If the name Dinesh D’Souza rings a bell it may be because you remember him as the right-wing propagandist/nutjob whom Newt Gingrich was quoting when he came up with the schtick about Pres. Obama being “anti-colonial.”

Conservative “intellectuals” bought into this this bizarre critique, of course, even though it put Obama in pretty good presidential company. It’s fair to say that Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Adams, Madison, Monroe and Jackson were all “anti-colonial,” for example.

None of the proposals domestically add up (which means much more Republican-driven debt); we will be soon engaged in a protracted war against Iran, regardless of the views of the American public (more debt, untold damage to the global economy, a wave of renewed Jihadism to be met with more bombs and restored torture); millions will soon lose the only decent chance they had for health insurance, and those of us with pre-existing conditions will remain vulnerable to bankrupting ourselves if we ever lose private insurance for a period; but we sure will have more battleships for the long hoped-for neocon Cold War with China. There is, of course, the possibility that the ground will shift in the last two weeks. A decisive debate performance, a late revelation, a sudden, seismic event at home or abroad could turn this cliffhanger into a rout. As of now, though, 2012 looks as if it’s about to join that foursome of elections, one that will require gallons of caffeine on Election Night and the next morning before we learn whether the moving vans will be called to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
