Santorum Lied When He Claimed He Was Critical of Bush’s War

Santorum’s office couldn’t find public statements of the senator questioning the Iraq war, despite the senator’s claim last week that he has publicly expressed his concerns. But Santorum said that doesn’t mean he hasn’t made the comments.

Karl Rove need no longer pore over polls to find out which way the wind is blowing in public opinion about the war in Iraq. He need only take a gander at the rats deserting the sinking ship. Case in point, Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Bestiality) – a primo GOoper tool if there ever was one – has been caught jumping overboard so fast it has made his own head spin.

Santorum is facing opposition in his bid for re-election next year from Democratic state treasurer Robert Casey Jr. When Casey criticized Santorum for not asking tougher questions about President Bush’s reasons for taking the country to war, a very surprising thing happened.

Instead of bloviating the latest talking points about the war fed to him by his betters, Santorum capitulated – and in capitulating, he lied:

Yesterday, Santorum disputed Casey’s characterization, saying he had raised concerns about military and diplomatic progress in Iraq with administration officials, spoken publicly about intelligence failings that preceded the 9/11 attacks, and bucked the President in pushing for measures that crack down on Syria and Iran, which have been blamed for aiding insurgents […]

“I have a very clear track record of being supportive of the policy, but not necessarily all of the tactics,” the two-term senator said. “That shows a level of involvement and sophistication that my opponent has not grasped… . I still have concerns about our level of activity with respect to fighting the insurgency, and the number of former Baathists who are put in positions of power in the country and their relationships with Iran. I have expressed those concerns publicly and privately.”

Oh really? Well, a quick check of Lexis-Nexus comes up with nada-zip-zero, according to Roll Call – and the senator himself:

Santorum’s office acknowledged yesterday that it cannot locate public statements of the senator questioning the Iraq war, despite the senator’s claim last week that he has publicly expressed his concerns.

But Santorum said that doesn’t mean he hasn’t made the comments.

Just because he makes a comment in the forest, when no one’s around, doesn’t mean he didn’t make the comment.

O, Corruption, thy name is Conservative!

  1. Interesting that Frist kills the embryos, Lott says the war thingie is not going well, Santorum makes up some gibberish about private comments. They are sounding like, dare I say, moderates? A little Madonna-style reinvention? Do they think it will work?
