Florida Republicans Now Forced to Play Nice with Rick Scott
Rick Scott, who looks like he could host “Tales from the Crypt,” beat Bill “Howdy Doody” McCollum to become the Republican nominee for governor of Florida on Tuesday. That places the Republican Party of Florida in the uncomfortable position of having to support a guy with more money than scruples who trounced their chosen candidate McCollum, the state’s attorney general, and who just last Sunday they were savaging in the final days of the primary run-up.
Through clenched teeth, RPOF Chairman John Thasher issued this restrained congratulatory press release today:
Republican Party of Florida Chairman John Thrasher today congratulated Rick Scott for his victory in the Republican gubernatorial primary election.
“The stakes are high and I look forward to the debate ahead as we contrast Alex Sink’s record of support for President Obama’s ultra liberal, left-wing ideology in the form of donations to his campaign, endorsements of his government takeover of our health care system and support for his failed stimulus package, with Rick Scott’s vision for Florida that will create 700,000 new jobs without expanding the size and scope government.
I’m confident that Republicans across the state will rally around our new nominee as we move forward together towards the November election.
Pretty resounding, eh? Contrast that with this message sent directly from Thrasher Sunday, Aug. 22, when McCollum still had a slim possibility of winning:

Over the last several weeks and in an escalated manner this weekend, Rick Scott has orchestrated a multifaceted campaign of misinformation in an effort to mislead Florida voters and confuse the facts surrounding the arrest and indictment of Jim Greer as well as the Party’s financial situation and preparedness to support our candidates as we move towards the November election.
The ads placed in newspapers this weekend, television advertisements and the stream of mail sent to voters by Mr. Scott alleging that Attorney General Bill McCollum acted inappropriately throughout the investigation, arrest and indictment of Jim Greer are untrue. Politifact has twice written that Mr. Scott’s attacks on this issue are false and that their continued use appears to be an attempt at diverting attention from Mr. Scott’s past legal issues.
Wait? Alec Baldwin’s Half-Wit, Right-Wing Brother Steven Baldwin Wrote a Book on Impeaching Obama?
Actually, the author is Steven Baldwin, a “senior research fellow” at the Western Journalism Center, which, despite the highfalutin name, is apparently just a blog site for the right-wing conspiracy propaganda outlet, World Nut Daily. (They’re big promoters of Birtherism and are still flogging the often-disproved allegation that Hillary Clinton murdered Vince Foster in the early 1990s.)
So, just to be clear, it’s Steven Baldwin, a World Nut Daily salaried blogger, who is the author of “The Case for Impeachment: Why Barack Hussein Obama Should be Impeached to Save America.” Here’s a bit of the blurb a review, written by another WND blogger:
AZ Sen: McCain, 74, Reads Primary Win Acceptance Speech from Teleprompters
Sen. John McCain, who will be 74 years old on Sunday, acknowledged winning the Arizona Republican Senate primary yesterday by reading prepared remarks from a teleprompter. McCain spent $20 million to defeat J.D. Hayworth, a disgraced Republican congressman, TV pitchman and local right-wing radio talk show host.
In order to win nomination for a fifth term in the Senate, McCain had to run to the right of Hayworth, whose main appeal was among tea baggers. McCain won with a margin of 25 percent, but in doing so he trashed his former pose as a principled politician by flip-flopping on immigration, campaign reform and other issues.
In a telling moment, McCain’s desperation to win at all costs even drove him to deny that he’d ever been a “maverick,” despite the fact that the term had been used by his presidential campaign as a theme at rallies and in television ads and that he’d applied the term to himself in multiple quotes that were easily found on the Internet.
McCain faces Democrat Rodney Glassman, a former Republican, whose campaign drove itself into a ditch last Friday, Aug. 20, when three of his top aides abruptly quit. Confidential sources say the resignations were a response to Glassman’s “berating staffers and volunteers in public, even yelling at them” and because of a homophobic remark he made about an openly gay Tucson city councilmember that the councilmember has confirmed.
Ironically, in a vote among staffers on Capitol Hill, John McCain was once named the second most bad-tempered elected official, behind the late Sen. Ted Stephens (R-Alaska). McCain also spouts anti-gay rhetoric, despite the fact that his wife and daughter have come out in favor of gay civil rights.
