You heard it here first.
I don’t think Bush was lying when he told reporters last week that Rumsfeld was here to stay. I think he was lying when he told reporters this week that he was planning to get rid of him all along.
I mean, come on, since when has Bush/Rove ever been careful not to do something that would impact an election, the justification he gave for not announcing Rumsfeld’s departure sooner?
And the reason why is I didn’t want to inject a major decision about this war in the final days of a campaign…
And so [Rumsfeld] and I both agreed in our meeting yesterday that it was appropriate that I accept his resignation. And so the decision was made — actually, I thought we were going to do fine yesterday.
Think about it. If Bush had done as “fine” as he expected, do you think for one minute he’d have gotten rid of Rummy? Hell no. He’d have stayed the course with maniacal glee, tacking that boat right over a tsunami without a backward glance.
On the other hand, if they had realized how fed up we all were with his conduct of the war (among other things), do you really believe he wouldn’t have rushed to dump Rumsfeld? Think how differently the election would have gone if he had. People would have taken it as a sign of hope that things were going to change, and that maybe the Republicans aren’t such bad fellows after all. And they would have softened on throwing the bastards out.
He blew it but he wasn’t lying then, he’s lying now.

That’s my take on it also. The funniest comment I’ve read on the whole Rumsfeld debacle came during an online discussion of reports that Republicans are furious with Bush for giving Rummy his walking papers a day after the election when doing it earlier could have salvaged at least the Senate.

Yeah, that makes sense. Bush’s first reaction is to look for somebody else to take the fall. Rumsfeld was the obvious choice. But note that Bush immediately realized the election was a disaster because it affects Bush himself, but he still hasn’t realized what a disaster the war is, because it doesn’t affect him.

I have a slightly off center set of questions…when and where did Bushie admit that we went into Iraq for the oil? Isn’t that huge? I realize we all assumed that the was underlying purpose but when did his loose lips actually flap that disclosure? Help!
I don’t remember when that lying SOB admitted that it was always about the OIL which the whole world has always known,but I’m not sure that it matters{except that there’s yet another admission of lying}, as from the moment these thugs glommed on to the corridors of power they lied at every word that came out of their mouths.I used to get a stomachache every time one of them lied.I had alot of them these past years.These people are sociopaths and I’m not sure they know what truth and reality are{except for Cheney}.They know how to lie,cheat,steal and commit murder in a fashion so huge that it shocks{and awes}those witnessing it into inaction.But the shock has worn off.Like when you are in a nightmare and you know it is so bad that you have to force yourself to wake up because it is so unbareable.That’s what just happened,we have woken up from a collective nightmare.Now we must fight to stay awake for our very survival,like those who are still in the cages of the Bush regime, being sadistically tortured somewhere in the world because these bastards are still in power.We are still in danger do not go Back to Sleep! or we may not wake up again from the comba we have come out of.
