Dems’ California Firewall Expands – Brown, Boxer Both Up by 9 Points in CNN Poll

The new CNN poll finds leads for Democrats in the California races for governor and senator.

In the governor’s race, Democrat Jerry Brown, the state’s attorney general and former governor, leads billionaire former eBay executive Meg Whitman, 52 percent to 43 percent among likely voters. Brown has a 13 point advantage among registered voters, 52 percent to 39 percent.

Sen. Barbara Boxer, seeking a fourth term, leads former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina, by the same ratio, 52 percent to 43 percent. Among registered voters, Boxer’s lead widens to 19 points, 56 percent to 37 percent.

This is the first poll in which either candidate for governor has been above 50 percent in recent weeks. It is Boxer’s second 50-plus percent result.

The CNN poll is also the fourth consecutive poll that shows the Democrats ahead in California.

  1. And I don’t suppose the revelation that Whitman employed an undocumented immigrant in her household will help her at the polls. I also read that Whitman is attempting to mislead California’s Hispanic voters by airing “friendly” ads in areas where they live while saying that she approves of AZ SB 1070. I’ve never understood why some rw politicians think that people of color, gays, lesbians, atheists, Muslims, etc, are not intelligent enough to see through their hypocrisy. We know what they’re up to before the charade begins. It’s not we who are out of touch with reality, it’s them for thinking that they can say/do anything about/to us and get away unscathed. How difficult do they think it is for us to see their disdain for us when their every word/action is intended to hurt us in some way?

    1. The odd thing is, Whitman could have easily made this situation go away. She could have used her influence to get Nicky citizenship and helped her find work elsewhere — done something that showed compassion for someone who’d been a part of the household for nine years. Instead, she tried to make a political problem disappear and it came back to bite her.

The undocumented domestic is not a new problem for wealthy Republicans who try to buy political office in California. The last one who did it was Michael Huffington, who ran against Sen. Feinstein while he was still married to Arianna. They had an undocumented woman working as a nanny at their mansion. I wouldn’t say it caused him to lose, but he did lose and that was part of it.

What Whitman can count on now is very low turnout among Latinos in California. However, the GOP is (KNOCK WOOD) faring badly at the moment and if this keeps up, I suspect GOP turnout will be low — meanwhile the initiative to legalize pot could well energize the youth vote, which would help Democratic candidates.
