Gay Basher Upset About Mormon Bashing

“I am appalled at the level of Mormon-bashing that went on during the Proposition 8 campaign and continues to this day,” [Jeff Flint, strategist for Yes on 8 campaign] said. “If this activity were directed against any other church, if someone put up a website that targeted Jews or Catholics in a similar fashion for the mere act of participating in a political campaign, it would be widely and rightfully condemned.”

Two things here.

One: How does it feel to be on the wrong side of “bashing” people for the first time in your life, Jeff?

Two: I think you just made the case for taking away the Mormon church’s tax-exempt status. You said the “church” participated in a “political campaign.” The church is welcome to jump into the political arena in this country, but not to remain tax-exempt while doing so.

Jeff is upset because a web site exposed the religious denomination of Mormon donors to the multi-million dollar campaign to make gay marriage illegal in California. The site’s purpose was to show that Mormons were the main bankroll behind the ballot initiative.

Why Are the Dems Still Dancing with Lieberman?

liebermanmccain.jpg
Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut needs to go. To the Republican Party. Now.

He met with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid yesterday and for some reason Reid didn’t throw him bodily from the party or take away his chairmanship of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, or at the very least paste him one in the kisser for endorsing John McCain at the Republican Convention.

First, the little weasel loses in the Democratic primary, so he flops over to run as an independent, winning to retain his Senate seat and chairmanship.

Meanwhile, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has reached out to Lieberman about joining the Republican Conference. But since the Dems haven’t gotten up the gumption to give him a swift kick in that direction, Lieberman is still bargaining with Democratic leaders to keep his chairmanship.

Lieberman should be toast, not the prom queen everybody wants to date

And make no mistake, as usual with Lieberman, it’s not about party or personal loyalty, it’s all about Lieberman. Lieberman’s just out to negotiate the best deal for Lieberman — on Liebermanian terms, of course:

A Republican Senate aide said Friday morning that there was little McConnell could offer in terms of high-ranking committee slots, which is why Lieberman is resisting overtures from the Republican side.

Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Lieberman met Thursday, yet Reid is waffling over whether to revoke Lieberman’s chairmanship of the Homeland Security Committee and may instead hold a secret vote among Democratic members on whether to kick Lieberman out of the caucus.

Senate aides from both parties caution that Lieberman’s state is still truly up in the air and Reid could still craft a scenario where Lieberman keeps his chairmanship.

Yeah, and if you pull on my finger, monkeys will fly out of my butt.

Lieberman should be toast, not the prom queen everybody wants to date. If the Republicans want him for a mascot, the Democratic Party should leave him twisting in the wind. Trouble is, here just a few days after the election, the majority is not acting like a majority and the minority is still acting like the majority.

Mormons Have Done It Now

Mormons.

Any reader of this news and opinion web site knows mine on this particular subject (can you say, “cult?”) but it would appear that with the successful passage of California’s anti gay marriage initiative, some lines were crossed.

Big Mormon bucks paid for the campaign to pass Proposition 8
. Now it’s time to examine the source and handling of the scratch the Mormon church is flush with.

StopAllMonsters is calling for a boycott of the Huntington Hotel group.

…first up on the Mormon boycott list is Brent Andrus. Brent runs a few hotels, called the Courtyard Marriott, Fairfield Inn Marriott, Residence Inn Marriott and the Spring Hill Suites Marriott.

Please do not do business with these 14 hotels.

And why is the so-called church allowed to collect and spend money in campaigns and still keep its tax-exempt status? Because we haven’t demanded otherwise.

lds501(c)3 can help you file a complaint with the IRS seeking to revoke the church’s exemption. The site’s larger goal is to clarify the tax-exempt status of any church that contributes substantial funds in the political arena.

Borowitz Scoop: Palin to be Ambassador to Africa

Favorite satirist Andy Borowitz is reporting a new role for Sarah Palin: ambassador to the country of Africa.

Sarah Palin of Alaska has reached out to President-elect Obama’s transition team to indicate her interest in being named “ambassador to the nation of Africa,” the governor confirmed today.

Gov. Palin said that although she had planned to continue in her position in Anchorage, she was willing to leave the governorship “because Africa is just such a darned important country.”

She added that she had received phone calls encouraging her to vie for the post, including one from French president Nicholas Sarkozy.

New Parents Going Big for Obama Namesakes

Barack Hussein Obama Anderson-Wilson?

With all the adoration and praise being heaped on Barack Obama as both a person and a symbol, it had to happen. People across the country are bestowing Obama-related names on their babies. Among them:

  • Sanjae Obama Fisher, born in Hollywood, Fla.
  • Benjamin Barack Kimbrough, born in Little Rock
  • Sasha Malia Ann Taylor, born in Baltimore

One of the mothers followed election results during her 14-hour labor, and another watched the victory speech during her shorter one.

No one seems to have yet named a baby Hussein in Obama’s honor, despite the fact that it’s such a nice name. Sources say it means “good,” or alternately, “small, handsome one.”

In similar news, the wonderful web site A.Word.A.Day recently posted a list of words that sound campaign related.

  • obambulate, a verb meaning to walk about, and using the same root as ambulance and preamble. Oddly, as one reader pointed out, this is also what John McCain did during the town hall style debate
  • bidentate, an adjective meaning having two teeth or toothlike parts from the Latin bi- (two) + dens (tooth)
  • palinode, a noun referring to a poem in which the writer retracts something said in a previous poem. Again, ironically, McCain might have wished many times to retract one or more of his choices
  • meeken (kind of sounds like McCain), a verb meaning to become meek or submissive, from the same Old Norse word
  • barrack, a verb meamnig to shout in support or against, from the Northern Irish word for bragging; also a noun referring to a building used to house soldiers, from the French baraque or Italian baracca
