Survey: Fox News Is Most Trusted, Least Trusted

In what can only be taken as a sign of these sorry times, a recent survey by Sacred Heart University found that Fox News was simultaneously the most trusted and the least trusted news organization in America.

When researchers asked which national television news organization respondents trusted most for accurate reporting, Fox News was named by 30 percent of all respondents — up from 19.5 percent in 2003 and 27 percent in 2007.

The news organizations ranked as most trusted for accurate reporting included Fox News (30 percent), CNN (19.5 percent), NBC News (7.5 percent) and ABC News (7.5 percent). The least-trusted organizations were Fox News (26.2 percent), followed by NBC News (9.9 percent), MSNBC (9.4 percent), CNN (8.5 percent), CBS News (5.3 percent) and ABC News (3.7 percent)

It makes one wonder who these respondents were and what they’d been smoking:

Researchers asked respondents for their perceptions of political leanings of various news sources. The Daily Show/Colbert Report was viewed, by a six-to-one margin, as mostly or somewhat liberal over mostly or somewhat conservative. By nearly five-to-one margins, respondents see “news media journalists and broadcasters,” the New York Times and MSNBC as mostly or somewhat liberal over those that see them as mostly or somewhat conservative.

Fox News is viewed as mostly or somewhat conservative over mostly or somewhat liberal by a four-to-one margin. And, by approximately three-to-one margins, CNN and USA Today are viewed as mostly or somewhat liberal over mostly or somewhat conservative. The Wall Street Journal is viewed as more conservative by a two-to-one margin while National Public Radio is viewed as more liberal by the same margin

I mean could these people have been sober if 15 percent of them thought The Daily Show and Stephen Colbert were “somewhat conservative” and 25 percent thought Fox News is “somewhat liberal?”

Oh, wait! Now I remember — we all live in an idiocracy ….

Thanks for Lunch, Drew Carey

photo-drprew-caprey-portOne of the perks of living in Los Angeles is that famous people whom you have never met will occasionally pick up your tab for your lunch. No kidding. It happens all the time.

Okay, not all the time. But it happened to me last Thursday when Drew Carey bought lunch for me and Judy Rozzelle, my friend and the author of Shuffletown USA, at Swingers, a diner on Beverly Blvd., in the Fairfax District. It was a special occasion for us because it was the first day Judy was able to drive after having surgery six weeks earlier. She’d had a birdcage contraption installed around her spine in order to alleviate what we call in the South, “miseries” in her back.

Swingers is a great place for lunch, especially if you like classic 90s’ punk pumped at “11.” The style is Googie diner-retro. The vibe is knowingly tragically hip. The servers are all beautiful and smarter than you. They dress like they came straight to work from clubbing all night. Nearly everyone has a tattoo, a piercing or both.

Given all that, the food is great and surprising healthy. It’s vegan-friendly. You can order a quinoa salad on the side, for example.

I missed seeing our host even though he was standing right behind me at the cash register. I mean, I was aware there was someone behind me, but I was mildly desperately in need of quarters for the parking meter. We’d only found a dime or two in the car, which had bought us about eight minutes. The meter, which was a block away in front of the DWR at Sweetzer, was ticking away and 40 bucks in parking fines were at stake.

Problem was the cash register was broken and couldn’t be opened. A repairman fiddled with it as three of us hovered — the restaurant manager, the big guy behind me later identified as Drew Carey and me.

When I glanced at Judy, who was already seated at our table about five feet from the cash register, she signaled — using the hand signals every Angeleno knows to mean “there’s a celebrity standing right behind you,” but I was distracted and oblivious to such trivialities. Later she told me Drew was wearing cargo shorts and purple crocs.

The cash drawer was opened finally, and I hustled out to the meter and bought us an hour. We had a nice lunch, talked about writing and discussed our stop earlier at Tree People up on the ridge at Mulholland and Coldwater, where Judy was considering volunteering. (Looks like she’s going to work with parrots in the Valley instead.)

When it was time to go, the waitress told us that Drew Carey had put out a Tweet earlier in the day announcing that he was picking up the tab for lunch for the house at Swingers until 2 p.m. We all know Drew Carey, of course, from his eponymous 1990s’ sitcom and as the current host of “The Price Is Right.” He’s also a political oddball — a libertarian in a town that is synonymous with “liberal,” but we won’t hold that against him, especially while he’s buying us lunch.

Naturally, the question arose: why was Drew Carey buying us lunch? Our server did not know, but she said that there was a precedent. Carey had done the same thing during the writer’s strike.

Later, I check the Intertubes to see if I could find a motive for Carey’s generosity. All I found was this on his Twitter page:

I’m at Swinger’s at 8020 Beverly Blvd in LA. Anybody who gets here by 2pm and is prepared to leave a good tip, your meal is on me.

No particular cause other than a generous gesture in tough times. (And, yes, we left a bodacious tip.)

So, thanks, Drew Carey. We had a lovely day on Thursday, and lunch was terrific.

And to any other film or TV stars, recording artists, high-profile entertainment journalists — and, yes, even reality show stars — for the record, I’ll be having lunch at Hugo’s in West Hollywood on Wednesday at noon. Straight up.

Right Wing Exaggerations of 9/12 Crowd Size Too Extreme Even for Fox News

Glenn Beck’s anti-Obama 9/12 march in Washington is over, but the fakery continues. During the event, an executive for Freedomworks, the DC-based lobbying firm headed by former GOP House leader Dick Armey that was hired to astroturf the event, took to the stage and, citing ABC News as his source, flatly lied about the crowd size, saying it was about 25 times the D.C. Fire Department’s estimates.

The crowd size of Saturday’s Tea Bagger march probably did beat a long-standing record, however. It was likely the biggest whites-only rally in the capitol since 1925, when 35,000 people marched in support of the Ku Klux Klan.

Then, in a move that is atypical of a “liberal media” outlet, ABC struck back:

Conservative activists … erroneously attributed reports on the size of the crowds to ABC News.

Matt Kibbe, president of FreedomWorks, the group that organized the event, said on stage at the rally that ABC News was reporting that 1 million to 1.5 million people were in attendance.

At no time did ABC News, or its affiliates, report a number anywhere near as large. ABCNews.com reported an approximate figure of 60,000 to 70,000 protesters, attributed to the Washington, D.C., fire department. In its reports, ABC News Radio described the crowd as “tens of thousands.”

Brendan Steinhauser, spokesman for FreedomWorks, said he did not know why Kibbe cited ABC News as a source.

As a result of Kibbe’s erroneous attribution, several bloggers and commenters repeated the misinformation.

It goes without saying — or at least ABC assumes so — that the “bloggers and commenters” repeating Kibbe’s lie were right-wingers. Their ring leader appears to have been Michelle Malkin, who was caught, as GOP Facebook blogger Sarah Palin would say, “makin’ stuff up“:

Malkin plucked out of thin air the bogus claim that ABC News reported the 9/12 protest crowd was 2 million strong. False. Nobody at ABC News ever made that claim, and no sane observer of the D.C. event today would claim with a straight face that somehow 2 million people overtook the nation’s capitol.

It’s pure fantasy.

But did that stop anybody on the right from repeating the hollow claim? Please. Did Newsbusters link to Malkin’s phony claim? Check. Wizbang. Check. Gay Patriot? Check. Examiner.com? Check. Right Pundits? Check.

…Malkin should have just claimed 12 million protesters showed up. Because every one of her willingly gullible followers would have linked to her anyway.

Surprisingly, however, Malkin’s lie proved to be more than Fox News, the leading right-wing propaganda outlet, felt it could get away with. Fox reported that “tens of thousands of protesters” attended the march.

But even if there were 100,000 Tea Baggers at the anti-Obama rally, that was still be less than half the 250,000 at the march where Martin Luther King gave his “I Have a Dream” speech and one-fifth the size of both the anti-Vietnam War march 1971 and the gay rights march in 1987. If there’d been 100,000 people at Beck’s march, it would still be dwarfed by the 1.8 million who attended the president’s inauguration in January.

But at 60,000 or so, the crowd size of Saturday’s Tea Bagger march probably did beat one long-standing record in the capitol, however. It was likely the biggest whites-only rally in the district since 1925, when 35,000 people marched in support of the Ku Klux Klan.

Comparison of Washington Crowd Sizes

By comparison, here are crowd sizes in Washington for previous marches as well as this year’s presidential inauguration:

Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” march Aug. 28, 1963 250,000
Anti-Vietnam War march Oct. 15, 1969 200,000
Anti-Vietnam War march Nov. 15, 1969 600,000
Anti-Vietnam War march April 21, 1971 500,000
Pro Gay Rights march Oct. 11, 1987 500,000
Million Man march Oct. 16, 1995 400,000
Inauguration of Pres. Obama Jan. 21, 2009 1,800,000
Glenn Beck’s anti-Obama 9/12 march Sept. 12, 2009 60,000

Beck Seeking to Quash ‘Parody’ Web Site

Lawyers for Glenn Beck, who is a Mormon and a wingnut TV blatherer, are seeking to shut down the Web site glennbeckrapedandmurderedayounggirlin1990.com on grounds the site is defamatory and libelous. This from the guy who characterized President Obama as a racist.

Be that as it may, Ars Technica has an insightful article into the controversy over the site and the origins of the allegation that Glenn Beck raped and murdered a young girl in 1990. Not that we are making that allegation here, we’re just asking why Beck has had no comment on the allegation. Reporter Nate Anderson traced the origin of the allegation:

The controversy started a week ago in the Fark forums, where someone picked up on an old Gilbert Gottfried roast of the “comedian” (scare quotes fully intended) Bob Saget. During the roast, Gottfried repeatedly said (watch the video) that Saget had “not raped and killed a girl in 1990.” The Fark forums took the joke about the power of insinuation and applied it to right-wing talk show host Glenn “Obama is a racist” Beck.

One of the Fark readers then took the forum meme to the next level, registering a domain name and launching a web site in order to make a point about talking head TV demagoguery. “Why won’t Glenn Beck deny these allegations?” asks the site. “We’re not accusing Glenn Beck of raping and murdering a young girl in 1990—in fact, we think he didn’t! But we can’t help but wonder, since he has failed to deny these horrible allegations. Why won’t he deny that he raped and killed a young girl in 1990?” At the very bottom of the page was a small text disclaimer saying that the site was satirical.

I spoke to the anonymous owner of the site, who tells Ars that launching it “just felt right”—it flipped the “birther” non-falsifiable conspiracy theories about Obama’s birth and citizenship around and applied the same tactics to one of the biggest talking heads (no pun intended?) on cable news. It’s just “using Beck’s tactics against him” and is a small way of “directing all this frustration” with Beck and others into action.

Hey, I’m all for flipping the birther movement on its pea-brained head, but unfortunately for the anonymous owner of the site, Glenn Beck is a powerful, wealthy person who unfortunately probably has the law on his side in this instance.

Anderson notes in the article that Beck currently is seeking trademark protection for his name:

Beck’s name is in the process of being trademarked in the US. While most of the “goods and services” associated with the name are obvious ones like DVDs and books containing Beck’s special brand of commentary, the mark is also reserved for use on “cups, ice buckets, mugs, non-metal piggy banks, ceramic and porcelain holiday ornaments.” The thought of such an ornament hanging on a Christmas tree …

Happy Xmas!

Ad Boycott – And Audience Share – Grow in Wake of Glenn Beck’s Racist Smear of President

On Wednesday, 11 more companies — including Mercedes-Benz, Capital One, HSBC and Discover — announced they were joining the boycott of Glenn Beck’s show on the Fox channel.

This brings the number of companies in the ad ban to nearly 60, according to James Rucker, executive director of ColorOfChange.org, the organization behind the sponsor protest. The list includes Applebee’s, Bank of America, Bell & Howell, Best Buy, CVS, DirecTv, General Mills, GMAC Financial Services, Kraft, Procter & Gamble, Regions Financial Corporation, SAM (Store and Move), Travelers Insurance, Travelocity, Vonage and Wal-Mart.

The controversy began in July, when Beck appeared on Fox’s morning bobblehead show and said this:

Olbermann Nails Glenn Beck for Misspelling O.L.I.G.A.R.C.H.

Hilarious and yet deeply horrifying. Glenn Beck makes a spectacular spelling error while using a chalk board to explain to his feeble-minded viewers that Obama and liberals have a secret plan to overturn the republic and install an oligarchy in its place. In his demonstration, Beck misspells “oligarch” by leaving out the letter “c.”

Beck is projecting, of course. Oligarchies are by definition right-wing autocracies in which a tiny elite cadre imposes authoritarian control on a small middle class and a vast impoverished underclass. Examples include the Mexican government today, the Confederate States of America during the (first) Civil War and imperial Rome.

It’s horrifying that Beck has any credibility at all, and that what credibility he does have is among misguided Tea Baggers, Birthers and Deathers who have been duped into arming themselves for a second Civil War — to water the tree of liberty with blood — for no other reason than to protect the trillions in profits of health-insurance megacorps.

Thanks to FWA, our man in Savannah, for the tip.

Tewspaper Is Not the Future of Newspapers, Right?

newspapers

So there’s this new online newspaper that has no reporters, no editors, no fact-checkers and no advertising salespeople. Local versions of it are available in New York, Chicago, Baltimore, Dallas and Los Angeles. It sends specially programmed robots out over Twitter to glean pertinent tweets and posts them automatically with the originally links intact.

It apparently has at least one human staff member, a guy named Jared to whom you are supposed to direct any “feedback” you’d like to share.

It’s called Tewspaper.

So this is it — the end of the newspaper as we know it, right? Well, not exactly.

See, despite the fact that it uses robots instead of reporters, there’s a good reason why it exists in those five cities — they all have robust newspapers that have embraced the online distribution system pretty aggressively, creating a ready inventory of localized content on Twitter. The upshot is, without real newspaper reporters posting tweets about their stories along with links to the online versions, Tewspaper could not exist.

So instead of replacing newspapers, Tewspaper serves as a kind of RSS feed of capsule summaries (less than 140 characters) of newspaper content. Indeed, it’s a shame the newwspapers didn’t think of it first — they might have been able to monetize the linkbacks. Oh, well ….

Now You Can Sleep with Marilyn Monroe – Forever

The crypt above the tomb of Marilyn Monroe was put up for sale on eBay last week. Bidding started at $500,000 and had risen to $4.5 million by Tuesday.

If you happen to have an extra $5 million or so lying around, it might not be too late. You could spend eternity resting on top of the movie goddess.

Bidding Starts for Nude Video Session with Levi Johnston

On Monday, we noted that Levi Johnston, the grandbaby-daddy of Facebook blogger Sarah Palin, told an interviewer that he would be open to posing nude but “it depends on the money, man … It’s gotta be right for that.”

Well, the first publicly announced offer is in, and, while it sounds intriguing, it’s probably an on-camera sex act too far for Levi. And even if not, his advisers will likely suggest he reject it or at least encourage the bidders to sharpen their pencil quite a bit.

The offer comes from Bait & Tackle, a wryly named gay porn company in Las Vegas that produces the website StraightCollegeMen.com. They have taken the peremptory step of launching a new site called LeviNaked.com (SFW), where they posted their offer to Johnston in an open letter:
