Palin: McCain’s VP Choice Is a Former Beauty Queen With Rightwing Views and a Thin Resume

Dan Quayle in a Skirt

In the above clip, you’ll see Alaska governor Sarah Palin interviewed by the nauseatingly unctuous Glenn Beck, which makes the clip NSE (not safe for eating while watching). The interview actually starts at 4:20.

She is on the program to discuss her lawsuit against the Bush administration to stop them from including polar bears on the endangered species list, and reveals herself to be a rabid anti-environmentalist and a strong proponent of global warming, who favors drilling in her state’s pristine wildernesses.

Here are some highlights from her biography:

  • She was born in 1964, and is the youngest and first female governor of Alaska
  • She’s a former beauty queen: In 1984, Palin was second-place in the Miss Alaska beauty pageant after winning the Miss Wasilla contest earlier that year, winning a scholarship to help pay her way through college. In the Wasilla pageant, she played the flute and also won Miss Congeniality
  • She is married to her high school sweetheart, Todd Palin. They have five children, including a son who is serving in Iraq
  • Her political resume appears to be thin. She was a city councilmember and mayor in Wasilla, ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor of Alaska and then served as the ethics chair of a state energy commission, but later resigned in disgust at the unethical behavior she uncovered. She has been governor since January 2007
  • She is a former follower of Christian nationalist Pat Buchanan and is a member of Feminists for Life and opposes gay marriage. However, she claims to have gay friends and vetoed a measure that would have withheld benefits for gay state employees
  • She likes to hunt and eat moose burgers

Update: And now we know this darling of the so-called “values voters” has also smoked pot and is a practiced, serial liar, which appears to be why Karl Rove chose her for the ticket.

McCain Appears to Have Picked Sarah Palin as VP Nominee

Pawlenty, Romney Said to Be Out

Update 7:39 PDT: NBC News’ Kelly O’Donnell has confirmed that McCain has picked Palin.

No less a source than Fox News says this morning that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is en route to Ohio this morning, and is likely to be John McCain choice to be his running mate.

Fox also reports that former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is out of the running. Meanwhile, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty told a local radio station this morning that he will not be in Ohio later today when John McCain names his vice presidential running mate.

About Palin, Fox reports that “a charter aircraft from Anchorage had arrived in Dayton, Ohio, where McCain has scheduled a noon ET rally to announce his choice.”

Of course, because the source is Fox News, the story about Palin could be disinformation sent out by the McCain campaign in order to create confusion and embarrass the “liberal media.”

Crist Rigs Vote Against Florida Felons

veepometer.jpg
Apparently, Republican Florida Gov. Charlie Crist is determined to further the state’s reputation as a hostile environment in which to vote in presidential elections. That, or he believes that most felons are Democrats. Either way, his belated executive order restoring voting rights to felons who have served their time just five weeks before the deadline to register to vote in the November election smacks of vote-rigging.

He was asked to issue the order last December by the American Civil Liberties Union, but waited until this week to actually do something about it. According to the Orlando Sentinel, only 9,000 of the 112,000 felons who would be eligible to vote actually have registered. There’s a whole process of reinstating one’s civil rights that has to be completed before a convicted felon can even register to vote in Florida, and that takes time.

Seems Charlie Crist figures that by kissing a girl and rigging the system so that nearly 100,000 Floridians will be denied the opportunity to vote in the upcoming election he will earn the chance to be John McCain’s running mate. Fat chance, Charlie.

Crist had better hope he never gets nailed for a felony, or he’ll be the Sweetheart of Cellblock C in a Tallahassee minute.

Novak: Lieberman Would Be a ‘Disaster’ As McCain’s VP Pick

Bob Novak, the rightwing columnist who treasonously revealed the clandestine identity of CIA WMD investigator Valerie Plame, has been diagnosed with a brain tumor, but recently returned to producing short squibs for his syndicate, including the latest on Joe Lieberman’s chances of being named as John McCain’s VP on Friday:

Reports of strong support within John McCain’s presidential campaign for Independent Democratic Sen. Joseph Lieberman as the Republican candidate for vice president are not a fairy tale. Influential McCain backers, plus McCain himself, would pick the pro-choice liberal from Connecticut if they thought they could get away with it.

But they can’t get away with it — and this has been made clear to McCain by none other than Joe Lieberman himself.

Lieberman surely doesn’t know that much about Republican politics, but he has close Republican friends. One of them prevailed on Lieberman to tell McCain that a McCain-Lieberman ticket would be a disaster for all concerned, and especially for the GOP.

Oh please, let it be Joe. Please!

What Hillary Didn’t Say, and Why

It must be hard to give a good speech when you know that even before you finish, people will be dissecting your every word and movement.

A “body language expert” gave his impressions of what Hillary really meant.

“When she spoke about Obama, she really did not emote very much,” [“Face Time” author Dan] Hill said. “The only thing she showed was a very weak smile, the cheeks didn’t tend to lift very much, it was really almost what I would call a ‘crocodile smile’ where even the slight corners of the lips sometimes raise into a little bit of a smirk.”

You’d have to have some mixed emotions in a situation like that, so her body language really didn’t bother me. But for some reason, her opening kind of did.

Hillary went as far into her personal life as being a proud mother but not a proud wife. I can’t help but think the omission was deliberate.

I am so honored to be here tonight.
(applause)
You know, I’m — I’m here tonight as a proud mother, as a proud Democrat…
(applause)
… as a proud senator from New York…
(applause)
… a proud American…
(applause)
… and a proud supporter of Barack Obama.
(applause)
My friends, it is time to take back the country we love…

Maybe it’s because the camera kept panning to Bill’s face in the audience but I thought it was strange that Hillary went as far into her personal life as being a proud mother but not a proud wife. He looked like a proud husband. She’s been a proud wife before. How to explain it?

I can’t help but think the omission was deliberate. Although Jon disagrees that any major part of Hillary’s success is because she’s the WOB (wife of Bill), I think quite a lot of it is. And I think she must at least be sensitive to such musings and wanted to be at the Democratic convention as someone who got there on her own two feet — only. All during the campaign she claimed this or that insight, experience, or qualification because of her position, not as freshman senator from New York (after all, she has less history of holding elective office than Obama), but as First Lady.

But the occasion was meant to honor her accomplishment at “glass ceiling breaking” so there wasn’t room in the spotlight for husbands. During the campaign, Hillary had to act a certain way because she is a woman. She was held to a different standard because she is a woman. She had to embrace her femaleness and deny it at the same time. Men, you’ll just have to take my word on it.

It’s a shame that on the most challenging night of her professional life thus far, she felt she still had to deny that any part of her accomplishments came because of whose wife she is. Obama — and any man — is free to credit others generously, and would not have finished the speech of a lifetime (so far) without acknowledging his wife. Too bad Clinton, and most other women, don’t have the same leeway to recognize husbands without feeling it lessens them.

Michigan and Florida Voters to be Recognized

From the Florida Democratic Party:

DENVER – At the request of Senator Barack Obama, the Democratic National Convention’s Credentials Committee today voted to restore full voting strength to the delegates from Michigan and Florida, bringing the primary dispute to closure.

Florida Democratic Party Chair Karen L. Thurman issued the following statement from Denver:

“Every Floridian should be pleased with the unanimous decision of the credentials committee. I’d like to thank the 1.75-million Democrats who got out and voted in the Florida primary, along with Senators Obama and Clinton and the DNC leadership for their support of restoring our vote.

“Today, our party unites once and for all. This Thursday, when Barack Obama accepts the Democratic nomination, he will do so with the support of the Florida delegation.

We figured as much but it’s still nice to see we’re being included.

Ryan Skipper’s Family Endorses Obama

Lakeland, Fla., Ledger:

The Obama campaign has found a supporter in the family of Ryan Skipper, a 25-year-old gay man from Winter Haven who was killed last year in what authorities have ruled a hate crime.

Presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama’s Web site pride.barackobama.com is dedicated solely to detailing the Illinois Democrat’s support of gay rights. In a campaign e-mail and blog posted on the Web site Thursday, Obama’s campaign referenced Skipper’s story and linked to a YouTube video recorded and posted online by Skipper’s brother, Damien Skipper.

In the video, Skipper describes his brother’s death as a tragedy that had additional weight because Ryan Skipper was gay.

“I know most of you watching this can understand how difficult it is to lose a loved one,” he says. “Now just take a moment to consider how difficult it would be to lose a loved one in the manner we lost Ryan. And then consider that Ryan was killed because of who he was. Ryan was killed because he was an openly gay man. That’s sickening.”

Skipper was found stabbed to death on the side of a Wahneta road March 15. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office called his slaying a hate crime after they said a witness told them the men charged in his killing did it because Skipper was gay…

Skipper recorded the video after campaign staffers contacted his family and asked them to share Ryan’s story in support of changes to federal hate crimes legislation.

In the video, Damien Skipper urges viewers to support the Matthew Shepard Act, proposed legislation that seeks to add sexual orientation and gender identity to existing federal hate crime laws which currently include only race, religion, ethnicity and nationality.

“We as a society have an opportunity to make a change. We have the opportunity to provide equality for the LGBT community,” Skipper says in the video.

“My family strongly supports Barack Obama in his campaign for the presidency due in large part to his support for the Matthew Shepard Act. Please join us.”
