Mea culpa: Jon, Trish and I consider ourselves, and are actually considered by several others, as being relatively intelligent, if a bit socially inept. So we should have seen this coming. We could have stopped him, but we didn’t. And I can’t tell you why we didn’t see it coming.
Tom DeLay has started his own weblog. If only we had secured the www.tomdelay.com domain, this wouldn’t have happened.
Here’s some of the crap you can find on Tom’s wingnut blog:

With anyone of these legs removed the stool, and our society, topples. Stool, indeed. A whole pile of it. Here’s how DeLay describes the purpose of his “blog”:
This weblog is one small way for us help create the conditions for positive action. We will foster discussion and debate, by boldly putting forth conservative belief and principle. We all must recognize, however, that while we create an environment for thoughtful conservative dialogue, there is an even deeper need for bold conservative action as we struggle to return our government to its First Principles. It is my hope that TomDelay.com can provide us with some of the fuel we will need to sustain our real world movement. Toward that end we have established a grassroots action and information network (GAIN) that will seek members in every congressional district across the country to which we will take grassroots action to advance our cause.
DeLay is already starting that conservative dialogue with real people leaving real comments. For instance, Margot wrote:

So if we need to secure the principles of order, justice, and freedom, it seems to me that we should support legitimate representative governments that are free of corruption, legalized bribery, the politics of personal attack, limited voting, monopolized media, and all the other issues that pose a threat to the order, justice, and freedom of our society.
I kid you not, I don’t think any of them were being intentionally ironic. They just seem oblivious to the fact that DeLay resigned from office because he was indicted on campaign finance abuse charges, was associated with disgraced uber-lobbyist Jack Abramoff and was actually arrested for money laundering, campaign finance violations and conspiracy. He’s still under indictment, and he’s out of jail on bond.
With such an outpouring of groupthink from his commenters, I thought maybe the “Hammer” was moderating out all moderate comments, but a couple of smart folks have slipped through:
Mr. Delay and the Republican Party got what it deserved. It wasn’t the criminal system that did them in. (although that helped) It was their greed that did them in. (although that helped) It wasn’t their failed policy and agenda that did them in. (although that helped) It was the American people. It’s funny how after all they did to this country they continue to whine and complain. The people spoke…and loudly. We’re happy to see you and you kind go, Mr, Delay. We don’t expect nor is a return of you and yours going to happen. Happily, the American people woke up.
