GOP VP Nominee Paul Ryan Voted in Lockstep with George Bush to Explode U.S. Debt
At a closed-door fundraiser on April 14, 2011, Pres.Obama criticized Republicans in Congress for using the budget process to “enact their political agenda under the guise of cutting spending.” He singled out Rep. Paul Ryan, chairman of the House budget committee and now Mitt Romney’s nominee for vice president, saying:
PRES. OBAMA: When Paul Ryan says his priority is to make sure, you know, he’s just being America’s accountant, trying to be responsible …This is the same guy who voted for two wars that were unpaid for, voted for the Bush tax cuts that were unpaid for, voted for the prescription drug bill that cost as much as my health care bill — but wasn’t paid for. So it’s not on the level.

Pres. Obama recently remarked that politics can sometimes seem small. A prime example of this smallness is the controversy Republicans have been stoking for three-plus years now over the disposition of a bust of Winston Churchill that was loaned to the Bush White House in 2001. The latest stoke came yesterday from the right-wing Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer, in an article titled, “Busted: Mr. Pfeiffer and the White House blog“:

MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow took WaPo to task for a story on Mitt Romney Wednesday night. And that’s putting it mildly. Rather, she channeled her inner Freddy Krueger and methodically butchered the story to shreds one line at a time. She called the piece “whitewash” and “non journalism.”

George W. Bush, the Most Unpopular President Ever, Now Also Holds Title as the Most Unpopular Living Ex-President
The fact that George W. Bush left office as the most unpopular president in the history of presidential polling explains why Mitt Romney is loathe to mention Bush, the most recent Republican president, by name. In speeches, Romney and his surrogates refer to Bush euphemistically as Pres. Obama’s “predecessor.”
A new poll from CNN/ORC finds that while Bush’s popular has risen about 10 percentage points since he left office, at 43 percent approval/54 percent disapproval, he also holds the title of most unpopular living former president.
Former Pres. Jimmy Carter, the ex-president Republicans most like to disparage, has an approval rating of 54 percent.
The Guy Whose Economic Advice We Are Least Likely to Take
This is roughly equivalent to John Edwards publishing a book on marital fidelity, or Ron Paul publishing a book on racial tolerance.
Pundit Henry Decker, in a column called, “Not A Joke: Bush To Publish Book On Economic Growth.” The book is part of an effort to rehabilitate the reputation of former Pres. George W. Bush, whose policies of mortgage and finance deregulation, and of cutting taxes at the top of the income scale while launching two wars plunged the country into recession.

Republicans have reacted to the Washington Post’s story last week that revealed that when Mitt Romney was a senior in prep school he bullied boys he perceived to be gay by claiming that the incident was just a youthful indiscretion and, besides, stories of physical abuse by boys do not always predict the character of the men they will grow up to be.
On the other hand, sometimes the stories are determinative. Take for example, this scandal from 1967 — two years after the Romney bullying episode took place — that arose after students at Yale complained that a fraternity was torturing its pledges. The frat’s president was George W. Bush, who, 40 years later, single-handedly turned the United States into a torture state:

History will likely record that one of House Speaker John Boehner’s worst mistakes was his decision to allow California Rep. Darrell Issa to head the government oversight committee. It was Chairman Issa, after all, who called an all-male panel to discuss contraceptives earlier this year. The optics of this stupid move instantly became an undeniable symbol that Republicans were engaging in a war on women.
Issa, a one-time accused car thief and arsonist, is best-known in California as the guy who funded the initial effort to recall Democratic Gov. Gray Davis, in 2003, so that Issa himself could become governor, only to break down into sobs, with local news cameras rolling, when action star Arnold Schwarzenegger stepped in and bigfooted him out of the way.
More recently, in the weeks after Boehner appointed Issa to the chairmanship, Issa created a stir by predicting that the Obama administration would become the most corrupt government in history. This week, in an interview with Bloomberg news, Issa doubled down on his prediction:
If You Liked Bush, You’ll Love Romney
A signal has apparently gone out among the Bush family and faithful: Line up behind Romney!
Recently, former Gov. Jeb Bush, former Pres. George H.W. Bush, and his wife, Barbara, publicly endorsed the Mormon. The admiration is mutual, according to Reuters, since Romney is relying on members of Pres. George W. Bush’s administration to advise him on national security and foreign policy.
If the rest of the Republican party hoped for more in the way of a candidate this year, the Bush folks couldn’t be happier.
Romney has named 24 “special advisers” in national security and foreign policy, 16 of whom served in diplomatic or political roles under Bush. They include Michael Chertoff, the former homeland security chief, and Dan Senor, who was an administration spokesman in Iraq.
On judicial issues, Romney is advised by at least three top veterans of Bush’s Justice Department.
Romney’s education advisers include Margaret Spellings, who was secretary of education under Bush and a chief advocate for No Child Left Behind….
Privately, they believe that…a Romney presidency could have a look much like Bush’s presidency.
Romney’s campaign is “a restoration of the Bush establishment,” said former Bush speechwriter Matt Lattimer, who is not supporting Romney. Bush loyalists “all want to be back in power again, and Romney’s the best bet.”
