Palin Switched Colleges Six Times in Six Years – and McCain Doesn’t Know

Sarah Heath, who later become Mrs. Todd Palin, had a hard time finding a college she liked, according to a report from the Associated Press. After high school, Sarah sampled schools like a cruise passenger samples the buffet. She went back for seconds on only one, the University of Idaho, where she finally graduated in 1987.

When the news agency contacted the schools, they were prevented by privacy laws from viewing her academic records. The most astounding finding, however, might be that no one else had asked about the alumna.

…none of the schools contacted by The Associated Press could say why she transferred. There was no indication any were contacted as part of the background investigation of Palin by presidential candidate John McCain’s campaign.

“Our office was not contacted by anyone,” said Tania Thompson, spokeswoman for the University of Idaho in Moscow.

Palin’s higher ed journey ended in Idaho, where she was born before her family moved to Alaska when she was a few months old. The rest follows.

  • University of Hawaii at Hilo in 1982. Left after a few weeks “because of the constant rain.”
  • Hawaii Pacific University in Honolulu, a private, nonsectarian school. Attended as a freshman in the fall of 1982 in the business administration program.
  • North Idaho College, a two-year school in Coeur d’Alene. Stayed two semesters, in spring 1983 and fall 1983, as a general studies major.
  • University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho from fall 1984 to spring 1985.
  • Matanuska-Susitna College in Palmer, Alaska in fall 1985.
  • University of Idaho in spring 1986, fall 1986 and spring 1987, when she graduated with a degree in journalism.

At none of the schools did anyone specifically remember Sarah Heath — no professors, no former classmates. She wasn’t listed as a member of any club or organization, nor was the journalism major on the staff of the college newspaper or campus television station.

There’s something odd about Sarah Palin and I suspect that before it’s all over, we will be able to put our fingers on it. In the meantime, we’ll just keep peeling that onion.

Viguerie: ‘Palin the Next Reagan’

richard_viguerie.jpg
In another sign that right-wing nut-job Richard Viguerie has gone completely off the rails, his latest e-mail goes beyond even his usual bombast and veers into the realm of the insane:

With her acceptance speech, “Now we know why liberal Democrats hate and fear Sarah Palin,” Richard A. Viguerie said.

“A week ago, conservatives and most Republicans were down-in-the-dumps, listless, unengaged. That lack of enthusiasm is a thing of the past. Tonight, thanks to Senator McCain and Governor Palin, conservatives and Republicans are fired up as they have not been since Ronald Reagan was president,” he said.

“Sarah Palin is the next Ronald Reagan,” Viguerie said.

“In less than a week, Governor Sarah has captured the heart and soul of this convention, the Republican Party, and the conservative movement. She brings together social conservatives, and economic conservatives and libertarians, and people who are fed up with the Culture of Corruption that infests our nation’s politics,” he said.

“From this moment forward, there’s no limit on where Sarah Palin might go,” Viguerie concluded.

How about back to Alaska ….

ABC: Palin’s Speech Full of Lies and Distortions

Shame on you, Sarah

ABC did a great job of researching some of the claims made in Sarah Palin’s speech at the Republican convention. The speech was composed by a Bush speech writer, which would explain why I was unable to listen to it. It also explains why it was so untruthy.

PALIN: “[Obama] is a man who can give an entire speech about the wars America is fighting, and never use the word ‘victory’ except when he’s talking about his own campaign.”

FACT: On July 15, in a speech in Washington, D.C., Obama twice used the word “victory” in reference to Iraq.

Palin hired a former chief of staff for Sen. Ted Stevens to lobby Congress for earmarks. Wasilla, population 10,000, received $27 million in federal money, about as much as Boise, Idaho, population 200,000

“In fact,” he said, “true success in Iraq — victory in Iraq — will not take place in a surrender ceremony where an enemy lays down their arms. . . I want Iraqis to take responsibility for their own future, and to reach the political accommodation necessary for long-term stability. That’s victory. That’s success. That’s what’s best for Iraq, that’s what’s best for America, and that’s why I will end this war as President. A week later in Berlin, Germany on July 23, Obama used the word “victory” three times to describe Allied successes during World War II. And in a June speech about the prospect of universal healthcare, he said Sen. Hillary Clinton “will be central to that victory.”

PALIN: “There is much to like and admire about our opponent. But listening to him speak, it’s easy to forget that this is a man who has authored two memoirs but not a single major law or reform — not even in the state senate.”

FACT: The meaning of “major” is open to debate, but Obama worked with Republicans, including Sen. Richard Luger of Indiana, to pass legislation that would expand efforts to intercept illegal shipments of weapons of mass destruction and to destroy conventional weapons stockpiles. While a state senator in Illinois, he sponsored two contentious bills, one that studied racial profiling by police and another that ordered interrogations in potential death penalty cases to be recorded.

Palin’s Sad, Brutal Campaign to Tame Alaska

Palin’s idea of sport

In her 20 months as governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin has worked hard to turn it from America’s last great wild place into strip mall sprawl suburbia, like the lower 48. A key component of her effort is to get rid of predators, wolves in particular.

Palin offered a bounty for anyone engaging in aerial hunts of wolves, paying $150 for each left foreleg brought in. The Defenders of Wildlife sued to end this brutal killing, which is the opposite of sportsmanlike and which was outlawed by Congress 30 years ago. Wolves are either shot from the air or run down with airplanes until they are exhausted and then shot point blank on the ground.

“The Governor is overstepping her legal authority by offering cash payments for each wolf killed by aerial gunners,” stated Tom Banks, Defenders of Wildlife’s Alaska Associate. “That’s a bounty by anyone’s standards regardless of what they call it.”

Palin offered a bounty for anyone engaging in aerial hunts of wolves, paying $150 for each left foreleg brought in

Hoping to boost the number of wolves killed this year by permitees, Palin announced the state would pay $150 for each kill. According to an Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) news release, the bounty was instituted to “motivate permittees to redouble their efforts and to help offset the high cost of aviation fuel, ADF&G will offer cash payments to those who return biological specimens to the department… Permittees will be paid $150 when they bring in the left forelegs of wolves taken from any of several designated control areas.”

Healthy ecosystems need predators. Without them, varmit populations — rodents, usually — explode. Poison is commonly then employed to kill the varmits, taking desirable and domestic species with the rodents, sullying waterways and introducing toxins.

“Governor Palin needs to take a close look at wildlife management practice in her state and restore the use of sound science,” concludes Banks. “She said would heed the will of the public, but it’s increasingly clear she’s only listening to that segment that is willing to sacrifice Alaska’s natural heritage for the benefit of a few.”

Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.) introduced the Protect America’s Wildlife (PAW) Act to close a federal loophole that would eliminate Palin’s aerial hunting program, which has also been proposed by Dick Cheney’s friends for the Greater Yellowstone region. Go to the Defenders of Wildlife’s site to see if your representatives have cosponsored the bill, and to sign a petition demanding they do.

Quote du Jour

The speech that Governor Palin gave was well delivered, but it was written by George Bush’s speechwriter and sounds exactly like the same divisive, partisan attacks we’ve heard from George Bush for the last eight years. If Governor Palin and John McCain want to define ‘change’ as voting with George Bush 90 percent of the time, that’s their choice, but we don’t think the American people are ready to take a 10 percent chance on change.

— Bill Burton, Barack Obama campaign spokesman

Top GOP Operatives Caught on Tape Trashing Palin Pick

This may be the first time you’ve ever heard Mike Murphy and Peggy Noonan not lying — and wouldn’t you know that they only speak the truth when they think the microphone is off:
“It’s over.”
— Peggy Noonan

Chuck Todd: Mike Murphy, lots of free advice, we’ll see if Steve Schmidt and the boys were watching. We’ll find out on your blackberry. Tonight voters will get their chance to hear from Sarah Palin and she will get the chance to show voters she’s the right woman for the job Up next, one man who’s already convinced and he’ll us why Gov. Jon Huntsman. (cut away)

Peggy Noonan: Yeah.

Mike Murphy: You know, because I come out of the blue swing state governor world: Engler, Whitman, Tommy Thompson, Mitt Romney, Jeb Bush. I mean, these guys — this is how you win a Texas race, just run it up. And it’s not gonna work. And —

PN: It’s over.

MM: Still McCain can give a version of the Lieberman speech to do himself some good.

CT: I also think the Palin pick is insulting to Kay Bailey Hutchinson, too.

PN: Saw Kay this morning.

CT: Yeah, she’s never looked comfortable about this —

MM: They’re all bummed out.

CT: Yeah, I mean is she really the most qualified woman they could have turned to?

PN: The most qualified? No! I think they went for this — excuse me– political bullshit about narratives —

CT: Yeah they went to a narrative.

MM: I totally agree.

PN: Every time the Republicans do that, because that’s not where they live and it’s not what they’re good at, they blow it.

MM: You know what’s really the worst thing about it? The greatness of McCain is no cynicism, and this is cynical.

CT: This is cynical, and as you called it, gimmicky.

MM: Yeah.

Poll: Palin Not a Chick Magnet for McCain Campaign

From Political Wire:

A new survey conducted for EMILY’s List suggests Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is not helping the Republican ticket with female voters. Among all women surveyed, Obama-Biden leads McCain-Palin, 53 percent to 35 percent.

When asked how the running mates were picked, half of those surveyed said Obama chose Biden based on his experience, while 29 percent said he was chosen for political reasons. Meanwhile, 20 percent said McCain chose Palin for experience and 59% said his pick was for political purposes.

Key finding: A 55 percent majority of women voters who backed Sen. Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primary say that Palin’s inclusion on the ticket makes them less likely to vote for McCain; just 9 percent say her presence on the ticket makes them more likely to support McCain.
