BTW Jon, To answer your question regarding Southern Industrialization- the South was “behind” the North, but not by a century. If not for the war, Railroads would have been completed by the late 1860s, the iron industry was getting underway, etc.
What was it not until the 20th century that they really came into industrialization?
Perhaps the war, 12 years of reconstruction and another 100 years of Republican Party labor protectionism had something to do with that? I know it upsets your worldview, but………………..
Good grief, Carl, you are really invested in this. I’m not going to re-litigate federalism with you. That was done to death by the planters and their lackeys in Congress during the run-up to the war. They insisted they had sovereignty. The northerners disagreed. The South forced the North into a war. The North won, and the litigation was settled. Secession was determined to be illegal.
That said, at this point, I’m pretty sure if the South wanted to secede again, the rest of the country would help them pack.
As to the secession itself, who fired the first shot? Whoever that was started the war.
I will say this about North Carolina, since that’s where I’m from — North Carolina had very few slaves, because the rivers were mostly unnavigable, so it was then a very poor state, the “Mississippi of the Confederacy,” as a historian somewhere has said. But we were also famously a “vale of humility between two mountains of conceit.” We went willingly but we had no choice. And yet, by most reckonings, more Tar Heel boys lost their lives than Confederate soldiers from any other state. What a waste.
Iron-making had been around a long time — centuries — before the Civil War, and, yes, armaments were manufactured in the war — there was a Confederate naval yard in Charlotte, which is 250 miles inland. But it wasn’t until the 20th century that cotton and tobacco mills were built close to the fields.
You have repeatedly called me a bigot, but that is demonstrably false. Bigots are ignorant. I have studied this history and these issues all my life. I am also proud of my Southern heritage, which goes much deeper and broader than the war in mid-1860s. I do believe Southerners’ fixation on that tragic war — especially the romanticizing of it — is, let’s just say, unhealthy.
But about the flag, the Southern Poverty Law Center has documented over 500 extremist groups across the country that use it as their symbol. These racist groups chose that flag to symbolize their hatred of African Americans and other minorities. Your beef is with them, not me. It’s not my opinion that the Confederate flag is a logo for racism in the 21st century. It is a fact, and it’s a waste of time to debate it.
I’ll say it again: If you’re not a racist, wise up about that flag. If you are a racist, keep defending it.

So, is this how issues are settled? By force? Might makes right? If that is the case, then presumably you and I could meet in a parking lot and whoever kicks the other one’s backside is “right” in this debate. Is that what you’re saying? That the principle disappears when a physical victor is declared? So, since the colonists asserted the same right and defeated the British, from 1776 until 1865 self-government was correct. But, that principal was reversed in 1865 with the South’s defeat? Your logic escapes me.

The south. What’s your point. They had offered to buy the federal forts. Lincoln refused. He (admittedly) attemppted to resupply Ft. Sumter knowing that the South would see it as an act of war. Yes, the South fired the first shot……..at a foreign invader who was on Southern soil in a military posture and resupplying a military fortress occupied by the same foreign invader. Using your logic, if today peaceful negotiations between the united States and England happened to break down, and the united States ordered them to abandon their Embassy in the united States, and rather than doing so, they sent military supplies to the embassy, and the united States answered with military action……..who would have comitted the first hostile act?
The point I’m making with regards to industrialization is this: 1) I claim it should be by economic choice, and you claim the North was right to conquer the South in order that we may have it. 2) The south was behind in industrialization, but not 100 years. Until the war that is. Far from “bringing us industrialization” what they did was destroy the infrastructure, demolish numerous towns, kill approximately 1 out of every 4 males between the ages of 18 and 50, destroy our economy, render the South a wasteland, steel our land, tax us into oblivion and institute military occupation and domination for 12 years. Bigotry has nothing to do with how well read you are (which, I don’t know where you’ve been getting your history, but frankly it sounds a LOT like the average neo-conservative, republican viewpoint. Maybe you’re the one getting it from Fox News.)

The American Flag was desecrated just recently and Police Officers just stood there and allowed it to happen. Police officers threaten to lock up anyone that interfered! Thank you for the kind words. Defending the South is my duty, and yes, as Jon said, I do have a lot invested in this. My blood is invested.
Back at the turn of the 20th century a reconstructed Southerner encountered the Southern historian, Mildred Lewis Rutherford. He told her that “My Father fought for the Confederacy, but I believe if he were alive today he’d have regretted serving on the wrong side.”
Mrs. Rutherford replied to him that “far more likely, he’d regret having a son so disloyal to the principals for which he was willing to give his life.”
It is a shame the amount of indoctrination, and outright falsehoods that have been swallowed up by the Southern people.
Southern history is American history. There is no part of it that deserves scorn or ridicule. It is history, and it is Heritage. People like Jon are so wrapped up in their own narrow, tenuous beliefs that they simply cannot see the hypocrisy of their views.
I guarantee you that if I started an initiative to go out an publicly burn an African flag, Jon and his ilk would be all over me about it. I would never do such a thing. More and more I see history repeating itself, as unreasonable and unsustainable Federal Governmnent mandates rain down on the States. I predict secession by not only former Confederate States, but northern and western States as well. President Jefferson Davis stated that The Cause for which we fought would re-surface one day.
