CA Gov: State Agency Says Whitman Ad Claiming Brown Raised Taxes Is False – Whitman Refuses to Take Ad Down
A claim in a Meg Whitman television ad that state taxes went up when Democratic rival Jerry Brown was governor from 1975 to 1983 is false, according to the state Department of Finance.
“Taxes went down, by this yardstick, yes,” said H.D. Palmer, spokesman for the department, who added that the figures are the result of an impartial, nonpartisan analysis of the data. “The data you have in front of you does not have an R suffix or a D suffix after them. The Department of Finance calculated these numbers in a consistent manner over Republican and Democratic administrations.”
…Brown took office in January 1975, midway through the 1974-75 fiscal year. The first budget under his command covered the 1975-76 fiscal year. The CNN report appeared to use the 1973-74 year at its baseline.
According to Department of Finance data available in 1992, total state taxes when Brown took office were $7.03 per every $100 in income. He left office in January 1983, so his last budget covered the 1982-83 fiscal year. Taxes then were $6.83 per every $100 in income.
The Whitman campaign rebuffed Brown campaign demands that they stop running the false ad. “That’s ridiculous,” said Whitman spokesman Darrel Ng.

GOP Now Running Against Wall Street Bailout They Voted for – Here’s a List of GOP Reps and Senators Who Voted ‘Aye’
On MSNBC last night, Rachel Maddow looked at the political rationale behind the White House decision to make House Speaker Wanna-Be John Boehner, R-Ohio, the face of the “Party of No” in the midterm elections.
Boehner was chosen, in part, because he is a boozey, overly tanned cartoonish character, but mainly because he was the GOP leader in 2008, back when it was the Bush rubberstamp party. In late September 2008, when the United States financial system was in freefall, Boehner took to the well of the House and tearfully begged the Republican caucus to support the Bush bank bailout of Wall Street and the “too big to fail” banks, officially known as the “Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008”:
REP. JOHN BOEHNER, MINORITY LEADER: Think about what happens if we don’t pass this bill, think about what happens to your friends, your neighbors, your constituents. So, I ask all of you, both sides of the aisle: what’s in the best interest of our country? Not what’s in the best interest of our party, not what’s in the best interest of our own re- election– what’s in the best interest of our country? Vote yes.
The bailout eventually passed both houses of Congress, with over 90 Republicans in the House and 33 GOP senators voting yes. (There’s a complete list at the below.) The vote was taken before the rise of the GOP’s astroturfed tea party mobs and their virulent opposition to Obama policies — particularly the government funding of programs intended to resolve the financial collapse brought on by the Bush Recession.
Since the rise of tea baggery, many, if not most, of the Republicans in Congress have made a spectacle of themselves by desperately kowtowing to the mob, so it is surprising to see many of their names on the list of Republicans who voted “aye” on the tea baggers’ much-despised Wall Street Bailout.
NBC Poll Also Had Results That Bust Media’s Pro-GOP Election Narrative, Including 43% Split on Who Should Run Congress
If you listen to cable news and read corporate-media political sites, it’s all over for the Democrats. Why bother waiting for the vote on Nov. 2? Dems should just quietly step aside and let Speaker John Boehner and the Republicans move in, drapes and all, to their new digs at the Capitol.
The NBC poll found that 58 percent falsely believe Boehner and the Republicans have an economic plan that is different from their policies under Bush. What Democrats must show voters is that, simply put, Boehnernomics is just Bushonomics warmed over.
Case in point was, as we noted yesterday, the five days that the media flogged away at a Gallup generic congressional poll that gave the GOP a 10 point advantage — a first for either party in the history of the poll. Today, in the wake of a new edition yesterday of the same poll showing that the GOP’s 10 point lead has vanished — the parties are tied at 46 percent — discussion of the Gallup generic poll has also disappeared. Funny how that works.

Breaking! GOP’s Much Ballyhooed 10 Point Lead in Gallup Poll Disappears – Dems, GOP Tied
For the past umpteen news cycles, corporate media has been hammering results of the previous edition of the Gallup congressional generic poll which gave the GOP a 10 point lead over Dems — the first-ever 10-point spread, we were told. A strong lead for the GOP fits the media’s current carved-in-stone narrative that voters are ready to return Republicans to power in November.
Over the Labor Day holiday, the GOP’s 10 point lead warranted a mention in just about every story on the midterms, in newspapers, online and on cable — particularly on supposedly liberal MSNBC. Well, look how the worm has turned now, via Gallup:
Republicans and Democrats are tied at 46 percent among registered voters in Gallup’s weekly tracking of congressional voting preferences, marking a shift after five consecutive weeks in which the Republicans held the advantage.
Sure, the worm can turn again, but for now at least this thing ain’t over. And it’s possible — just maybe — that independent voters are starting to realize that sending arsonists in to put out the fire they set may not be a good idea.

When tea bagger and fired CEO Rick Scott chose Florida Rep. Jennifer Carroll as his running mate, it was obvious that he did so for cynical reasons. Seeing the pair go before the press confirms it. Carroll has no idea what an “Arizona-style immigration law” is, and asks the reporter to explain it to her. Scott goes from seething with annoyed indulgence (his usual posture with the press and voters) to looking concerned as Carroll’s lack of knowledge on the topic is exposed. For the record, Carroll was born in Trinidad.
NV Sen: Angle Was Voted Worst Legislator When She Served in State Assembly
Angle twice was chosen the worst Assembly member in polls conducted by the Las Vegas Review-Journal after the legislative sessions. She was named the second-worst and the third-worst member in her other sessions.
Legislators, lobbyists and press members participated in the polls. The same number of Republican legislators as Democrats were given poll forms. The polls were anonymous…
[Former] Assembly Speaker Richard Perkins, D-Henderson, said Angle’s constituents lost because her political views were too extreme for the mainstream and she would not work with others to pass bills.
Based on her legislative performance, he predicts Nevadans will be the real losers if they elect her to the U.S. Senate. Perkins backs incumbent Sen. Harry Reid, a Democrat.
“She had every opportunity to be part of an effective group,” Perkins said. “But her views were too radical. If she is elected to the U.S. Senate, the state will go from No. 1 to No. 100 in power and stature. She would be a disaster for Nevada. No one in the Senate is going to listen to Sharron Angle.”
