Why my sister and I were baptised in two different churches is a long story but she recently decided to return to her Catholic roots. She’s been going to whatever classes they make you take so she will be able to receive communion and confess her sins and all that other stuff Catholics do.
A main focus of every class is abortion. My sister said the instructors (nuns) get on it and stay on it, week in and week out. This bothers her because she is pro-choice, and as a hospice professional, also believes in a person’s right not to have to go through what Terri Schiavo did.
Catholics are one-trick ponies when it comes to abortion. I don’t mean to offend but there is simply no dissention in the church about this. There are no degrees or shades when looking at this issue.
Whatever else you can say about Alito, he will be Catholic No. 5 on the Supreme Court bench, along with Scalia, Kennedy, Thomas, and Chief Justice Roberts. I don’t see how this can be a good thing for women.
Well, yes, but there’s actually lots of dissension (check out Canada’s ‘Catholic New Times’ for example…pure heresy in many eyes).
Catholics aren’t all ‘catholic’ (universal) anymore; I’m anti-abortion but pro-choice. How can I be this way? Simple…I believe in the inherent right of a woman to decide what’s best for herself yet instead of denying abortion as a choice I’d rather see the church promote wider contraceptive choices, the morning after pill and serious and mature sex and reproductive education from an early age. By doing this perhaps abortion can be made ‘obsolete’ as opposed to forcing others into a no-win solution where they don’t have the choice. Hardcore catholics, fundies and any other dictatorial religion have to wake up and smell the coffee: abortion is here to stay, but that doesn’t mean they can’t work hard and help to minimize it as a choice in favour of other less traumatic options. Politicians of all stripes should be ashamed for not trying harder to find a middle ground on this; instead they just continue to inflame the debate in order to maintain their core support.
