Flashback 2007: Limbaugh in a Snit – Nominated Himself for Nobel Peace Prize, Lost to Al Gore

Reacting to the news that Pres. Obama had won the Nobel Peace Prize, Rush Limbaugh announced that his hatred of the American president has driven him into the arms of anti-U.S. entities like Iran and the Taliban:

LIMBAUGH: I think that everybody is laughing. Our president is a worldwide joke. Folks, do you realize something has happened here that we all agree with the Taliban and Iran about and that is he doesn’t deserve the award. Now that’s hilarious, that I’m on the same side of something with the Taliban, and that we all are on the same side as the Taliban.

This brought to mind the last time Limbaugh got into a snit about the peace prize — in 2007 when he nominated himself only to lose to Al Gore.

Here’s a reprint of a story we published about it on Oct. 14, 2007:

Hate in the House: GOP Rep. Gohmert Piles on Pedophila, Necrophilia Smears against Gays

Following in the footsteps of former Sen. Rick “Man on Dog” Santorum and megachurch preacher Rick Warren, Rep. Louie Gohmert, the jug-eared Texas Republican, took the House floor last week and compared gay people to pedophiles and necrophiliacs:

REP. LOUIE GOHMERT R-TEXAS: The definition of sexual orientation is wide open to all kinds of interpretation. And some day, some court, somewhere, will say, “You know what? Sexual orientation means exactly what those words mean.” If you’re orientated toward animals, bestiality, then, you know, that’s not something that can be used-held against you or any bias be held against you for that. Which means you’d have to strike any laws against bestiality, if you’re orientated toward corpses, toward children, you know, there are all kinds of perversions.

Leaving aside the heartlessness of this sort of rhetoric and the damage it does to gay teens in Texas and elsewhere, it has to be pointed out that Gohmert’s formulation is wrong. When people have sex with children, animals or corpses, the sex acts are non-consensual. When adults choose to have sex with each other, it’s not only consensual, it’s none of Louie Gohmert’s fucking business.

The Republican Party has thrown in its lot with the terrorists — the Taliban and Hamas this morning — in criticizing the President for receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. Republicans cheered when America failed to land the Olympics and now they are criticizing the President of the United States for receiving the Nobel Peace Prize — an award he did not seek but that is nonetheless an honor in which every American can take great pride — unless of course you are the Republican Party.

Borowitz Explains Nobel Thinking: It Was the Beer Summit

beer-summitComedian Andy Borowitz details the process used by the Nobel Peace Prize committee in selecting Pres. Barack Obama as the 2009 winner.

Nobel insiders revealed that the President’s “beer summit” at the White House put him over the top.

“The committee was definitely split down the middle right up until the end,” said Agot Valle, a Norwegian politician and member of the five-person Nobel committee. “Some of them were still quite upset about that nasty business with the Somali pirates.”

But, according to Ms. Valle, “someone brought up the beer summit, and we all agreed that that was awesome.”

Where’s Charlie? “Florida’s Most Influential” List Doesn’t Include Gov. Crist

FL_influencers_cover_smallOne name was conspicuously absent from a recent list of Florida’s political influencers: the governor himself, Charlie Crist.

The list was compiled for Politics Magazine, and includes 50 Democrats and 50 Republicans. It was put together by a former reporter and seemingly knowledgeable wonk.

Lucy Morgan was a St. Petersburg Times reporter from 1968 to 2005. She now works on special projects and writes occasional columns for the Times. She’s the winner of the 1985 Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting. After her retirement, the Florida Senate honored her by renaming the press gallery in Tallahassee the Lucy Morgan Senate Press Gallery. Elections’ Politics magazine, is a new regular feature designed to help you navigate the treacherous waters of state-level politics.

Morgan explained some of her methodology after a comment left on a Facebook profile referenced the list and noted that at least one person, Ron Book, rather than being a registered Democrat, is “No Party Affiliation,” or NPA.

The list was intended to be a look at those who have influence with state and federal government – those who can get something done. It wasn’t supposed to be a list of public officials. And there are two – one on each list – who are not registered in the party where they have the most influence. And I suspect everyone with knowledge of Florida politics would have a different lisst (sic)!

Further comments continued to note the lack of the Republican governor. While not replying specifically to that concern, Morgan’s response still said it all.

actually I was looking for people who seem to have influence that goes beyond the moment – more than just the job they are in and I don’t think some of those you mention would fall in that category..

For a guy whose greatest accomplishment since taking office is marrying, but not necessarily living with, a New York socialite, Crist could have done worse than not making this list. His Republican challenger in the 2010 U.S. Senate race, former state House Speaker Marco Rubio, however, did. Whoops.

California Poll: Underdog Surges in GOP Gov Primary, Still Trails Dems Brown, Newsom

Campbell, right, with Schwarzenegger
Campbell, right, with Schwarzenegger

Just two weeks after the California Republican Party was rocked by the revelation that its anointed candidate for governor, former eBay executive Meg Whitman, did not register to vote until she was 46 years old, a new statewide poll finds Whitman tied with former Rep. Tom Campbell, who until now had trailed in his race against Whitman and state Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner.

The poll results are most dire for Poizner, who came out aggressively against Whitman during the state Republican convention two weeks ago over her failure to vote for 28 years after she became eligible. In a straw poll among delegates at the convention, Poizner took 78 percent of the vote, trouncing both Whitman (14 percent) and Campbell (8 percent).

President Obama has changed very dramatically the international presence. We feel he has emphasized multilateral diplomacy, he has addressed international institutions, dialogue negotiations. He has inspired the world with his vision of a world without nuclear arms. There’s a whole list.

Obama Dissing Takes Verdant Turn

OK, it’s one thing to shout down the President of the United States during his first address to a joint session session of Congress, but it’s a whole other thing to make him into a Chia Pet.

I mean, a bobblehead doll can project a certain air of dignity and wisdom, but a Chia Pet? No way. And would they have made President Obama into a Chia Pet if he weren’t black? The terracotta coloration of the “handmade pottery planter” is certainly somewhat reminiscent of Obama’s dusky complexion, but the chia seeds are just going to grow out into a wild green Afro.

The offending head of clay comes in two versions: happy or determined.

Happy is more valuable, I suppose. It sells for $19.99 on Amazon, while the determined planter sells for $18.99. Both come with “Chia seed packet for 3 plantings, convenient plastic drip tray, planting and care instruction sheet.”

If you support President Obama, don’t add to the atmosphere of disrespect and animosity that currently characterizes our nation’s political discourse by buying one of these offensive effigies.

That is, unless you need a great gag gift for a Democrat.

Conservatives Want a Less Liberal Bible

Bible

As if the King James version of the Bible weren’t bad enough already, there’s a merry band of wingnuts at Conservapedia who think it’s way too liberal and needs a good rewritin’. So they are correcting the holy book along the following parameters:

As of 2009, there is no fully conservative translation of the Bible which satisfies the following ten guidelines:[2]

1. Framework against Liberal Bias: providing a strong framework that enables a thought-for-thought translation without corruption by liberal bias
2. Not Emasculated: avoiding unisex, “gender inclusive” language, and other modern emasculation of Christianity
3. Not Dumbed Down: not dumbing down the reading level, or diluting the intellectual force and logic of Christianity; the NIV is written at only the 7th grade level[3]
4. Utilize Powerful Conservative Terms: using powerful new conservative terms as they develop;[4] defective translations use the word “comrade” three times as often as “volunteer”; similarly, updating words which have a change in meaning, such as “word”, “peace”, and “miracle”.
5. Combat Harmful Addiction: combating addiction by using modern terms for it, such as “gamble” rather than “cast lots”;[5] using modern political terms, such as “register” rather than “enroll” for the census
6. Accept the Logic of Hell: applying logic with its full force and effect, as in not denying or downplaying the very real existence of Hell or the Devil.
7. Express Free Market Parables; explaining the numerous economic parables with their full free-market meaning
8. Exclude Later-Inserted Liberal Passages: excluding the later-inserted liberal passages that are not authentic, such as the adulteress story
9. Credit Open-Mindedness of Disciples: crediting open-mindedness, often found in youngsters like the eyewitnesses Mark and John, the authors of two of the Gospels
10. Prefer Conciseness over Liberal Wordiness: preferring conciseness to the liberal style of high word-to-substance ratio; avoid compound negatives and unnecessary ambiguities; prefer concise, consistent use of the word “Lord” rather than “Jehovah” or “Yahweh” or “Lord God.”

Yeah, I know, kind of incoherent, ain’t it? I think these guys accepted the logic of hell when they wrote up their guidelines. I mean, when did the meanings of “word,” “peace” and “miracle” change? I don’t think I got that memo. And what does “thought-for-thought” translation mean?

And how did a “high word-to-substance ratio” become liberal? Haven’t they heard John Boehner speak lately?

So what is the result of this attempt to “translate” something that is already in English? Well these jarheads haven’t attacked the Old Testament yet, though they’ve been whooping up on the New testament at a fairly furious pace. Here’s some conservatized text from the Book of John:

“As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee,” becomes As the prophets wrote, Listen, “I send my messenger before you, who shall shall clear your way.”

“The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight,” becomes The messenger preaches among skeptics, “Prepare for the way of the Lord and make straight His path.”

Here’s a good one — the description of John the Baptist: “And John was clothed with camel’s hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey,” is now John survived on bare necessities, wearing a camel’s hair habit with a leather belt; his food consisted of locusts and wild honey;

And because what could be more liberal than a ghost? “I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost,” is rendered “I have baptized you with water, but He shall baptize you with the Divine Guide.” tentatively using “Divine Guide” per talk page.

Finally, it’s clear that what these guys really hate about the Bible is not its liberalness, but its poetry: “And immediately the Spirit driveth him into the wilderness,” thus becomes The Divine Guide then led Jesus into the desert.

Somehow “the Father, the Son and the Divine Guide” just doesn’t have the same ring to it, does it? I can’t wait to see what they do with the Song of Solomon.

Not that I care whether a bunch of conservatives with no imagination and too much time on their hands hacks the Holy Babble into pieces, but they should at least be intellectually honest about it. While they frame what they are doing as rigorous and scholarly, if they really wanted to do it correctly, they would go back to one of the original texts.

The King James version of the Bible is laden with all kinds of stuff and language that wasn’t in the original Greek, Latin and Hebrew texts. So changing “Holy Ghost” to “Divine Guide” doesn’t really accomplish much beyond taking some of the mumbo-jumbo away and turning a spirit into a kind of spiritual Boy Scout with a compass.

In a way I admire these guys for undertaking such a massive project, but as one who appreciates well-written fiction, I just hate to see the poetry of the King James Bible turned into the language of an annual report.
