Breaking: Marine Commandant Says Iraq Is Putting Corps Is At Risk

ABC News is reporting that the new commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen. James Conway, says that the strain on resources caused by the war in Iraq is jeopardizing the Marines’ worldwide mission.

“There is stress on the individual Marine, and there is stress on the institution,” Conway told reporters today.

Conway expressed concern that the Marines could be hampered from successfully deploying if a significant new crisis were to erupt.

Hersh: Cheney Lying About Iran Nukes

History repeats itself. Vice President Dick Cheney is trying to bury a classified draft assessment by the CIA that shows Iran, like Iraq before it, might be telling the truth about it nuclear weapons program. Be sure to pick up the Nov. 27 issue of the New Yorker, with the full article by Seymour Hersh.

The C.I.A. assessment warned the White House that it would be a mistake to conclude that the failure to find a secret nuclear-weapons program in Iran merely meant that the Iranians had done a good job of hiding it.

The C.I.A. found no conclusive evidence, as yet, of a secret Iranian nuclear-weapons program running parallel to the civilian operations that Iran has declared to the International Atomic Energy Agency….

But Cheney and the Bush administration aren’t going to let little details like the truth stop them from pursuing their goals, whatever the hell they are.

Cheney and his aides discounted the assessment, the former senior intelligence official said. “They’re not looking for a smoking gun,” the official added, referring to specific intelligence about Iranian nuclear planning. “They’re looking for the degree of comfort level they think they need to accomplish the mission.” […]

Wonder If Her Phone Has Paris’ Number in It

Brian Ross:

First Daughter Barbara Bush had her purse and cell phone stolen as she had dinner in a restaurant in Buenos Aires, Argentina, even though she was being guarded by a detail of Secret Service agents…

The purse snatching took place on Barbara’s first night in town while she was dining in the picturesque San Telmo neighborhood. According to the reports, the Secret Service agents failed to notice the incident.

The Secret Service would not comment on the purse snatching, and the First Lady’s office said they would not comment on any personal trip made by the daughters. There have been recent reports, however, that Jenna Bush has been living and working in Panama as an intern for UNICEF.

Murdoch Apologizes, Pulls Idiotic O.J. Project

Score one for the good guys.

The chairman of News Corporation issued a statement today announcing that it will not broadcast an interview with O.J. Simpson or publish the book he wrote about the murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend, Ronald Goldman.

“I and senior management agree that this was an ill-considered project,” News Corporation chairman Rupert Murdoch said in a statement released today. “We are sorry for any pain that it has caused the Goldman and Brown families.”

In an announcement on Fox News, an anchor said that the decision to cancel the TV special to air the interview and to shelve the book was prompted by viewer outrage.

News Corporation owns ReganBooks, which was to publish Simpson’s book.

Bush Eliminates Hunger. The Word, That Is

The Bush administration has eliminated hunger in America, and it was much easier than anyone suspected. They have simply quit using the word.

Yes, the folks who brought you “faith-based initiatives” instead of “lack of separation of church and state,” and “healthy forests” instead of “clear-cutting” are proud to present, “very low food security” instead of “hunger.”

Eliminating hunger was much easier than anyone suspected

…in Chicago, at the Holy Family Food Pantry, the people lining up for assistance know exactly what hunger means.

“I’m running out of food, so I got to find somewhere to get some food,” Terry Sutton said.

But according to the new government report, that doesn’t necessarily make him hungry.

Sutton and others like him have “very low food security.”

“When they hear ‘very low food security’ it sounds like bureaucratic jargon. It doesn’t sound like people who can’t get enough to eat,” said Deborah Leff of the Public Welfare Foundation.

Some say that may be just the point.

We can expect Rush Limbaugh to chime in any time with a screed about fat poor people and how they’re all just faking it.

Meanwhile, groups like USA Harvest pick up the Bush administration’s slack by fighting hunger all over this country and Canada, including Houston, where, over one year later, many of the people displaced by Hurricane Katrina still live. A study conducted in September showed them not doing very well.

While about 60 percent of the evacuees surveyed had been employed in New Orleans before Katrina, a little more than 60 percent are now unemployed. Almost 74 percent have an annual income of less than $15,000, and almost 17 percent have an income of between $15,000 and $25,000.

Guess we ought to do something about that. Maybe we should call them “geographically shifted people of newfound leisure” instead.

Bad Week for Mark Foley: Dad Dies, Criminal Probe Announced

Paging Mark Foley. At last Jon has an answer to his question. He’s been wondering about the whereabouts of the missing former Florida Congressman, who checked into rehab and hasn’t been heard from since.

Turns out his dad died of cancer on Tuesday and Mark did show up for the funeral.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has opened an investigation into whether former U.S. Rep. Mark Foley broke any criminal laws with sexually explicit computer messages he sent to former male teenage pages

Edward J. Foley Jr., a former teacher and high school principal and father of former U.S. Rep. Mark Foley, died Tuesday.

Mr. Foley, of Ocean Ridge, had been ill with cancer since 2003. His daughter, Donna Foley Winterson, notified The Palm Beach Post of her father’s death.

…A proud Irish-American who loved to tell stories, preside over family gatherings and play golf, Mr. Foley believed in his family, his church and his community.

Mr. Foley, a native of Newton, Mass., moved to Florida in 1958 after living briefly in Arizona. He came here with his wife, Frances, whom he met in Catholic school. They were married 62 years.

But that wasn’t the only bad news for Mark this week.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has opened an investigation into whether former U.S. Rep. Mark Foley broke any criminal laws with sexually explicit computer messages he sent to former male teenage pages on Capitol Hill.

“It was a preliminary inquiry before, but we found the basis to open up a criminal investigation,” Kristen Perezluha, an FDLE spokeswoman, said Thursday. She did not elaborate. The FBI is also investigating Foley.

…Meanwhile, Foley has returned to Florida to attend his father’s funeral after spending more than a month in an Arizona rehabilitation facility for alcoholism, said his attorney, David Roth.

Wonder what the deal with Arizona is? His parents lived there and he went there for rehab. And let’s not forget John McCain.

Anyway, Mark’s been on a bit of a downward cycle lately. If you didn’t really mind people who can’t accept themselves and try to deny who they are and demonize others just like them, you’d almost feel sorry for him. Or not.

Marines Reject Preaching Jesus

On the first day of Christmas my true love sent to me a talking Jesus doll. Or not.

“We can’t take a chance on sending a talking Jesus doll to a Jewish family or a Muslim family.”

A talking Jesus doll has been turned down by the Marine Reserves’ Toys for Tots program.

A Los Angeles company offered to donate 4,000 of the 1-foot-tall dolls, which quote Bible verses, for distribution to needy children this holiday season…

Toys are donated to kids based on financial need and “we don’t know anything about their background, their religious affiliations,” said Bill Grein, vice president of Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, in Quantico, Virginia.

As a government entity, Marines “don’t profess one religion over another,” Grein said Tuesday. “We can’t take a chance on sending a talking Jesus doll to a Jewish family or a Muslim family.”

…According to the company’s Web site, the button-activated, bearded Jesus, dressed in hand-sewn cloth outfits and sandals, recites Scripture such as “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again”

Whoa! Forget that new PlayStation. Give me a talking Jesus for Christmas!
