In Case You Missed It

Today’s Shocker from Borowitz:

In a stunning development that has confounded medical experts around the world, doctors examining Vice President Dick Cheney said today that they have detected signs of a heart…

“We had been operating under the assumption that he didn’t have one,” said chief of staff David Addington, who said that Mr. Cheney also has not had a soul since 1995, when it was purchased by the Halliburton Company…

At the White House, spokesperson Dana Perino said that the sudden appearance of a heart in Dick Cheney’s chest had motivated President Bush to schedule an MRI of his head.

Thompson: ‘Gun Show is a Day in Paradise’

CNN:

White House hopeful Fred Thompson called his trip down aisle of rifles, shotguns and pistols at a gun show “a day in paradise,” and said he wished he could come back to spend more time and money.

It was the former Tennessee senator and “Law and Order” actor’s second trip to a gun show since launching his late bid for the GOP nomination in September…

“It’s a beautiful day in paradise,” Thompson said when greeted by one of the people packing the show’s aisles.

This Thanksgiving, Bush Just Phoned It In

Bush takes a few — and we do mean few — minutes on Thanksgiving for the troops

In 2003, with his re-election campaign going into high gear, Bush hopped a plane and spent a little over two hours at the Baghdad Airport pretending to celebrate Thanksgiving with the troops.

That was the last time he made any show that the troops even cross his mind during the holidays or any other time. After all, he hasn’t run for anything since.

But his lackluster performance this year is still a surprise. Bush phoned a dozen service members from his Camp David retreat yesterday to tell them:

  • He’s proud of them
  • He’s impressed by their courage and compassion
  • He asks for God’s blessing upon them
  • Jeb, Neil, and Condi are waitin’ on him to watch the game, gotta go!

Bush did get one thing right. He said calling the troops was “the least I can do.”

Leaders of Bush’s Church Call for Iraq Withdrawal

Two years ago, the leaders of the United Methodist Church, of which George Bush claims to be a member, called for a timeline to withdraw from Iraq. Now — unlike Congress — they’re upping the ante.

Maybe Bush should join a church whose principles he actually shares. You know, like the Church of Cynical Greed?

Bishops of the United Methodist Church…elected an Iowa bishop to lead them and called on the United States and its allies to begin an immediate withdrawal from Iraq.

Iowa Bishop Gregory Vaughn Palmer, 53, was elected to lead the worldwide Council of Bishops of the 11 million-member church, the nation’s second largest Protestant denomination…

The resolution calling for an immediate troop withdrawal from Iraq also urges no permanent military bases in Iraq, increased support for military veterans and support for a reconstruction plan.

This isn’t the first time Bush has been called to account by his brethren. As early as 2003, just after the triumphant “end of major combat operations in Iraq,” Methodists expressed their displeasure with the current occupant. A group of 120 of their leaders signed a document entitled “A Prophetic Epistle from United Methodists Calling Our Brother George W. Bush to Repent.”

Maybe Bush should join a church whose principles he actually shares. You know, like the Church of Cynical Greed?

Hooded Protestors Take Stage at Gonzales Lecture

Photo from the Independent Florida Alligator

It’s not going that well for disgraced former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales out on the lecture circuit. Although he collected a hefty $40,000 fee for his recent appearance at the University of Florida, students made sure Gonzo earned every penny.

Early in his speech, two people climbed on the stage in hoods. Gonzales stopped talking for a few minutes as police led them away without incident, though there were several outbursts from the crowd.

The hooded demonstrators were charged with interruption of a public event, said Steve Orlando, a university spokesman. Several other people were ejected for yelling, and more than a dozen people stood for most of Gonzales’ hour-long speech with their backs toward him.

The actions by the protesters are even more commendable when you realize that this was the first political lecture on campus since John Kerry’s questioner pleaded, “Don’t tase me, bro,” in September. Go Gators!

Hate Crime Murder Victim Ryan Skipper’s Parents Are Asking Questions

The parents of Ryan Skipper, a Central Florida man stabbed to death and dumped on the side of the road earlier this year because he was gay, have a question for the Republicans running for president. Will you take responsibility for the hate and savagery your party has used to manipulate its base into condemning and attacking gays? Will you stop twisting religious tenets into a battle cry? Do you understand your rhetoric fuels ignorance and fear and violence? Do you realize there is blood on your hands?

Ryan’s mom and stepdad recorded this video for the town hall meetings where candidates answer questions from the public. Knowing how Republicans operate, this might be the most light of day this submission ever sees. Pass it along to your friends and to anyone who says homophobia is no big deal.

McCain Stuffs His Turkey of a Campaign with Iraq Thanksgiving Photo Op

John McCain is taking his presidential campaign to Iraq for Thanksgiving. The move can’t help but provoke memories of the 2003 visit from that other turkey, the one McCain has been apologizing and carrying water for since he ran against him in 2000.

Bush, if you recall, touched down at a makeshift military base at Baghdad International Airport for two-and-a-half hours, just long enough for photos and footage of him giving (but unfortunately not getting) the bird, and a quick recitation of his old chestnut about staying the course.

The visit lifted Bush’s ratings a little, and no doubt McCain is hoping for the same effect. He will be joined by fellow Bush champions Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) and Sen. Lindsey Graham, (R-S.C.).

This is McCain’s first visit to Iraq since his 4th of July trip earlier this year. Yes, the 4th of July. No doubt the timing was a complete coincidence that time too.

Another Word for “Free Rice”

Here’s a nifty little time-waster that actually isn’t (a waste of time). FreeRice.com donates grains of rice through the United Nations World Food Program to hungry people all over the world. But it only makes these donations if you play a multiple-choice vocabulary game first. The more words you get right, the more rice is donated. And the harder the words get.

Why, you might ask, don’t they just donate the rice without you playing the game? Because while you’re playing, ads are being displayed at the bottom of the page. Your clicks determine the rice donation. Check it out yourself. You’ll be helping the hungry and building your vocabulary at the same time.
