She’s right. It is incomprehensible:
A review of White House records has determined that George J. Tenet, then the director of central intelligence, did brief Condoleezza Rice and other top officials on July 10, 2001, about the looming threat from Al Qaeda, a State Department spokesman said Monday.
The account by the spokesman, Sean McCormack, came hours after Ms. Rice, the secretary of state, told reporters aboard her airplane that she did not recall the specific meeting on July 10, noting that she had met repeatedly with Mr. Tenet that summer about terrorist threats. Ms. Rice, the national security adviser at the time, said it was “incomprehensible” to suggest she had ignored dire terrorist threats two months before the Sept. 11 attacks.
Mr. McCormack also said records showed that the Sept. 11 commission had been informed about the meeting, a fact that former intelligence officials and members of the commission confirmed on Monday.
When details of the meeting emerged last week in a new book by Bob Woodward of The Washington Post, Bush administration officials questioned Mr. Woodward’s reporting.
Now, after several days, both current and former Bush administration officials have confirmed parts of Mr. Woodward’s account.
Officials now agree that on July 10, 2001, Mr. Tenet and his counterterrorism deputy, J. Cofer Black, were so alarmed about intelligence pointing to an impending attack by Al Qaeda that they demanded an emergency meeting at the White House with Ms. Rice and her National Security Council staff.
Comedian Rush Limbaugh weighs in (that’s a bad word) on the Foley sex scandal:
LIMBAUGH: I’m just thinking out loud here. What if somebody got to the page and said, you know, we want you to set Foley up. We need to do a little titillating thing here. Keep it and save it and so forth. How would you get a kid to do that? Yeah, who knows? You threaten him or pay him. There’s any number of ways given the kind of people that we’re dealing with and talking about here.
Now, folks, I don’t want to be misunderstood here. I’m not trying to mount any kind of a defense. That’s a bad word. I’m not trying to get into a defense of what Mark Foley did. Please don’t misunderstand. I’m just telling you that the — the — the orgy and the orgasm that has been taking place in the media since Friday and with the Democrats is — it’s all coordinated, and it’s all — it’s all oriented toward the election. There’s no concern about the kid — no concern about the children.
There is — there is — there’s not even any real problem with what Foley did, as we’ve discussed. In their hearts and minds and their crotches, they don’t have any problem with what Foley did. They’ve defended it over the — over the years.

Heckling Mr. Cheney: Remember the guy who, last fall in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, told Vice President Dick Cheney to perform an impossible sexual act on himself during a live television interview? He actually said it twice, if you recall. More recently, the same guy appeared on Chris Matthews’ “Hardball” show to “debate” Rockey Vaccarella, the Republican operative who hauled his FEMA trailer to Washington and told George Bush that if he could have another term of office, he’d solve all our nation’s problems (video here).
The guy is Ben Marble, M.D., emergency room physician, husband, father of three, front man for the rock band dR.O, Katrina recovery activist and shameless self-promoter. On Sept. 8, exactly a year after he hollered at Dick Cheney in Gulfport, Miss. (see the video here), Marble set out on his “Mission Not Accomplished Tour,” headed for Camp Democracy in Washington, D.C., and for what has become an annual gig with his band — playing in New York City on the anniversary of Sept. 11.
Pensito Review caught up with Ben Marble via e-mail after he returned from his trip.
Pensito Review: What was the goal of your trip and can you give us a recap of your weekend in Washington and New York?
Ben Marble: Basically, the primary goal of the trip was to film the “Mission NOT Accomplished” documentary so that is a goal that we did accomplish … here is a rough draft of what we did:
Friday 090806, i.e., the 1-year anniversary of the day I said ‘Go F Yourself, Mr. Cheney’
We first went to Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House where we called for Dubya Gump to resign and/or for people to only vote for candidates in Nov. who have vowed to IMPEACH DUBYA GUMP! Afterwards we went to “Camp Democracy” where I spoke briefly calling on everyone to vote only for candidates who have vowed to IMPEACH DUBYA GUMP! While there we met the “Iraq Veterans Against the War” and went and had some food/drinks with them.
Saturday 090906
What we thought would be a 2 hour drive took 4 and a half hours as we drove to Phoenixville, Pa. We missed the governor due to the long drive but we met several local people who took us back to their house for a jam session/Mission NOT Accomplished party! dR. O played an impromptu concert for a bunch of small children which meant we had to cut half of our set list of songs to play only ‘kid friendly’ stuff. The grandmother cooked us some great food. We also visited a cemetery where a man who took part in the ‘Charge of the light brigade’ was buried. We had a great time with them but eventually had to leave. Later we went to Philadelphia where we visited the museum of art where I recruited 2 people to run up the stairs with me and we all raised our fists in the air at the end. Finally we went to “Jim’s” downtown for some Philly Cheesesteak sandwiches.
arrived in NYC @ 2am Sunday 091006
I did an interview in the afternoon with the mediabloodhound (see www.mediabloodhound.com ) and near the end of that we heard Dubya Gump was at ground zero so we went down there to protest. I met the ‘granny peace brigade’ and we protested Dubya Gump shouting “VOTE TO IMPEACH” and “STOP EXPLOITING 911” among other things. Later we had dinner in little Italy.
Monday 091106
Traffic was insane causing me to miss my interview with Alex Bennett [of SIRIUS satellite radio]. Will hopefully get that rescheduled. We later went to ground zero again where we inadvertently ran into Alex Jones and his “911 truth” protesters. They believe “911 was an inside job’. I don’t personally believe that but I was standing in the middle of them holding up my 2-sided ‘VOTE TO IMPEACH’/“NEVER 4GET KATRINA” sign. What a strange day! That night my band, dR. O, played a concert at CBGB’s wrapping up the “Mission NOT Accomplished” tour!
PR: On a couple of Web sites that contain information about the Cheney incident a year ago, there appears to be some confusion about where that happened. One or two sites have it near your home in New Orleans, but you live in Mississippi. Can you give us a short description of what happened that day and where it happened?
BM: It happened 1 block off the beach on 2nd street in Gulfport, Ms. on Sept. 8, 2005
PR: Why did you call Dick “Mr. Cheney” when you told him to commit an impossible physical act?
BM: I thought it would be a bit more ironic if I called him “Mr.”
PR: Is it a Southern thing?
BM: probably so

Publisher’s clearing out: Okay, this might seem like a very local story, but the publisher of the Miami Herald, Jésus Díaz, resigned today. Whoo-hoo, you say, big deal, right?
Well, it is interesting insofar as there were two front-page stories about it, one a sometimes abstruse letter from Díaz himself and the other was a long, rambling account of the events that led to his resignation. Those events happened a few weeks ago when the Herald reported that several reporters for its Spanish-language sister publication, El Nuevo Herald, had received money from the U.S. government to provide anti-Castro commentaries on the U.S. government-run, Spanish-language Radio Martí network, which broadcasts propaganda to Cuba.
So Jesus fired them. On the spot. No appeal, no deal, no tolerance for ethical lapses of the sort that brought one reporter/commentator $179,000. That’s a lotta propaganda.
But then came the backlash. The local vocal Cuban community rose up, unsubscribed, pulled ads and boycotted the Herald in droves. Seems Jesus had run up against a basic difference between Spanish journalism and Anglo journalism. Apparently, in Spanish journalism it’s okay to eschew objectivism for partisan politics and accept money from the gubmint for it. Especially if you’re railing against Fidel Castro’s regime.
The twist came when the reporters said they had told their former editor — who happens to be conveniently dead — that they were taking the cash for bashing Fidel, and he had said it was okay. Whoops — suddenly Jesus is twisting in the wind, having rashly fired the ethically challenged reporters without having consulted his Quija board to see if indeed the dead editor had approved of the deal with the gubmint.
So amid the hue and cry, new Herald owners McClatchy, which just bought Herald parent Knight Ridder last spring, sent a couple of top guys to Miami to confer with the hapless Jesus. In the end, Díaz (who was born in Cuba and raised in Atlanta) was crucified on the cross of Cuban Castro hatred, and made to give “amnesty” to the reporters and very publicly resign, posting his letter of resignation on the front page of the Herald.
Only in Miami.
Forget for a minute that Radio Martí is heard by absolutely nobody in Cuba because its signal is blocked, despite the U.S. government spending $400,000 per month to broadcast the signal from an airplane that flies just this side of Cuban airspace. Forget that it’s our government spending our tax dollars to pay ethically challenged reporters to broadcast bullshit to Cuba. Forget for a minute that there’s supposedly some nebulous “difference” between Spanish journalism and Anglo journalism. Forget the questionable excuse of “The dead guy said it was alright.” The fact is that the Herald caved to local vocal Cuban pressure because of — money. Subscription money, advertising money, all kinds of money. What price ethics, eh?
Jésus Díaz was right to fire those reporters, regardless of their language and regardless of whatever carte blanche they’d supposedly been given by some dead editor. What they did as reporters was ethically wrong, and the fact that they did not recognize it only means they are not equipped to be reporters for a Pulitzer Prize–winning newspaper, crappy as it sometimes is. We should be able to expect a higher standard than that for our 50-cent-a-day subscription.
By the way, Castro sucks! Ka-ching!
