The “Other” Welcome Home Palin Rally

These pix are from the “Alaska Women Reject Palin” rally in Anchorage. According to mudflats, the blog from Alaska that covered the rally:

Basically, in Anchorage, if you can get 25 people to show up at an event, it’s a success. So, I thought to myself, if we can actually get 100 people there…we’ll be doing good. A real statement will have been made. I confess, I still had a mental image of 15 demonstrators surrounded by hundreds of menacing “socialist baby-killing maggot” haters…

The organizers had someone walk the rally with a counter, and they clicked off well over 1400 people (not including the 90 counter-demonstrators). This was the biggest political rally ever, in the history of the state. I was absolutely stunned. The second most amazing thing is how many people honked and gave the thumbs up as they drove by.

This is the second great link we’ve been sent from mudflats, which is becoming the voice of the rest of Alaska that you don’t hear about on the mainstream news broadcasts. We’ve added it to our blogroll under “Western.”

McCain Ad’s Subtle Racism: Attacks Obama For ‘Disrespectful’ Behavior to a White Woman

“Disrespectful” was a powerful word in the Jim Crow era. Like “uppity,” it had a special meaning when used to describe the behavior of African Americans. A black man who was thought to be disrespectful to a white man risked being beaten. A black man who was disrespectful to a white woman could well end up dead.

Here’s what the female announcer in John McCain’s new ad says:

ANNOUNCER: He was the world’s biggest celebrity. But his star is fading. So they lashed out at Sarah Palin. Dismissed her as “good looking.” That backfired. So they said she was doing “what she was told.” Then desperately called Sarah Palin a liar. How disrespectful. (Emphasis added.)

First of all, the fact that Palin is an audacious and extravagant liar has been clearly established. Starting with her convention speech, she has repeatedly lied about the fact that she opposed the Bridge to Nowhere and sold a plane on Ebay, just for starters.

The matronly indignation voiced by the new ad’s announcer juxtaposed with the visual of Obama’s face in profile next to the words “how disrespectful” reads loudly and clearly to the ad’s target demo, the racist GOP base. And yet the messaging is apparently too subtle for the punditocracy — even though this same group spent endless hours last week debating whether Obama’s “lipstick” remark was sexist or not. Let’s review Obama’s statement, just for grins:

OBAMA: Let’s just list this for a second. John McCain says he’s about change, too. Except — and so I guess his whole angle is, “Watch out, George Bush, except for economic policy, health-care policy, tax policy, education policy, foreign policy, and Karl Rove-style politics. We’re really gonna shake things up in Washington.” That’s not change. That’s just calling some — the same thing, something different. But you know, you can — you know, you can put lipstick on a pig; it’s still a pig.

Despite the fact that Obama never referred even indirectly to McCain’s vice presidential nominee — and the equally confounding fact that the nominee has repeatedly compared herself to a female dog in lipstick (pig is bad, but bitch is okay?) — the Rove element in the McCain campaign has successfully recast Obama’s statement as sexist, at least in the empty minds of Fox News viewers.

The racist coding in the McCain ad is more subtle than the infamous “hands” ad that Sen. Jesse Helms, the proud North Carolina bigot who gave McCain senior adviser Charlie Black his start, ran against Harvey Gantt, the architect and former mayor of Charlotte who was African American. The “hands” ad showed the hands and arms of a white man crumpling up a notice he’d received that his job had been given to a less-qualified “minority.”

But the intended effect of the McCain ad is the same — to stoke the flames of racial hatred and fear among voters at the heart of the Republican base.

The American Idol Candidate

Roger Ebert:

What defines an “American Idol” finalist? They’re good-looking, work well on television, have a sunny personality, are fierce competitors, and so talented, why, they’re darned near the real thing. There’s a reason “American Idol” gets such high ratings. People identify with the contestants. They think, Hey, that could be me up there on that show!

I don’t want a vice president who is darned near good enough. I want a vice president who is better, wiser, well-traveled, has met world leaders, who three months ago had an opinion on Iraq.

…I don’t want a vice president who is darned near good enough. I want a vice president who is better, wiser, well-traveled, has met world leaders, who three months ago had an opinion on Iraq. Someone who doesn’t repeat bald-faced lies about earmarks and the Bridge to Nowhere. Someone who doesn’t appoint Alaskan politicians to “study” global warming, because, hello! It has been studied…

I would also want someone who didn’t make a teeny little sneer when referring to “people who go to the Ivy League.” When I was a teen I dreamed of going to Harvard, but my dad, an electrician, told me, “Boy, we don’t have the money. Thank your lucky stars you were born in Urbana and can go to the University of Illinois right here in town.” So I did, very happily…

And how can a politician her age have never have gone to Europe? My dad had died, my mom was working as a book-keeper and I had a job at the local newspaper when, at 19, I scraped together $240 for a charter flight to Europe. I had Arthur Frommer’s $5 a Day under my arm, started in London, even rented a Vespa and drove in the traffic of Rome. A few years later, I was able to send my mom, along with the $15 a Day book.

You don’t need to be a pointy-headed elitist to travel abroad. You need curiosity and a hunger to see the world.

Deepak Chopra Unmasks Palin and Deconstructs Her Appeal

When one thinks of insightful political commentary, the name Deepak Chopra does not leap to mind. But the Indian medical doctor and New Age leader nailed Sarah Palin’s appeal better than anyone I’ve read so far. See if you don’t think his analysis is right on the money.

Sometimes politics has the uncanny effect of mirroring the national psyche even when nobody intended to do that…

Sarah Palin is the reverse of Barack Obama, in essence his shadow, deriding his idealism and turning negativity into a cause for pride

[Sarah Palin] is the reverse of Barack Obama, in essence his shadow, deriding his idealism and turning negativity into a cause for pride. In psychological terms the shadow is that part of the psyche that hides out of sight, countering our aspirations, virtue, and vision with qualities we are ashamed to face: anger, fear, revenge, violence, selfishness, and suspicion of “the other.” For millions of Americans, Obama triggers those feelings, but they don’t want to express them. He is calling for us to reach for our higher selves, and frankly, that stirs up hidden reactions of an unsavory kind…In her acceptance speech Gov. Palin sent a rousing call to those who want to celebrate their resistance to change and a higher vision.

Look at what she stands for:

  • Small town values — a nostaligic return to simpler times disguises a denial of America’s global role, a return to petty, small-minded parochialism.
  • Ignorance of world affairs — a repudiation of the need to repair America’s image abroad.
  • Family values — a code for walling out anybody who makes a claim for social justice. Such strangers, being outside the family, don’t need to be needed.
  • Rigid stands on guns and abortion — a scornful repudiation that these issues can be negotiated with those who disagree.
  • Patriotism — the usual fallback in a failed war.
  • ”Reform” — an italicized term, since in addition to cleaning out corruption and excessive spending, one also throws out anyone who doesn’t fit your ideology.

What Was John McCain Doing on a Yacht with a Conman, a K Street Lobbyist and a Hollywood Celebrity?

On Wednesday night, a little reporting about the real John McCain made it past the McCain campaign’s carpetbombing of lies against Barack Obama. Predictably, the story, which came from The Nation magazine and MSNBC’S “Rachel Maddow Show,” has otherwise been ignored by the corporate media since then:

RACHEL MADDOW: So, we’re on the air three days so far and we’ve already got ourselves an exclusive. It’s a photographic image that appears to undercut the well-crafted focus group-tested image of John McCain being pushed on the American people by his campaign. The next time you hear McCain described as anti-lobbyist reformer, the man fighting against entrenched interests in Washington, who rebuffed celebrity, perhaps this is the photo that should come to mind.

Now, this was obtained exclusively by the “Nation Magazine” … The magazine reports that it was taken on August 29th, 2006 in Montenegro … On the right hand side, that appears to be John McCain in the purple baseball cap. Purple is the color of his beloved Arizona Diamondbacks, I’m just saying.

And you’re probably thinking to yourself, you know, that guy on the left looks kind of familiar and so doest [sic] the woman who’s with him. The woman there is Hollywood star, Ann Hathaway—“Princess Diaries,” “Devil Wears Prada” [and “Brokeback Mountain”]. The guy on the left is her then-boyfriend, Italian entrepreneur, Raffaello Follieri. The reason that Raffaello looks familiar is because he pled guilty today to a conspiracy to commit wire fraud, eight counts of wire fraud, and five counts of money laundering. He is headed for the crowbar hotel, the pokey.

The feds busted Mr. Follieri because he posed as the CFO of the Vatican in order to win friends in high places and then take their money. That takes us back to the photo. Why exactly is the senior senator from Arizona apparently boarding this yacht in Montenegro on his 70th birthday with a soon to be busted Italian conman?

Well, despite marketing himself as the anti-lobbyist, John McCain, in fact, has a campaign run by one of the biggest names in Washington lobbying, Rick Davis. And Davis has a rolodex full of high powered friends like Raffaello Follieri, the conman, who—“The Nation” reports—hired Rick Davis’ business partner shortly after this photo on the yacht was taken.

Imagine, dear reader, the brouhaha we’d be hearing if a photo surfaced of Barack Obama boarding a yacht with a conman, a lobbyist and Hollywood star. But why are we surprised that there hasn’t been a peep about this in the MSM since Maddow reported it Wednesday night? There is a reason McCain calls the corporate media his base.

Follieri’s victim was Ron Burkle, the entrepreneur who made a billion dollars by making Ralph’s Supermarkets ubitquious, whose primary residence is Green Acres, the Beverly Hills estate built by Silent film star Harold Lloyd, but who is probably best known as an FOB, friend of Bill Clinton’s. Follieri took Burkle for $50 million:

Porky Palin Sought $197 Mil in Earmarks This Year

The way of Rove is to distract voters from the real issues by carpetbombing your opponent with lies: “We reformed the abuses of earmarks in our state, and it was while our opponent was requesting a billion dollars in earmarks as a senatorial privilege. What I was doing was vetoing half a billion as an executive responsibility.”

On the trail, Palin never actually claims that she hasn’t asked for earmarks. But she definitely leaves the impression that she’s every bit as passionate a fighter against the practice as McCain is, and certainly more so than Barack Obama, who didn’t endorse a moratorium on earmarks until this year.

“I championed earmark reform, also, to help Congress stop wasting money on those things that do not serve the public interest,” Palin said this morning at a campaign rally in Fairfax, Virginia. “We reformed the abuses of earmarks in our state, and it was while our opponent was requesting a billion dollars in earmarks as a senatorial privilege. What I was doing was vetoing half a billion as an executive responsibility.”

That speech touched off some unusually outraged media coverage, which noted that Palin had, in fact, asked Congress for nearly $200 million in federal earmarks just this year. Could it be? Where’s the evidence?

Fortunately, if you’re curious, you can look them all up, thanks to the Web site of Alaska’s earmark king, Sen. Ted Stevens — who was thoughtful enough to list all of the earmark requests he got and who asked for them. Sure enough, Palin’s office submitted 31 requests, totalling approximately $197 million. You can read the list here.

In 2008, Alaska got more earmarked federal funding per person than any other state.:

Arizona, the second fastest growing state in the nation, will receive just $18.70 per capita in federal earmarks this fiscal year. By comparison, Alaska – with roughly a tenth of Arizona’s population – is set to receive $506.34 per capita, the highest in the nation, according to Taxpayers for Common Sense, a watchdog group which tracks earmarks. The state of Alaska receives about three times as much as Arizona receives in actual dollars, $346 million to $119 million. [USA Today, 3/22/08 ]

The response by the McCain campaign is classic disinformation:

In a memo e-mailed to reporters this afternoon, the McCain campaign said Palin’s requests were a significant reduction from the record of the previous Alaska governor, Republican Frank Murkowski, whom Palin unseated in 2006. Murkowski’s final request asked for $350 million in earmarks, according to the campaign.

Meanwhile, McCain’s claim that Obama earmarked $1 billion in pork was also false:

In fact, the Illinois senator requested $311 million last year, according to the Associated Press, and none this year. In comparison, Gov. Palin has requested $750 million in her two years as governor — which the AP says is the largest per-capita request in the nation.” [Wall Street Journal, 9/9/08]

The trick is to lie so often that the Obama campaign and, occasionally, the media, fill the news hole with debunking.

Works every time.

McCain Son Follows Dad Into Financial Scandals

In timing that Martha Stewart could totally get behind, one of John McCain’s sons bailed off the board of Silver State Bank just before the FDIC shut it down. The $2 billion asset financial institution got in trouble because of risky real estate loans.

Andrew K. McCain sat on the board of Silver State Bank starting in February but resigned in July citing “personal reasons”

Silver State Bank ran into difficulty because of a substantial amount of “poor-quality loans primarily related to real estate development” in southern Nevada and other distressed markets, FDIC spokesman David Barr said…

Silver State Bank has operated 13 branches in the greater Las Vegas area and four in the greater Phoenix-Scottsdale area of Arizona as well as loan offices in Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Washington, Oregon, California and Florida.

Let’s see, the quality of your loans seems like something the members of your board’s audit committee should keep an eye on.

Andrew K. McCain, a son of Republican presidential nominee John McCain, sat on the boards of Silver State Bank and of its parent, Silver State Bancorp, starting in February but resigned in July citing “personal reasons,” corporate filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission show. Andrew McCain also was a member of the bank’s audit committee, responsible for oversight of the company’s accounting.

Andy jumped off the sinking ship just before it went under. A good auditor would have seen this coming and recommend a more prudent approach by the bank. Then again, why not just let the little people pay for rich people’s gambles? That’s what Andy’s dad did, after all.

John McCain was one of the “Keating Five,” five senators who were in the pocket of Charles Keating, chair of the board of Lincoln Savings and Loan. Keating exchanged campaign contributions for help in keeping regulators from doing their job and stopping similar risky gambits. The unhappy ending, of course, cost the taxpayers nearly $125 billion when the savings and loan industry shut down.

I doubt Andy’s worried about a job though.

The younger McCain, who is the chief financial officer of Hensley & Co., the beer distributorship of which Cindy McCain is chairwoman, is the Arizona senator’s adopted son from his first marriage.

It’s nice to have a rich mom. Or in John McCain’s case, a rich wife.

Woodward: Quiet in Iraq Is Due to New Top Secret U.S. Weapon, Surge Played Only a Minor Role

In an interview on NPR’s “Fresh Air” about his new book, The War Within: A Secret White House History 2006-2008, Bob Woodward said that his reporting had uncovered a top-secret new weapon introduced by U.S forces into Iraq that is primarily responsible for the current period of stability there.
“We are killing them all. We are killing all of the people who are the leaders.”
— Bush, on the effectiveness of the newU.S. secret weapon

The Bush/McCain Surge is just one of four factors that have tamped down violence, according to Woodward. The other factors include the Anbar Awakening, in which the Sunnis rejected Al Qaeda’s extremism; the stand-down of Muqtada al Sadr’s Shiite militia; and this new top secret weapon:

BOB WOODWARD: The fourth [element] is very top secret. And that is a series of operations that have been developed that allow U.S. forces to locate targets and kill extremists, al Qaeda members and members of the insurgency.

On Friday [Sept. 5, 2008], the White House in responding to the book for the first time confirmed that there were “newly developed techniques and operations which helped the situation stabilize in Iraq.”

TERRY GROSS: At the request of the military and the White House, you’re not revealing any of the details you found about what these top-secret operations are. What can you tell us?

BW: That it’s like any war. There’s always something — there’s a game-changer, a new development. In the early 20th century, it was the tank or the airplane. World War II, the Manhattan Project and the development of the Atomic Bomb. These [new] operations and techniques are not something where you’re going to see an explosion like an Atomic Bomb but they are incredibly effective. They are something that — as Pres. Bush said to people that I quote in the book, “We are killing them all. We are killing all of the people who are the leaders.” Now, it’s not literally “all,” but they are killing hundreds and hundreds of key people on the other side in this conflict.

So what could this new weapon be? Sharon Weinberger at Wired.com has a guess:
