Gay Bishop Who Almost Imploded Anglical Church to Pray for Obama

In yet another gesture to the gay and lesbian community, Pres.-Elect Obama has invited Bishop Gene Robinson (any relation to Michelle Robinson Obama?) to deliver a prayer in the lead-up to the Obama inauguration.

New Hampshire Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson, at the center of the Anglican church’s global battle over homosexuality, will speak on Sunday on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial…

Robinson has called the choice of Warren a slap in the face. But he said on Monday he did not believe Obama invited him in response to the Warren criticism but his prayer would help ease concerns among gay and lesbians.

He said he believed the invitation, which came about two weeks ago, was made because he endorsed Obama in May last year. The two also met during the presidential primary.

I’m sure the invitation was at least in part because of the reaction to Rick Warren but I also don’t think that’s a bad thing. Obama was never going to un-invite Warren but he’s willing to show he’s learning. Learning is good.

Robinson said he advised Obama several times during his presidential campaign.

“I was very early on taken with his anti-polarization message,” he said. “So part of the invitation came out of the albeit brief relationship that we have had.”

The 77 million-member Anglican Communion, a global federation of national churches, has been in upheaval since 2003 when the Episcopal Church consecrated Robinson as the first bishop known to be in an openly homosexual relationship in more than four centuries of church history…

Joe Solmonese, president of gay rights advocates the Human Rights Campaign, called Robinson’s selection “encouraging.”

Another Reason Not to be a Christian: Mark Driscoll

That people are willing to sit and listen to this filth says a lot about the state of Christianity today. I realize not all churches go in for this sort of thing, but Mark Driscoll is the next “It” guy in the born-twice world and he’s not only a throwback to the Pat Robertson/James Dobson school of spleen venting by portly angry white guys who can’t get real jobs, he goes them all one better.

Driscoll, like many zealots, says he knows what God thinks. But Driscoll says he also knows how God feels, and how He feels is that He hates you. From the Mars Hill Church web site:

Driscoll, based in Seattle, strikes us as the kind of pastor Sarah Palin would high-five and pray with. What is it about cold climates and religious whack jobs?

the Total Depravity of Man

We believe that man was created in the image and likeness of God, but that through Adam’s sin the race fell, inherited a sinful nature, and became alienated from God; man is totally depraved and of himself utterly unable to remedy his lost condition…

Driscoll, based in Seattle, strikes us as the kind of pastor Sarah Palin would high-five and pray with. What is it about cold climates and religious whack jobs? Makes me want to stay right here in the South, where our religious whack jobs are at least happy.

Mark Driscoll is American evangelicalism’s bete noire.* In little more than a decade, his ministry has grown from a living-room Bible study to a megachurch that draws about 7,600 visitors to seven campuses around Seattle each Sunday, and his books, blogs and podcasts have made him one of the most admired — and reviled — figures among evangelicals nationwide…

With his taste for vintage baseball caps and omnipresence on Facebook and iTunes, Driscoll, who is 38, is on the cutting edge of American pop culture. Yet his message seems radically unfashionable, even un-American: you are not captain of your soul or master of your fate but a depraved worm whose hard work and good deeds will get you nowhere, because God marked you for heaven or condemned you to hell before the beginning of time. Yet a significant number of young people in Seattle — and nationwide — say this is exactly what they want to hear. Calvinism has somehow become cool, and just as startling, this generally bookish creed has fused with a macho ethos.

Watch as much of this video as you can stand, just to get the drift. Then hit the “stop” icon and never give this guy one more second out of your life. That goes for every one of his friends and followers, too.

Incoming Obama Press Secretary Says Obama Plans to Dump Don’t-Ask-Don’t-Tell

Is it me or does Robert Gibbs just seem really nice? And doesn’t it sound like he says, “the dumbass don’t tell” policy? If so, right on, brother!

“Open for Questions” is a feature at Change.gov where people can submit questions directly to Pres.-Elect Obama. This is the second time such questions have been addressed.

During this second round, we decided to leave the voting open significantly longer, but even with that extra time we were surprised to see the final totals: 103,512 people submitted 76,031 questions and cast 4,713,083 votes. We can now be confident that the success of the first round was not just about a new trick, but just a hint of the willingness of the public to permanently change the way they interact with their government. There’s plenty of room to grow.

For this round we refined the process to make it more user-friendly, and broke out the questions into categories. We think this made for a more interesting experience, and ensured that a broader array of questions could get exposure. But we also wanted to try a new way of responding to the questions, so this time instead of text answers, we asked incoming White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs to sit down with us. Since there were so many popular questions in so many categories, we tried to pull out some of them that had been addressed previously by the President-elect or Vice President-elect in order to focus the video portion on questions that haven’t been as specifically addressed during the Transition.

The complete five-minute video follows.

Klan Hoods Redux: Prop 8’ers Sue to Make Anti-Gay Donations Secret

The reason Klansmen wore hoods back in the Jim Crow era had little to do with hiding their faces from those whom they were out to torment, as we might suppose today. African-Americans had virtually no legal standing as witnesses against them. The hoods were mainly meant to instill fear in their victims, but they also concealed the Klansmen’s identities from their white peers, most of whom supported segregation but did not countenance church bombings, lynchings and the Klan’s other terror tactics.

This lawsuit is a tacit admission that the anti-gay cause is so shameful that its supporters need to hide their skullduggery in the shadows

In a move that is shockingly reminiscent of Klansmen donning their white hoods, activists behind last year’s anti-gay Proposition 8 campaign are suing to overturn California campaign finance laws that require making public the names of donors to political causes. The objective of these professional hate-group organizers is to enable their donors to conceal their bigotry from colleagues and neighbors who don’t share their obsessive hatred of gays:

[Anti-gay activists] claimed that donors to Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage in California after one of the most heated campaigns in recent memory, have been the victim of threats and harassment because of their support for ending same-sex marriage was made public.

“This harassment is made possible because of California’s unconstitutional campaign finance disclosure rules as applied to ballot measure committees where even donors of as little as $100 must have their names, home addresses and employers listed on public documents,” Ron Prentice, head of the Protect Marriage Coalition, said in a statement.

Leaving aside the absurdity of folks who last year donated $40 million to force the repeal of the civil rights of millions of Californians whining now about “harassment,” it’s passing strange that people who say their opposition to gay civil rights is based on moral imperatives and even the Bible would tacitly admit, via this lawsuit, that their cause is so shameful that they must change the law so they can do their skullduggery in secret.

Anti-gay activists should take note that Klansmen today no longer hide their racism under bedsheets. They proudly call themselves “white separatists,” and some, like David Duke, even appear on television wearing business suits. It’s puzzling why homophobes don’t feel a similar sort of pride. If they’re certain God is on their side, why does it matter if their neighbors and colleagues shun them because of their beliefs?

On the other hand, maybe the unintentional admission of shame underlying this lawsuit can be taken as a hopeful sign that even they recognize that their bigotry is wrong.

Bushes Bump Obamas at Blair House So Former Aussie PM Can Stay Overnight

Rachel Maddow has been all over this story (see video above), which is being referred to as Bush’s “final insult.” Let’s hope so:

The veil is lifted. We now know who is booked at Blair House, kicking President-elect Barack Obama and his family to the waiting list and across Lafayette Square to the Hay-Adams Hotel.

The only overnight visitor at the presidential guest manse is none other than John Howard, a former Australian prime minister and leading member of President Bush’s coalition of the willing in Iraq.

Howard and his entourage will be bunking at Blair House on Jan. 12, the night before he, former British prime minister Tony Blair and Colombian President Álvaro Uribe are to be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Bush, said Sally McDonough, a spokeswoman for first lady Laura Bush.

First Lady Laura Bush also has a daytime event scheduled in the facility this week.

The Obamas needed to move into Blair House early because their daughters needed to start school on Jan. 5.

Did Jeb Pass on Senate to Run for President?

Florida’s gain, America’s loss?

That whooshing sound the rest of the country is hearing is the collective sigh of relief from Florida, upon receiving the joyous news that Jeb Bush will not be running for the Senate in 2010.

According to self-proclaimed insiders, Jeb did a mental calculus and decided not to try to succeed one-term Sen. Mel Martinez because a) his family needs him too much, b) he enjoys being the decider, not a team player, and c) he’s making crazy money in the private sector.

A Jeb/Palin ticket in 2012 is every Republicans’ wet dream.

The mere idea that Jeb might throw his hat in the ring “froze the field” on both sides, according to former House Speaker Marco Rubio, who was and is thinking of vying for the office himself.

Such speculation also fueled a round of Jeb-Love, starting with the arrogant asshole’s father, George H.W., who thinks his son is suited to the family calling. No, I’m not talking about screwing things up, I’m talking about the Bushes’ other calling — being president.

Why everyone thinks Jeb is the smart one or the capable one is beyond me. Let’s take a look at Jeb’s illustrious life.

  • Family: Wife Columba was fined by U.S. Customs when she attempted to smuggle $19,000 in clothing and jewelry purchased in Paris; daughter Noelle was arrested for forging prescriptions for Xanax and while serving court-appointed rehab was discovered with cocaine; son George P. broke into his ex-girlfriend’s house in the wee hours and after arguing with her father (who called police), returned 20 minutes later and tore doughnuts in their front lawn with his Ford Explorer; and son Jeb Jr. and an unknown female were discovered by police in the parking lot of a Tallahassee mall having sex in the back seat of his Jeep Cherokee. Like former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, Junior had removed his pants but continued to wear his socks.

Quote du Jour

Sure, this sucks, but if it wasn’t for what we did it would suck worse.

— Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA), quoted in the New Yorker, on the possibility of a global economic collapse if Congress didn’t pass a bank bailout bill last year.

Author of Anti-Gay Defense of Marriage Act Now Says It Should Be Repealed

In an op-ed in today’s Los Angeles Times, Bob Barr, the author of the anti-gay Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in 1996, recants his support of the law, which prevents gay marriages from being recognized across state lines.

The public was first introduced to Bob Barr in 1994, when he came to Congress as one of the freshmen class of snarling Gingrichite House Republicans. It was Barr who first submitted a bill of impeachment against Pres. Clinton, well before Clinton had lied in a civil-lawsuit deposition about his affair with Monica Lewinsky. He advocates repealing DOMA now, in part because in the intervening years he has become a civil liberties-loving libertarian, who was, in fact, the Libertarian Party’s presidential candiate last year. Here’s Barr’s explanation of his change in heart:

I’ve wrestled with this issue for the last several years and come to the conclusion that DOMA is not working out as planned. In testifying before Congress against a federal marriage amendment, and more recently while making my case to skeptical Libertarians as to why I was worthy of their support as their party’s presidential nominee, I have concluded that DOMA is neither meeting the principles of federalism it was supposed to, nor is its impact limited to federal law.

In effect, DOMA’s language reflects one-way federalism: It protects only those states that don’t want to accept a same-sex marriage granted by another state. Moreover, the heterosexual definition of marriage for purposes of federal laws — including, immigration, Social Security survivor rights and veteran’s benefits — has become a de facto club used to limit, if not thwart, the ability of a state to choose to recognize same-sex unions.

Even more so now than in 1996, I believe we need to reduce federal power over the lives of the citizenry and over the prerogatives of the states. It truly is time to get the federal government out of the marriage business. In law and policy, such decisions should be left to the people themselves.

What Barr doesn’t mention in the op-ed piece is the toxic levels of political hypocrisy that tainted the passage of DOMA. First of all, there were no high-minded principles behind it. DOMA was sent up by the Republicans as a wedge issue between Pres. Clinton and his gay supporters in the 1996 presidential campaign, which was entering its final heat when the bill passed and Clinton signed it in late September. Yes, it tossed red meat to the gay-hating GOP base, but any pleasure it gave them or damage it might do to the lives of gay people was just a lagniappe for its framers. As a political tool, however, DOMA was a failure, since most gay people saw through it and voted for Clinton, who won reelection handily that November.

Secondly, the four men who pushed DOMA into law all were marriage-abusers. Barr was in his third marriage at the time, and has been accused by his second wife of cheating on her with the woman who became his third wife. Sen Bob. Dole, who shepherded the bill through the Senate before he resigned to focus on his presidential campaign against Clinton that year, left his first wife and child for a flight attendant. More significantly, DOMA would have gone nowhere without the blessing of then-House Speaker Net Gingrich, and, of course, it could not have become law if Pres. Clinton hadn’t signed it. We later learned that both Gingirch and Clinton were engaged in extramarital affairs at the time DOMA was being debated.
