Photo Op: Mom-Jeans Wearing Rick Perry in Helicopter Gunship Hunting Refugee Children

This photo is making the rounds but I’ve had trouble tracking down the source. It appears to show Texas Republican Gov. Rick Perry in a helicopter gunship leaning on a powerful-looking weapon aimed at the ground. He is scanning the field below presumably, given recent headlines, seeking to target and shoot refugee children who are attempting to cross the U.S. border from Mexico. A commenter somewhere on Facebook pointed out that the gun Perry is leaning on is not loaded, but I can’t verify that either.

But check out how he’s dressed and posed for the photo op. He is shown in profile — jaw clenched, with his baseball cap on backwards and his “I’m smart” glasses removed — wearing a flight jacket with mom jeans. His right hand is gripping the weapons but his left hand is carefully draped over the gun to display his Aggie ring (shown in photo to the right).

Tell Rick that boots can be purchased with normal heels. I lament the fact that our governor could now pass for a West Coast metrosexual and has embarrassed us all with his sartorial change of direction.

Rick Perry’s remarks are incredibly condescending and insulting to women. This is exactly why the vast majority of Texans believe that politicians shouldn’t be involved in a woman’s personal health care decisions. Women are perfectly capable of deciding whether to choose adoption, end a pregnancy, or raise a child, and they don’t need Rick Perry’s help making that decision.

Wendy Davis, whose 11-hour speech on the floor of the legislature postponed a vote on an anti-abortion bill. Perry told Right to Life members at a national conference, “I’m all about honest, open debate…But what we witnessed Tuesday was nothing more than the hijacking of the Democratic process.” Davis spoke on topic, without food or water, in pink running shoes, and was not allowed to touch furniture during the vigil.

The loss of life in West, Texas, was tragic, but the tragedy itself is an illustration of the downside of the Republicans’ unstoppable zeal for deregulating industry at any cost. The cost in this case included the lives of 14 people who were killed when a fertilizer plant exploded on April 17.

In the wake of the blast, however, Gov. Rick Perry, who loves to brag about “poaching” businesses from California, where regulations are enforced, in part because the environment is fragile, deftly sidestepped accountability in the media, at least, by feigning outrage over a cartoon in the Sacramento Bee that shows depicted him saying, “Business is BOOMING in Texas,” in one frame and a giant explosion in the next. Perry has created quite a kerfuffle in the media by demanding an apology from cartoonist Jack Ohman.
