Tampa Bay Times has some interesting insights into the relationship between presidential candidate Marco Rubio and his Miami billionaire patron Norman Braman. Recently, Braman announced he was giving Rubio $10 million to help finance his campaign.

It appears Rubio is accustomed to feeding at the Braman trough. Here are some numbers that illuminate their relationship:

  • $100,000 — Amount Braman gave to Florida International University to fund a professorship for Rubio when he left the Florida state House in 2008
  • $54,000 — Salary Jeanette Rubio was paid in 2013 for her part-time work for the Braman Family 2011 Charitable Foundation
  • $9 million — Braman Family Foundation assets in 2013 (most recent year Form 990 is available)
  • $250 — Total charitable donations the Braman Family Foundation made in 2013, to New York’s Breast Cancer Research Foundation
  • $216 — Amount Jeanette Rubio was paid per dollar of charitable spending on behalf of the Braman Foundation in 2013
  • Now that he’s moved from the five- and six-figure realm into the seven-figure arena, we’ll have to watch to see what Marco Rubio is selling and what Norman “Sugar Daddy” Braman is buying.

UPDATE: As more people dig into Marco Rubio’s finances, some tendencies are coming to light that could prove to be impediments in his bid for the presidency.

    From the Washington Post:

    Marco Rubio’s 2014 earnings:

    • $174,000 as a U.S. senator
    • $52,000 from book royalties and a university teaching position
    • $5,000 from rental property.
    • Total: $231,000

Last September Rubio cashed out $68,241 worth of retirement funds. He claimed that his refrigerator had to be replaced for $3,000 (who owns a $3k fridge??) and then there was private school for his four kids that totaled $40,000.

Rubio placed 456 out of 538 in Roll Call’s rankings of Capitol Hill’s wealthiest lawmakers. Rubio was in the red, according to the 2013 data, with a net worth of negative $140,000.
