Walker Leads, Bush Lags in Iowa

Gov. Scott Walker’s big early lead in the Republican Caucus, followed by Sen. Rand Paul and Sen. Marco Rubio at 13%, Sen. Ted Cruz at 12%, Mike Huckabee at 11%, Ben Carson at 7% and Jeb Bush at 5%, according to a new Quinnipiac poll in Iowa. No other candidate is above 3%.

The DNC “announced that the party’s primary election season will feature six officially sanctioned debates, a light schedule for a thin Democratic field — one that stands in striking contrast to the lineup for the already-crowded race for the GOP nomination,” the Washington Post reports.
Religious Right Not a Sure Thing for Huckabee
The religious right remains the largest voting bloc in the Republican Party, and that gives Mike Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor, the potential to play a big role in the presidential nominating contest. … But Mr. Huckabee, who was set to announce his presidential bid Tuesday morning, will have a harder time winning Iowa than he did in 2008, when religious conservatives had serious reservations about the two main candidates, John McCain and Mitt Romney. This year’s conservative favorites do not have Mr. Romney’s vulnerabilities among evangelicals, like Mormonism or past support for abortion rights.

Bobby Jindal (R) tries to close a $1.6 billion budget hole, the Baton Rouge Advocate reports. “The A&E television reality show takes part in the nation’s most generous entertainment-tax credit program. Jindal is proposing no changes, arguing that reducing such breaks is tantamount to raising taxes.”

Expel Texas: Gov. Abbott Musters State Guard in Apparent Move to Confront U.S. Troops, Provoke War with United States
Last week, Texas’ new governor, Greg Abbott, announced what was arguably the most militaristic anti-government action taken by a U.S. governor since the Civil War. Abbott ordered the Texas State Guard to muster in Bastrop County this summer to protect local residents while United States troops, including Army Green Berets and Navy SEALs, conduct training exercises there. The governor’s orders instructed the Guard to ensure that Bastrop County residents’ “safety, constitutional rights, private property rights and civil liberties will not be infringed.”
