The head of Orlando’s Islamic Society of Central Florida was among the many folks in Gainesville lining up to see Pastor Terry Jones, the leader of the 50-member Dove Outreach Center, who plans to spend Saturday night burning Qur’ans. But unlike the FBI agents and members of the press gathered nearby, Mohammad Musri was making an offer.

Mohammad Musri, of the Islamic Society, went to the church for the second day in a row Thursday afternoon, this time to make a deal. He said if Jones agrees to call off the Quran burning, he will urge Feisal Abdul Rauf, the controversial Imam behind the proposed mosque and community center near New York’s “ground zero,” to relocate the planned mosque in New York City.

No word on Jones’ decision.

It’s been a busy day for Jones, as he counts down to the fateful moment at 6 p.m. Eastern time on Saturday when he has promised to burn Qur’ans in commemoration of the events of Sept. 11, 2001.

Obama: “Yeah. I hope he listens to…those better angels.”

FBI sources tell ABC News that the agents were there to brief Jones on all the death threats he’s received and to discuss how they’re going to protect him and the church on Saturday.

Protecting University of Florida Gator football fans is also a major issue, as the home team plays cross-state rival Tampa’s University of South Florida Bulls in a game that kicks off at 12:21. What with the press, protestors, and supporters flocking to Gainesville to witness the Qur’an bonfire, Gainesville police have their hands full. Add thousands of drunk football fans and who knows what will happen?

The estimated cost of the extra security planned for Jones’ event is “tens of thousands of dollars,” according to Gainesville City Manager Russ Blackburn. Blackburn said he’ll “send Pastor Jones the bill.”

“We want him to at least be aware of the cost incurred because of his actions,” he said…

Gainesville Mayor Craig Lowe…asked residents to avoid the church’s cross streets on Saturday and to watch for suspicious behavior.

“If you see anything out of the ordinary, no matter how small it might be, report it immediately,” he said.

The mayor also urged residents and football fans in town not to do anything to “unnecessarily involve the police.”

Pres. Obama repeated his call to Jones’ presumed better judgement during an interview today with ABC’s George Stephanopoulous.

OBAMA: If he’s listening, I just hope he understands that what he’s proposing to do is completely contrary to our values of Americans. That this country has been built on the notions of religious freedom and religious tolerance. And as a very practical matter, as commander of chief of the Armed Forces of the United States I just want him to understand that this stunt that he is talking about pulling could greatly endanger our young men and women in uniform who are in Iraq, who are in Afghanistan. We’re already seeing protests against Americans just by the mere threat —

STEPHANOPOULOS: What more could happen?

OBAMA: –that he’s making.

STEPHANOPOULOS: What are you worried about?

OBAMA: Well, look, the … this is a recruitment bonanza for Al Qaeda. You know, you could have serious violence in places like Pakistan or Afghanistan. This could increase the recruitment of individuals who’d be willing to blow themselves up in American cities, or European cities. You know and so you know, I just hope that, he says he’s … he’s someone who s motivated by his faith.

STEPHANOPOULOS: And he says he’s praying on it.

OBAMA: Yeah. I hope he listens to…those better angels.

Meanwhile, Sarah Palin came as close as she could to siding with Pastor Jones.

Sarah Palin said in a Facebook post that although people have the constitutional right to burn the Quran, doing so would be an “insensitive and an unnecessary provocation – much like building a mosque at ground zero.”

  1. I think Mohammad Musris proposal is not very smart.
If Jones accepts and lets just say the mosque doesnt get built for some reason then everyone would think that Jones was the reason, the guy would be a national hero and threatening to burn Qurans would be a negotiating tool for the future.

  2. ..Also i think personally this man is getting way too much attention. I wish everyone, especially the Muslims would just ignore him. Treat him as a crazy man who likes burning stuff illegally and he will fizzle away.

  3. If the Muslim center accepts a deal like that, they will tacitly be accepting collective blame for 9/11, which they should not do.

I agree with Sebastian as well, although it would be hard for the Muslim center to ignore this when the media is pounding it 24/7. They seem to do very well with symbolic issues with few long term consequences and don’t even bother with substantive stuff that has historic consequences.
