictated by fact checkers,” he said. He told a reporter later that fact-checking had “jumped the shark.”

One particularly vivid display of the campaign’s strategy of disregarding the truth was in the speech delivered by Romney’s running mate Paul Ryan at the convention. Reporters have identified a half dozen or so false statements in the speech, including:

Ann Romney’s Convention Speech Omitted the Fact That She and Mitt Lived on Proceeds from Stocks During Their Hard Times in College

Ann Romney’s speech to the Republican National Convention last night included an anecdote about the hard times she and Mitt faced when they were young — a story intended to assure middle class voters that, despite the fact that the Romneys are multimillionaires, they’re really just regular folks like you and me:

Anderson Cooper Confronts GOP Operative Kellyanne Conway on CNN with Facts That Disprove Her False Claim about Rise in Sex-Selection Abortions

We’re so used to Republican operatives going on cable news shows and lying with impunity that it has become newsworthy when a news host exposes one of them in a lie in real time during a broadcast.

This happened recently on CNN when Soledad O’Brien challenged disgraced former Bush I chief of staff John Sununu, a Mitt Romney surrogate, during an interview after he trotted out the Romney campaign’s lie that Pres. Obama had “gutted Medicare.”

Similarly, Anderson Cooper challenged Republican operative/pollster Kellyanne Conway when she attempted to distort a conversation about Missouri tea party candidate Todd Akin’s claim that women’s ovaries naturally repel the sperm of rapists by interjecting a false claim (at about 03:30 in the video above) that there has been a rise in sex-selection abortions in the United States:

Busted: Charles Krauthammer Is 100% Wrong about When the Churchill Bust Was Loaned to the Bush White House – It Was in July 2001, Not after 9/11

Pres. Obama recently remarked that politics can sometimes seem small. A prime example of this smallness is the controversy Republicans have been stoking for three-plus years now over the disposition of a bust of Winston Churchill that was loaned to the Bush White House in 2001. The latest stoke came yesterday from the right-wing Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer, in an article titled, “Busted: Mr. Pfeiffer and the White House blog“:

The Root of Mitt Romney’s Comfort with Lying: His Mormon Faith

From the series “Republicans on the Couch” by Justin Frank, M.D., at Time Magazine:

I found myself discussing this situation [Romney’s ability to lie with ease] with several colleagues, and we agreed that Romney doesn’t lie. Let me repeat: Mitt Romney doesn’t lie. He is telling the truth as he sees it — and truth it is, the facts notwithstanding. This is not simply a case of Hamlet arguing about point of view, saying, “For there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.”

This is about a conflict between evidence and faith. There is a long tradition in the Mormon belief system in which evidence takes second place to faith. Examples abound, as when two Mormon elders who were questioned about the inconsistency in passages from the Book of Mormon said, “We know the Book of Mormon is true and that it contains the Word of God even in the face of evidence that appears contradictory,” according to The Mormon Missionaries by former Mormon Janice Hutchison. Thus there are no lies, only faith-based certainty that translates as truth for which no apology is needed, since what was said was not a lie.

Last week, top Republican propagandists led by Karl Rove latched onto proof — finally — that Pres. Obama hates America.
