Tennesseans’ Views on Gay Marriage Shifting

Of Tennesseans support gay marriage or civil unions while 46% are opposed to both, according to a new Vanderbilt University poll in Tennessee. The results suggest a marked shift in Tennesseans’ views since 2006, when 81% of voters approved an amendment to the state constitution defining marriage between one man and one woman as “the only legally recognized marital contract” in the state.

Iowa Lawmakers Seek to Punish Judges for Gay Marriage Ruling

If the justices are going to behave like legislators, they ought to receive lawmakers’ pay.

— Iowa state Rep. Larry Sheets (R), member of the group of Iowa Republican lawmakers that has attached an amendment to a judicial branch budget bill that would reduce the salaries of the four remaining justices who were part of the groundbreaking case to legalize same-sex marriage in the state, the Sioux City Journal reports. Their salaries would be reduced from about $163,000 annually to $25,000, the amount legislators are paid.</h2>

More Than Half of American Voters Support Gay Marriage

Of voters support gay marriage, “up from 49% last March and 30% in 2004,” according to a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll. For the first time, pollsters said, the survey found a majority of independent voters say gays should be allowed to enter into same-sex marriages, with Democrats continuing to support gay marriage in large numbers and Republicans opposing it.

Gay Republicans Defy Logic to Condemn Obama’s Gay Marriage Conversion

“That the president has chosen today, when LGBT Americans are mourning the passage of Amendment One, to finally speak up for marriage equality is offensive and callous,” said Log Cabin Republicans president R. Clarke Cooper in a statement. “Log Cabin Republicans appreciate that President Obama has finally come in line with leaders like Vice President Dick Cheney on this issue, but LGBT Americans are right to be angry that this calculated announcement comes too late to be of any use to the people of North Carolina, or any of the other states that have addressed this issue on his watch.”

“This administration has manipulated LGBT families for political gain as much as anybody, and after his campaign’s ridiculous contortions to deny support for marriage equality this week he does not deserve praise for an announcement that comes a day late and a dollar short.”

Hold on there R., that amendment passed in N.C. by more than a 60 percent margin. Do you really believe that if President Obama had endorsed gay marriage a day sooner and a dollar more it would have changed the minds of any of those benighted Tarheels? Really?
