Celebrating Labor Day? Guess You’re a Socialist, Pro-Union, Anti Job Creator Commie

strikeIf today means more to you than packing away your white shorts and shoes, you’re probably a pro-union type who supports raising the minimum wage. But if you’re like most Americans, it’s just another amorphous, somehow patriotic Monday holiday on which to cook out, drink beer, and if you’re like my neighbors last night, inexplicably shoot off fireworks.

I’m not sure how Labor Day got hijacked into being another red, white, and blue affair. Yet the Labor Day sale signs in store windows feature stars and stripes along with promises of savings.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s website tells it straight. The holiday is in recognition of the power of worker collectives, and what they accomplish when they band together and refuse to be abused by, wait for it…job creators.

Sophie’s Choice, in Reverse

This is part of Florida’s long, proud of history of only embarrassing itself when we’re sure everyone else is watching.

— Scott Maxwell, columnist for the Orlando Sentinel, advising Floridians on how to survive the next two months, in which the contest for governor between incumbent Rick Scott and former Charlie Crist will feel like choosing, “between rug burn or road rash.”

Pres. Obama’s Statement on Robin Williams

In full:

Robin Williams was an airman, a doctor, a genie, a nanny, a president, a professor, a bangarang Peter Pan, and everything in between. But he was one of a kind. He arrived in our lives as an alien – but he ended up touching every element of the human spirit. He made us laugh. He made us cry. He gave his immeasurable talent freely and generously to those who needed it most – from our troops stationed abroad to the marginalized on our own streets. The Obama family offers our condolences to Robin’s family, his friends, and everyone who found their voice and verse thanks to Robin Williams.

May we just add, nice use of the word, “bangarang,” Mr. President.

CNN Anchor Tweets Ultimate FOX Slam

The snark in the Washington Times’ recent Valerie Richardson’s piece, “Al Gore’s Climate-Changers at EPA Hearings Foiled by Cool Temperatures” was too much for CNN’s Bill Weir, who read it after it was picked up by FOX Nation.

Weir tweeted his contempt for climate change deniers at FOX, and presumably, the Washington Times, who use the term “global warming” literally, to mean that temperatures will always increase, everywhere, every day. Instead, climate change scientists see an increase over time, with extremes like cold snaps in summer and winter blizzards from increased moisture in the atmosphere as part of the problem. Anyone who has watched the video narrated by former Vice Pres. Al Gore, An Inconvenient Truth, understands.

Another School Hit in Gaza; Another Denial by Israel

6

Number of schools serving as shelters bombed in Gaza in three weeks of fighting. Israel, like Bashar al-Assad in Syria and Vladimir Putin in Russia, claims the hits were the result of “errant rocket fire” from the other side. The UN says it supplied the coordinates of the girls’ elementary school most recently hit to Israel 17 times. The United States agreed after the strike to send more ammunition to Israel, as the governments of Chile, Peru, Brazil and Ecuador withdrew their ambassadors to the country in protest of the civilian killing.

Boeing CEO Might Want to Retire After All

The heart will still be beating, the employees will still be cowering.

— Jim McNerney, CEO of Boeing Aircraft, explaining why he won’t retire when he turns 65 next month. McNerney apologized for the part about his employees cowering, saying it was a joke, after their representatives labeled it, “the Jack Welch style of anti-personnel management.”
