The latest anti-Muslim propaganda coming from the Republican Party’s Fox network is a suggestion by the network’s resident Mormon televangelist Glenn Beck that 10 percent of Muslims worldwide are terrorists.

GLENN BECK: What is the number of Islamic terrorists? One percent? I think it’s closer to 10 percent, but the rest of the PC world will tell you ‘oh no, it’s minuscule.’ Okay, well, let’s take you at your one percent. Look at the havoc of one percent of Muslims causing on the rest of the world!

This claim is so ridiculous that it stands as a tragic indictment of our times that it even has to be addressed. But, just in case it comes up at family events over the holidays, here goes.

If you were doing this with your son, I could see how this might be fun. If you happen to have a Nazi uniform in your closet and you’re wearing it and you’re like, yes, i’m wearing my Nazi uniform around, you might question someone. But if you are part of an reenactment group and you are war gaming, I could see that as, again, not something I necessarily would participate in, but nothing wrong with it.

I have books in my library on cults, and it lists Mormonism right there with all these bizarre cults. Well, there must be a reason. I mean, here a member of a cult is one of the most powerful people in the United States. Doesn’t that alarm you? And his allegiance is to Salt Lake City. Something is up with that. Something’s weird. But nobody touches that. [Glenn Beck’s*] allegiance is to Salt Lake City. The Mormon church is rich, powerful, they do illegal things. They do secretive things. They’ve got all this money. They own American businesses. There’s weirdness going on there. Churches are not multi-millionaire organizations like the Mormon church. You know, there’s some weirdness with that, but nobody questions it, nobody asks one question to [Glenn Beck] and says, ‘Tell us about your faith. What does a Mormon believe?’ Ask him about the holy garments that he wears that protect him from evil. Isn’t that kooky? Ask him about getting his body parts anointed by oil. Isn’t that kooky? Ask him about when he goes to the temple and he gets baptized for dead people. Isn’t that kooky? Within 24 hours after the radio interview during which CNN anchor Rick Sanchez called Jon Stewart a bigot and complained that Jews run the media, CNN fired him. Contrast that with the fact that it has been 14 months since Glenn Beck called the president of the United States a racist. Nearly 300 advertisers have boycotted his show as a result, but Fox did not even consider firing him. What does that say about Fox?

Beck Lies about Slavery, Claims It Was Created by Court Orders, Government Regulation

There’s a complete transcript of the “Countdown” segment below, but here is Beck’s money quote about slavery:

BECK: It also took a long time to start slavery. It started small. And it started with seemingly innocent ideas. And then a little court order here and a court order there and a little more regulation here and a little more regulation there, and before we knew it, America had slavery. It didn’t come over in a ship to begin with, as an evil slave trade. The government began to regulate things because the people needed answers. They needed solutions. It started in a courtroom. And then it went to the legislatures. That’s how slavery began. And it took a long time to enslave an entire race of people, and convince another race of people that they were somehow or another less than them.

History? Get me rewrite! Forget the facts. If you thought slavery was caused by greed and a penchant among the powerful to oppress the powerless that predates recorded history, you’re wrong.

Obama of having “a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture,” and said, “I’m not saying he doesn’t like white people, I’m saying he has a problem. This guy is, I believe, a racist.”

Over at News Hounds, where they watch Fox so we don’t have to, dear readers — for which I am, and you should be, eternally grateful — they caught one of the subtlest attempts at race baiting on the Republicans’ in-house network this year. During a bizarre peroration by Glenn Beck in which he tried his damnedest to help the campaign of Delaware Christian tea bagger Christine O’Donnell get up out of its defensive crouch, he flashed a header on the screen behind that said “Coons in Africa.”

The headline officially referred to O’Donnell’s opponent, Chris Coons, the Democratic nominee who is a county official in Delaware. But come on.
