Majority Disapproves of Trump Immigration Policies

A new Quinnipiac poll finds that American voters disapprove of the way President Trump is handling immigration, 58% to 39%. But they’re split on whether he’s a racist, 49% to 47%. Also interesting: 50% of voters say the main motive for Trump’s immigration policies is “a sincere interest in controlling our borders,” while 44% say the main motive is “racist beliefs.”

“The number of people receiving visas to move permanently to the United States is on pace to drop 12 percent in President Trump’s first two years in office,” the Washington Post reports. “Among the most affected are the Muslim-majority countries on the president’s travel ban list — Yemen, Syria, Iran, Libya and Somalia — where the number of new arrivals to the United States is heading toward an 81 percent drop by Sept. 30, the end of the second fiscal year under Trump.”

“Border agents and child welfare workers are running out of space to shelter children who have been separated from their parents at the U.S. border as part of the Trump administration’s new ‘zero tolerance’ policy,” NBC News reports. “As of Sunday, nearly 300 of the 550 children currently in custody at U.S. border stations had spent more than 72 hours there, the time limit for immigrants of any age to be held in the government’s temporary facilities. Almost half of those 300 children are younger than 12.”

“The number of migrant children held in U.S. government custody without their parents has surged 21 percent in the past month, according to the latest figures, an increase driven by the Trump administration’s ‘zero tolerance’ crackdown on families who cross the border illegally,” the Washington Post reports. “Although the government has not disclosed how many children have been separated from their parents as a result of the new measures, the Department of Health and Human Services said Tuesday that it had 10,773 migrant children in its custody, up from 8,886 on April 29. … Those shelters are at 95 percent capacity, an HHS official said Tuesday, and the agency is preparing to add potentially thousands of new bed spaces in the coming weeks.”

“Despite President Trump’s tough-on-immigration rhetoric, there have been fewer deportations in his first year as president than there were in any year of Barack Obama’s presidency,” Axios reports. “There were 177,000 fewer deportations this year than in 2009, Obama’s first year in office.”

A new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll finds 55% of respondents say they’re comfortable with the United States becoming more diverse and tolerant of different lifestyles, gender roles, languages, cultures and experiences. In addition, 64% believe immigration strengthens the country.
