Why Republicans Resist Sotomayor

A new Gallup poll sheds light on why the Republican Party is so resistant to President Obama’s nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court:

The survey said only 11 percent of Republicans are Hispanics or blacks or members of other races. More than six in 10 are white conservatives and the rest whites with other ideological leanings. That compares with 36 percent of Democrats who are Hispanics or non-white and 27 percent of independents.

The Republicans would do well to ignore their innate racism (party chair Michael Steele excepted) and listen instead to the will of the American voters as uncovered by a recent Quinnipiac poll:

American voters approve of President Obama’s pick of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court by a 54 percent to 24 percent margin, with 22 percent still undecided. Democrats support the nomination by 81 percent to 3 percent and independent voters by 50 percent to 26 percent, while Republicans oppose it 46 percent to 26 percent. Men approve of the nomination 48 percent to 31 percent while women approve 59 percent to 18 percent.

Quote du Jour

I know President Bush and Vice President Cheney talk with regularity. I know the former president appreciates Dick’s forthright defense of the administration’s polices. And I know Vice President Cheney understands the special role that the former president occupies.

— Karl Rove, quoted by Politico, suggesting former President Bush is supportive of former Vice President Cheney speaking out against President Obama

Breaking: Franken Case Being Heard Now

Today’s the day in Minnesota: we might have a new Democratic Senator in Al Franken. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee’s Arjun Jaikumar is live blogging and twittering from inside the courtroom where Sen. Norm Coleman’s challenge of a ruling favorable to Franken is being heard. Tune in for what appears to be some good stuff for our side:

10:04: Coleman attorney Joe Friedberg: We’re making due-process and equal-protection claims. Admits the due-process claim came only recently. “You changed the rules after the game was played”. Ha ha ha.

10:08: Justice Anderson: “Why is this offer of proof not inadequate?” Ouch.

10:14: Not an auspicious start for Friedberg. The justices seem very impatient and unimpressed…

10:24: Justice Anderson: “As loud as you speak on this issue, there’s language here you just can’t overcome”.

10:25: Marc Elias is on for Team Franken. He is one handsome devil.

10:32: Team Franken lays down numbers, coldly and efficiently. There are fewer disputed ballots where voter wasn’t registered than the margin between the two candidates.

See what I mean? Riveting!

Whose Hands are Bloody Now?

Dr. George Tiller, right, accepts an award

Anti-abortion extremists (is there another kind?) seem confused about who the victim is in the murder of Dr. George Tiller during a Wichita church service. Despite a years-long coordinated campaign of threats, harassment and incitement of violence against the family planning physician, their main concern is that they will face a backlash from sensible people. Whoops. Should of thought of that a little sooner.

From a transcript of the Bill O’Reilly show from June, 2007 in which Dr. Tiller was ambushed and goaded while attempting to get in his car:

Bill O’Reilly in 2007: “If the state of Kansas doesn’t stop this man, then anybody who prevents that from happening has blood on their hands”

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

PORTER BARRY, “FACTOR” PRODUCER: Why are you one of the only doctors who does these kind of abortions?

TILLER: Nice day isn’t it?

BARRY: They call you Tiller, the baby Killer. Is that appropriate? .

TILLER: I’m think I’m going to get in my car and go to work.

BARRY: Dr. Tiller, don’t you think…

TILLER: Hi, is this 911? This is Dr. George Tiller. I am at Edgemoore and Harry at QuickTrip. I’m being accosted by the people from O’Reilly. Yes, and they are preventing me from getting in my car and leaving.

BARRY: You can get in your car and go, Dr. Tiller.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

Bill O’Reilly, later in that same broadcast:

O’REILLY: Yes, I think we all know what this is. And if the state of Kansas doesn’t stop this man, then anybody who prevents that from happening has blood on their hands as the governor does right now, Governor [Kathleen] Sebelius.

Buchanan, Trancredo Aide Marcus Epstein Pleads Guilty to Racist Hate Crime

Students protest Tancredo during Epstein’s Youth for Western Civilization event at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, April 2009

Marcus Epstein, the 25-year-old executive director of a pair of Washington, D.C.-based nationalist, anti-immigrant organizations — Pat Buchanan’s American Cause and former Rep. Tom Tancredo’s Team America PAC — pleaded guilty on Friday to a July 2007 random assault on an African-American woman on a Washington sidewalk. Prosecutors in the case had classified it as a hate crime:

Epstein was walking down the street making offensive remarks when he encountered the victim, called her [a “nigger”] and struck her in her head. He was briefly detained by the woman’s husband, but was able to escape, only to be arrested minutes later by a Secret Service officer who witnessed the attack. According to the officer’s statement, a friend of Epstein’s informed him that he had been drinking.

In the 22 months since the attack, Epstein has maintained a high profile as one of the up and coming leaders in the nationalist, anti-immigrant movement. He has written for far right wing outlets, including Buchanan’s American Conservative magazine, Human Events, Washington Examiner, Taki’s Magazine and Townhall.com.

He has also been a regular blogger for VDARE, a right-wing extremist site dedicated to Virginia Dare, who — as everyone who took North Carolina history in the seventh grade knows — was the first white child born to British colonials, in 1587, on the Outer Banks. (Tar Heels are likely to see it as a fey homage, since Virginia was the youngest member of the unfortunate “Lost Colony” that mysteriously disappeared before British ships could return with supplies.)

In January, Epstein was instrumental in producing a report for Buchanan’s American Cause that declared that racism and immigrant-bashing were the solution — not a glaring obstacle — to the Republican Party’s eventual return to power. After the group released its report at the National Press Club in Washington, the New York Times responded with a scathing editorial titled, “The Nativists Are Restless.”

Epstein also founded Youth for Western Civilization , which bills itself as “America’s Right Wing Youth Movement.” The group’s logo has an oddly puerile, heavy metal vibe and depicts the shape of a heraldic shield, bisected in black and white, with a man’s forearm clinching a Medieval axe that bears an uncanny resemblance to a Roman fasci.

In April, anti-racist protesters shut down a Youth for Western Civilization event featuring Tancredo at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill:
