Most Voters Willing to Pay to Combat Climate Change

Of likely U.S. voters say they are not willing to pay anything more in higher taxes and utility costs annually to generate cleaner energy and fight global warming, according to a Rasmussen telephone survey. But that’s down from 48% last August and the lowest level measured since January 2013. However, 56% are willing to pay, with 24% willing to spend $100 more per year, unchanged from earlier surveys, and 26% are ready to spend $300 or more a year, with 6% who are willing to spend at least $1,000 more annually.

Hispanics More Concerned About Climate Change

Of Hispanic respondents rated global warming as extremely or very important to them personally, compared with 37 percent of whites, according to a Stanford University poll. Sixty-seven percent of Hispanics said they would be hurt personally to a significant degree if nothing was done to reduce global warming, compared with half of whites. And 63 percent of Hispanics said the federal government should act broadly to address global warming, compared with 49 percent of whites.

For now, ‘I’m not a scientist’ is what one party adviser calls ‘a temporary Band-Aid’ — a way to avoid being called a climate change denier but also to sidestep a dilemma. The reality of campaigning is that a politician who acknowledges that burning coal and oil contributes to global warming must offer a solution, which most policy experts say should be taxing or regulating carbon pollution and increasing government spending on alternative energy. But those ideas are anathema to influential conservative donors like the billionaire brothers Charles and David Koch and the advocacy group they support, Americans for Prosperity.

As many as 400,000 people attended this rally yesterday, but it is largely being ignored by both legit cable channels — maybe the rally’s organizers should have beaten their spouses or chopped off someone’s head. So far today, MSNBC has run just one, short end-of-the-hour segment, and it’s unclear whether CNN has done a broadcast report on it at all.
