Rightwing Bush-worhipping media types like Laura Ingraham have scolded us for focusing on the negatives about the war in Iraq and not concentrating on the good things being accomplished there.
After an insurgent attack killed two members of a CBS crew and wounded a reporter last week, one blogger wrote: “It’s hard to cover the good news when you’re dead.” I think this was the perfect take on the Republicans talking point about the president’s domestic spying program, “What good are civil liberties if you’re dead.” (Which itself is an Orwellian twisting of Patrick Henry’s quote during the Revolutionary War, “Give me liberty or give me death.”)
The war in Iraq has become what I, for one, feared it would. We have opened a Pandora’s box in the Middle East and unleashed a pandemic of nasties that will plague us for decades to come. Just one example: Our presence there is spawning new young terrorists by the minute.
No more coddling the rightwing. They have fucked up the world big time, as Dear Leader’s puppetmaster might say. And it is getting worse by the hour:
- Haditha: American troops entered homes on Nov. 19 and shot dead 15 members of two families, including a 3-year-old girl, after a roadside bomb killed a U.S. Marine.
- U.S. forces shoot pregnant woman:U.S. forces killed two Iraqi women — one of them about to give birth — when the troops shot at a car that failed to stop at an observation post in a city north of Baghdad, Iraqi officials and relatives said Wednesday.
- Basra backfires on British:The British occupation of the southern areas around Basra has been relatively peaceful over the years. But now the insurgency is erupting there and a planned pull out by the British may be put on hold.
- Pre-election draw down looks unlikely:Conventional wisdom has had it that President Bush would announce major troop reductions in Iraq in order to help congressional Republicans in the elections this fall. Events on the ground in Iraq appear to be dictating otherwise. The Pentagon announced on Tuesday that 1,500 additional combat troops have been sent into the country.
The time has come to support the troops by pulling them out — and then we must deal with the team of incompetents who pushed the world closer to the brink of destruction.

I agree totally with your article. It is time to pull out and let Bush declare Victory before another American life is lost and our reputation is further ruined. Keep up the good work.
I definitely agree that the situation is Iraq is as hellish as ever, if not the worst it has been. But I still think we will hurt the Iraqis more by pulling out. Staying may be a horrible option both for our troops and for Iraq, but I’m convinced, barely, that it would be more horrible, at least for Iraq in the short term and America in the long term, to leave now.
One Liberal’s Argument for Still Staying in Iraq
What we need, Jon, is to tie this war to Bush and his Republican Guard every day in every way. Every democratic talking head should be hammering “Bush’s War”, and in every interview, every letter, every talk show appearance, every radio interview, and every public utterance should stress that, Bush and his Republican Guard are now and have been IN CHARGE for the last 5-years.
Iraq? “Well, as you know Bush and his Republican Guard are in charge.”
Economy? ” ” ”
Security? ” ” ”
Gas prices? ” ” ”
Health Care? ” ”
Immigration? ” ”
“Why do you keep saying ‘Bush and his Republican Guard?'”
“Because they are in charge they block every bill favorable to the people, give tax cuts to millionaires, run up obscene deficits for our children to pay, and, MOST IMPORTANTLY they act as a “guard” to provide cover to the administration NO MATTER HOW ILLEGAL the president’s actions may be. Hence, they differ not at all from Saddam’s Republican Guard, so we shall hereafter refer to the GOP as Bush’s Republican Guard. All we Democrats want is what this party has stood for for generations: equal rights, a social safety net, caring for the young, the elderly, the infirm, and the concerns of all our people, including the least amongst us as most religions dictate within their principles.”
The GOP wins by repeating lies so often and in so many different situations that eventually the “sheepeople” Republicans pander to come to accept the lies as truth.
We, therefore, need to hammer the TRUTH at every opportunity and so often that the truth begins to supplant the lies. THAT will finally put the “lie” to the Republican party, discredit them even more than they have discredited themselves lately, and America can start waking up to days that celebrate America’s legacy to the world and show that the lies that Bush and his Republican Guard continue to propagate DO NOT represent America and its Constitution.
Now that things are going bad, and much as Americans would like to avoid responsibility, the reality is that the majority of Americans elected Bush, and his administration not once by twice.
This is just as much a grand error of judgment of the Amnerican people as it is of Bush.
John is right–Iraq and other crimes of the Bush gangsters are ultimately the responsibility of the American people who elected him. Bush the idiot, Bush the Bungler, Bush the Butcher, no matter the title of this sorry episode in history is the responsibility of Americans–Americans the idiots, Americans the butchers, Americans the bunglers, Americans the war criminals. Don’t blame Bush, look in the mirror.
you guys are fags
So often I wonder what this generation would have been writing about during WWII. The hand wringing and senseless whining on a daily schedule is enough to make me puke.
I am constantly asking myself, “Self, where did John Wayne go?” Why is this great land littered with such cheese eating cowards, that had they been in number in the 40’s, would have us speaking German at best, or worst…. become a pile of lampshades?
Will someone listen? We were attacked on 9/11/01. Our involvement in the Middle East now is a day late and a dollar short. We are there now because this is where the enemy is.
The yahoo author of the lead article here, Jon Ponder, says the right-wing has fucked up the world bigtime. Retaliating for the most horendous act on earth is fucking the world up? You are one weak punk.
I know all you Birkenstock wearing, Volvo driving, bean sprout sandwich
eating liberal cowards will cry,
“But Iraq never attacked us on 9/11.”
That is why we are not at war with Iraq. You pencil spine, lilly livered, sissy fagggots. We liberated Iraq and now the enemy has come to Iraq.
The enemy is radical Islam. This percentage of Camel riding Hiltlers that would have the whole world see things their way. Does that sound familiar ? Or are you to fuckin’ cowardly to see beyond your hiding place?
If you wont be man enough to stand up for freedom and protect this great land from future 9/11’s at least just shut your mouth and let the real men do what you’re clearly not man enough to do. Lay there and lick the tit of whomever you lay down with, and watch men that still have balls handle the Hitler’s in a headscarf.
Comparing this fake war that aristocrat Bush bungled us into to World War II besmirches the patriotism of everyone who served back then.
You should be ashamed. Why do you Bush-worshippers hate America??
