According to a recent Gallup poll, 57 percent of Americans support, 38 percent are not bothered by the annual National Day of Prayer, which President Obama proclaimed will be celebrated tomorrow, May 6, and only 5 percent oppose it. Of those who say religion is important in their lives 74 percent support the day, while 66 percent of those who say religion is not important say it doesn’t matter to them, but only 9 percent oppose it outright.
This year’s commemoration has involved some controversy as the National Day of Prayer Task Force, a private group organizing thousands of events across the country, has made it a goal to promote and publicize Christian prayer specifically.
Americans generally endorse the task force’s goal, as 62 percent say promoting Christian prayer should be a major goal of the events while 36 percent disagree. Of religious Americans, 74 percent support promoting Christian prayer while 23 percent do not. Among nonreligious Americans, 64 do not support promoting Christian prayer while a surprising 34 percent do.

The poll finds Americans in widespread agreement that prayers are heard and responded to — 83 percent say there is a God who answers prayers, while 9 percent believe there is a God who does not answer prayers and 5 percent believe no God exists.
